Enduring Love Reviews

Mar 30, 2025

I picked this up by chance when it was released; i’m glad i did. Second movie i saw Craig in (first being ‘some voices’, closely followed by his support role in ‘the jacket’). Second movie i saw Ifans in (first being ‘kevin & Perry…’). Both male leads were brilliant. The score boosted the thriller aspects and helped me hone in on the despair, guilt and helplessness Craigs character was feeling post accident. I watched this movie blind and knew nothing about it whatsoever. This is an excellent British thriller and i recommend anyone who hasn’t seen it to do so.👍🏻

I really enjoyed this movie. Acting, story line, interesting twists - all extremelly well done. Those giving a sub par rating should re-watch. I think you will change your mind.

Don't shy away from Enduring Love based on its precious title, thinking that it's a posh romance with swelling violins and romantic candlelit scenes. Based on Ian McEwan's brilliant novel, it is a story of obsession fueled by mental illness and the guilt that results from a tragic death. While picnicking in the English countryside, Joe (Daniel Craig) and Claire (Samantha Morton) witness a hot air balloon accident, a young boy trapped in the basket as the balloon begins to ascend. After the attempted rescue and a gruesome death, one of the rescuers, Jed (Rhys Ifans), develops an obsession with Joe, an imaginary relationship that shatters the lives of all three main characters. The three leads are fantastic, the direction (especially in the last half) is creative, and the suspense is palpable throughout as the relationship between the two men escalates from casual annoyance to horrifying confrontation as the story progresses.

The reviews are pretty evenly split on this film. Everyone agrees, of course, that the opening sequence is amazing. But many critics say that the film goes downhill from there. I disagree. Yes, it slows down somewhat in the middle, but the final outcome is pretty surprising. Of course, there is one gaping hole: Why doesn't Joe call the cops and report the stalker? But then, of course, the story requires that he doesn't. It's a formidable and challenging film, well worth a watch.

Some of Daniel Craig's outbursts were comedy gold, and the beginning was unexpected and entertaining, but that's about it. The boy should have climbed out of the balloon considering he had plenty of time, and the man hanging on should have at least attempted to climb. After the balloon incident, the narrative thinned out and became poorly paced. The main character was constantly smoking, drinking, and losing his mind, and and he didn't react appropriately to the stalker on multiple occasions. The characters weren't developed sufficiently, believable, or likeable, and the romance that faltered never really felt like it was there to begin with. The ending was also inevitable considering nothing was properly done about the lunatic. Then the weird 'was he having an affair?' subplot was unnecessary padding. With that said, the acting was solid, especially from Daniel Craig, the cinematography and visual effects were fine, the sets were interesting, and the soundtrack was memorable.

Doesn't really live up to the book, sad to say.

Overthinking things is bad bruh. Daniel Craig is excellent here in this psychological thriller.

A solid thriller with perhaps one of the most intense opening sequences in cinema.

Great story, great acting

The novel had it's issues but this is a bit of a mess to be honest. It all starts quite well with the excellently realised Baloon incident from the book being pretty well translated here (if a little brief). From thee it really struggles though, the central love relationship is never particularly well conveyed. Ifans stalker just doesn't make sense, he's not a fully fleshed out character so as a result just seems a bit pointless. Hopefully 'On Chesil Beach' slated for release later this year will do a better job like 'Atonement' managed.

Daniel Craig and Samantha Morton are wasted in this overtly stylized movie that never forms into anything of interest.

I'm s strange most people only liked the beginning of the film but I didn't feel to connected straight away but as the film progresses and the incident is brought up and as Daniel Craig tries to discover what jed wants and pursues questions I can't help but keep thinking of the beginning and if there are subtle things I might have missed. Fantastic absolutely brilliant.

Daniel Craig and Rhys Ifans give brilliant performances in this overwrought stalking story -- logic fails in that Daniel Craig's character never calls the police about the stalker which seems bizarre even in these times when we aren't sure that police really care about us -- they do by the way. The musical score is over the top and this doesn't help. Still I am glad I watched the film... Also glad I saw it at home.

Pretty interesting concept, but it wasn't as intense as I would have liked. It's a movie about stalking, which I thought was brought to life very well--the frustration, confusion, and anger that stems from it and in turn, the stress on relationships. The antagonist is very creepy and does a good job relaying stalker behavior. Craig plays a university professor with very isolating theories about love and life...that aspect is very built-in to the movie. It seemed disingenuous. The ending was rushed, and even though it tried to be dramatic, it was just wa-wa. It is English, and some people don't enjoy English film, but it wasn't that distracting. So, in all, an interesting study in stalking, but just an average movie. Almost impossible to find in the States. I would go to the end of the Earth to find it, but if it's on the tube, I'd check it out if you're into that kind of psychological suspense film. Don't miss the beginning if you do!

Preferred the book, but isn't that nearly always the way?

An odd and disturbing film that did not work for me. A superb beginning fades into a mess of hollow, drooling pseudo-characters. The ending is wanting, weak, and decidedly unsatisfying. Waste of a fine cast.

Fascinating psychological study of the different natures of love, with good acting by a good cast and great camera work. Definitely worth seeing.

The filmmakers' seemingly-unconscious homophobia is especially toxic, precisely because it is so built-in and unremarked upon. Proof positive that Daniel Craig is a dull, unimaginative, imprecise actor whose success has always baffled me. Between this and The Comfort Of Strangers, Ian McEwan--like Harold Pinter--has some big and ugly issues with (repressed or overt) male homosexuality; again, it's always a foregone conclusion that it is inherently perverse, inhuman and evil. Dunderheaded and despicable.

What a travesty. The worst book adaptation since Bonfire of the Vanities. Avoid at all costs
