Escobar: Paradise Lost Reviews

Jun 8, 2024

POINTLESS, ok movie but not good. The part I enjoyed the most was that everyone was walking past the beggar in front of the church door, that everyone ignored, by not giving him a cent. Basically a lot of killing, most of it innocent people who helped escobar, and that was his payment. Doesn't delve deeply enough on any point to make it interesting. Motto of the story, don't trust drug dealers. If you didn't learn that at an early age, now you know. NRJ.

A beautifully filmed and acted story that will thrill and chill you from start to finish--I promise.

I finally had the chance to see "(Escobar) Paradise Lost" and Wow, what a movie. Fantastic story and perfectly directed. Tense up to the very last second. As I had lived a year in Colombia owing a handicrafts/souvenir shop, starting just months after Pablo Escobar and other big bosses of the cartel had struck a deal with the government (not to be extradited to the US), I have personally seen the brutality of criminals and the whole society there. It was the most terrifying year of my life, including a man being shot right in front of my shop, with five bullets in the back, followed by another 5 right into his head. Afterwards the killer just smiled at me, being crouched in my store, and simply jump onto a motorbike with his companion. And this movie shows the truth and reality of all this scenery pretty down to the core. The movie is scarily real. 8/10 points

It kinda lingers for half the movie but the rest of it is very thrilling, especially the last half hour. Definitely worth the watch

Oddball title of the year! This movie can’t quite decide what it wants to be. But wow is Del Toro excellent. And Hutcherson holds his own, too, all things considered.

A film that keeps you focused and basically on the edge, but somehow makes you question the realism in the plot, though there's no doubt Escobar was ruthless. The acting and cinematography is all over very good, as are the authenticity of small part actors, extras and locations. But despite Benicio del Toro being a brilliant actor, he is not fully credible in portraying Pablo Escobar. He's probably to special to appear as many historical persons, much due to his eyes. Javier Peña in the series Narcos was absolutely perfect.

Very deep meaning. Exposes the reality of life in a third world country. I greatly enjoyed this movie. It’s definitely not a light watch.

good movie based on true story. I enjoy the scene until the end, it also had the thrill in some situation. i thought this movie was about Pablo become the main role, but turns out this film in the perspective of his niece's boyfriend

Benicio del Toro was great, but Josh Hutcherson is just weak.

A great performance by Guillermo del Toro saves the film from some faults.

When a young surfer (Josh Hutcherson) begins a relationship with the niece of drug kingpin Pablo Escobar (Benicio Del Toro), he finds his life on the line after being pulled into the dangerous world of the Escobar family business.

This movie is to Pablo Escobar what The Last King of Scotland was to Idi Amin: the tale of a legendary villain seen through the eyes of a random (and fictional) white dude. It's so unfortunate that filmmakers feel they have to invent white protagonists to make movies about other countries more relatable to a broad American audience. Escobar is a larger than life character and deserves a movie all to himself, but alas, he is reduced to a supporting role in this film It's so disappointing because Benecio del Toro as Pablo Escobar is so fucking awesome, I was very sad I didn't get more of it. The main character is a "Canadian surfer" (ugh, please!) that falls in love with Escobar's niece. And hijinks ensue. The majority of the film follows his desperate attempts to escape the clutches of the drug cartel, but the problem is that you never see the set up. You don't see how he is seduced by the charming villain and then slowly realize that maybe all is not what it seems. You only see him trying to get out, so you never really root for him, instead you just wonder how he could be so stupid to end up in that position in the first place. To make matters worse, the character is too bland and wholesome, which isn't helped by the fact that he is played by Josh Hutcherson, champion beta-boy of Hunger Games fame. Hutcherson gives it everything he's got, it's not enough to flesh out his thinly written character. As to the story itself, the director is too heavy-handed with the melodrama, the film needed a more delicate touch to be truly impactful. This movie has its moments as a suspense/thriller, it's entertaining enough to keep you interested, but it missed the mark from the get-go, all in its choice of main character. If you are interested in Escobar's story, watch the Netflix series "Narcos" instead.

Can Josh Hutcherson appear in a movie where no one wants to kill him for a reason? Come on, the hunger games are over!

"Escobar: Paradise Lost" is a great movie. Benicio Del Toro is Pablo Escobar. This is probably the best performance ever about Escobar´s real character. Actor Josh Hutcherson gives a great performance as Nick, and actress Claudia Traisac who plays Maria gives a great performance. Carlos Bardem plays Drago, with a short but impressive intervention on the plot. I highly recommend you this movie.

It took me awhile to get into this movie cuz I don't like Hutcherson but once I did, I was pretty hooked. Once the story gets past the romance it becomes pretty intense. Solid film.

This movie really didn't impress me much. Benicio Del Toro does as great job with his role, but the movie is so poorly put together that I found it tough to stay interested at times.
