Faithless Reviews
The greatest 02 hours: and 34 minutes featuring a Swedish cast of actors and crew!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Written by Ingmar Bergman and directed by Liv Ullmann, one can't help but think that Faithless is some sort of collective confessional, an exercise in chasing away demons that may have haunted them for years. Regardless, the movie tackles the subject of infidelity with surgical precision, told through the lens of an aging director (Erland Josephson) and the characters he has conjured to life, primarily the catalyst of the events, an actress named Marianne (Lena Endre). Thanks to some solid direction by Ullmann, a typically intelligent and insightful script from Bergman, and a remarkable performance from Endre, Faithless deals with the subject matter unlike any other film of its kind – alternately loving, brutal, and tragic.
Ullmann makes a Bergman movie, using his script, actors and his location. A triangular couple relation, including Bergman? himself. Naturally the whole spectre of emotions are blown in your face.
(** 1/2): The film is a bit overlong, and I ultimately felt unsatisfied with the end product. I really like the concept of the film (and the cast is good), but I just can't quite recommend it. A near-miss.
I've watched quite a few Bergman films and like his other films they can seem slow moving intricate affairs. however, if you have the 2 1/2 hours to sit through this, you'll be rewarded with a fine film experience. My suggestion is to watch the movie without knowing any of the backstory behind the film, then when finished, read about how/why this movie was created. Once you know the story behind the story, you'll see how this movie operates on a few different levels....
A" Bergman"film directed by his favorite actress Liv Ullmann , the script is by Bergman himself . During the building of a character for a film we follow a family tragedy after the failure of a marriage
I like "Unfaithful" more. It's more real than Faithless!
Script by Ingmar Bergman film directed by Liv Ullman. An Adult film about desire, regret, selfishness. Faithless opens on an island, Faro, where an old man (Erland Josephson), The old man is visited by a character he partly remembers & partly creates, Marianne (Lena Endre, who is tremendous in the very sort of complex role that Ullman used to play so brilliantly Marianne is an actress (is she real or a ghost or dream? Or perhaps she never existed, & the whole event is a fiction.). She's also the nurturing mother of 9-year-old Isabelle (Michelle Gylemo) & contented wife of a world-famous conductor named Markus (Thomas Hanzon). Within minutes, Marianne is telling the old man how her happy life came apart, & though he listens attentively, it appears that he's also anticipating the story she has to tell, as if he knows it all too well. (Is it his story?) One of the only requirements Bergman made of Ullman was that Lena Endra appear in this starring role. She has a great likeness of the younger Ullman. The film revisits Bergman's most well-rehearsed themes loss, guilt, & remorse. The screenplay is based on an incident of infidelity in Bergman's life half a century ago. Faithless runs 2 ½ hours; it is vintage Bergman in its preoccupation with the interior life. Ullman also the shot the film in the relentless close-ups, angry guilt ridden bursts of dialogue & in the long pauses which Bergman is known for. A good deal of the film consists of close-ups of Mariannes tear-stained face as the character deals with her guilt & sorrow over her infidelity, divorce, & the child custody battle. It is really dynamite film making. It is a very intimate film. All of Mariannes conversations with Bergman are done in his actual studio on Faro Island in Sweden. Ullmann (Marianne) is Bergmans former lover, with whom she has a daughter. The quotation at the start of the movie from Botho Strauss is so true & important summarized by me as divorce as a descent into hell & havoc. 5 stars

Liv Ullmann behind the camera exceeds my expectations by far. For starters, she proves that she's a good student to a great master, paying several tributes to Bergman throughout the film and, to my pleasure, crafting her own visual style, even while recognizing his influence on her vision. Bergman, in the fashion of a true artist who knows his worth, steps away from the camera and settles for the role of the script writer (a role he plays very well), allowing his muse and student to shine behind his favorite tool, without a hint of jealousy or competitiveness. I'm more humbled by this fact than I'm about the subject matter of the this film, which is open to a lot of debate.
Faithless was first shown in the competition at Cannes Film Festival in year 2000. A drama of infidelity, based on Bergman's own life during the autumn of 1949. Erland Josephson plays Bergman's alter ego.

I have not seen any of his movies till Faithless. I know it was directed by Liv Ulmann but written by Bergman. My friend told me, you will recognize Bergman's themes in almost all his movies. The movie showed an old man, representing Bergman, writing a new script for a movie. A lady accompanies him, telling him everything about her life, as a married woman, betraying her husband with his best friend and the consequences of her actions. The script seemed predictable, but was really surprising.I It was just something different for me but unbelievably good.
Emotionally challenging, depending how much experieces you have such as the characters, brilliantly portrayed by the cast. If you have seen many Berman films then you will see a similarity with his own work, but I would not take away the credit to Liv Ullmann who directed an imprssive memorable film.
Excelente!
