This is an incredible true story. I think the main character is one of my heroes. If you want it he'll be one of yours too.

We're on a documentary run in my film classes and its interesting the liking of good documentaries. This was another one where it shows the hardships of Rio and the jumpiness of the movie didn't hurt it. Just showed two sides of the picture tthat was stratifying. Great Documentary. 8/10

Favela Rising, winner of 35 international film awards, tells the story of how one 'favela' or 'clan' within the hillside slum villages of Brazil, instead of playing the CIA-funded drug and guns game, just stopped playing by the corporate rules. They set their favela free from omnipotent drug lords and commiting crime for drug money and indulging in random death for no real cause by investing their time and energy in their own brand of Affro Reggae musical inspiration. They found their soul and shared it with the human beings in neighbouring favelas. And this proves that that's how easy it is to EVOLVE mankind to a higher state. Forget the lure of profit. Forget the corporate dogma. Forget the hatred of others. You The People are more than wage slaves and deserve a better life on this FREE PLANET, and only seven billion people working together can bring about this change and nullify the insidious corporate influence in our once-free lives.

Amazing documentary.

A document about life in one of RIo's favela (slums). When grown up in favela you have limited options... Usually start working street as little thief or a dealer for a bigger drug lord. This document describes another, somhow more chllenging and difficult way. One of the guys instead of dealing drugs, starts an afroreggae group and expands his mission on other favelas as well...

really interesting. so sad and yet also really hopeful.

The documentary was a little dry, but the music was great. I admire the tenacity of Anderson and his efforts to improve the quality of life in the Favelas of Rio.

this story is inspirational! I might get the soundtrack to this too! it's about a black brazilian brotha who is tired of the violence in his favela and uses music to bring about change.

not at all what i expected and this docu is a great, inspirational capture of overcoming and coming out the better.

One of those great documentaries. It felt truthful, awful, powerful and yes, even hopeful. Inspiring!

Favela Rising is a great documentary that sheds light on the life of residents of the most notorious of Rio's favelas (slum, shanty) called Vigario Geral (aka the Brazilan Bosnia). It follows Anderson Sa through his and the group he heads (Afro Reggae) efforts to transform life and the image of favela living and its people. Drugs armies glamorized in the eyes of the male youth—many wanting to grow up to be a 'hood', corrupt military police who bread and feed the problems, massacres and constant despair. The film's was originally intended to be a piece that contrasts the heights of wealth and depths of poverty that neighbor each other in the beautiful Rio. That changed when the filmmakers met Anderson and witnessed the phenomena of "change from the inside". From rage came a rhythm, from music a movement and from the movement a revolution.

Good documentary on the life of one of the many neighborhoods of the Flavelas. Amazing story as well as a great soundtrack, and good performances!

Inspiring documentary about a group of people making a positive change in a Brazilian slum. It shows how people living in horrific surroundings can improve their lives.
