The Fog Reviews
Why in God's name someone would want to remake this perfect movie will forever remain a mystery to me. It was so bad on every level that it literally beggared the imagination. The original film and cast was clearly so superior that to even try and compare these two would be an exercise in futility. But even more insane is why the great John Carpenter who directed the original would even want to be a part of this massive pile of regurgitated garbage, making it an even larger mystery to me. Don't waste your time on this turkey, just watch the 1980 original and be happy.
Wow this one stinks! Cool sink scene though.
There's absolutely no reason for the hate on this film. It is a very decent remake and is totally entertaining if you like New England ghost stories. I enjoyed it.
ABSOULITY FANTASTIC REMAKE, The First One Was Good, But This One,Wins The PRIZE, Thank You.⭐⭐⭐⭐
Weak script lacking any depth, decent dialogue, and momentum but let's not lay all the blame on the writer(s); the producers and the director are due their fair share of blame for not exercising a modicum of critical facility.
While many people nowadays rail against remakes as a lazy cash grab with little to no artistic merit, many seem to forget that the mid-noughties were a particularly egregious time for this phenomenon, with a seemingly never-ending string of classic franchise getting an unnecessary reboot. And right on cue, we have The Fog, a remake of the 1980 John Carpenter film that, like all these pointless redoings, nobody was asking for, but we got anyway. The film is around 1 hour and 40 minutes, and I was bored to tears within the first half hour, so the rest was more of an endurance test than a viewing experience. The Fog is far from my favourite Carpenter film, but it still has his trademark eerie score, tense direction and escalating sense of foreboding. But because director Rupert Wainwright, who, as a sidenote, hasn't directed a film since, doesn't trust his audience to keep paying attention if something doesn't jump out of the screen every 5 minutes, the film is punctuated by musical stingers and irritating jumps scares. All the usual suspects of course: Doors banging, people popping out of nowhere in the dark, sudden screeches, explosions, light suddenly turning off etc. This wouldn't be so bad if the story was compelling and the characters were interesting, but neither of these things are true. It's a lifeless film, directed without an ounce of energy and subsequently dragging on for what feels like 3 hours. To top it all off, it ends on an anticlimax. Whether or not the 1980 version existed, there would still be no reason to watch this whatsoever. Save your time and do literally anything else, even if its housework.
i loved it so much, please make a couple more!
The Fog (2005) completely ruins the original John Carpenter classic.
I was almost born seeing this movie, love horror movies so much with jumpscare 💯
I don't think that the filmmakers ever saw the original and made the film based on what they thought the original was about.
Actually quite good!!! Give it a chance folks...
Personally this is a very good flick in a campy sort of way. I have always been a fan of these types of movies.
With Tom Welling, Maggie Grace and Selma Blair iand with it being a remake of a John Carpenter flick you'd think it'd be good. Yet somehow these things do not add up to a good film. The script feels a bit confused, like maybe there were too many cooks in the kitchen sort of thing. The direction gives you exactly what you expect without ever really pulling you in. It's serviceable as a film but lacking on anything resembling horror.
a remake for john carpenters fog isn't a bad idea, I can see it being remade, the 2005 version of the fog is nothing but the standard horror clichés we have seen before with the stupid teenage characters and effortless jump scares
This remake version is definitely cursed.
The fog and special effects were a nice addition. This uninspired remake has a bigger focus on the backstory of how the town of Antonio Bay was founded, but none of what made The Fog (1980) great. It's unfortunately another boring example of why you don't need to remake a film that is already good or has achieved a cult-like fandom. There was a clear opportunity at the end of the original to continue the story, but sadly Wainwright was tasked with directing a regurgitated and embellished version of the original. I wanted to like it because Carpenter produced while Debra Hill updated the story, but why was it made at all? Maggie Grace is a poor substitute for Jamie Lee Curtis as Elizabeth.
Absolutely amazing that this was released. I've never been angry with a movie until this came out. Like the wb put out a horror movie that was utter crap.
