Kevin Maher Times (UK) The movie remains essential viewing for Tinseltown completists, and there are some smart set pieces from the director Mike Nichols, including a slapstick traffic jam on a midnight bridge. Rated: 3/5 Apr 22, 2024 Full Review Vincent Canby New York Times [Stockard Channing] is a fine-grained, robust comic talent who keeps the film in proper balance by being just as intensely lunatic as her two co-stars. Blu B The humor is terrible and a major problem. It's like old school screwball type stuff with a weird dark comedy plot to get the wifes money but the humor doesn't have any good setups and it comes off as flat and poorly done. I didn't laugh once the entire time and it just gets so random. It makes the pacing terrible despite not being convuluted and sort of easy going to watch at times. Everything else is subpar. The direction is sometimes decent like the opening but than others it just disappears and feels aimless at times. It feels like once they move in stuff just happens until they put her in the trunk at the end. It would be a lot better if this was funny actually but it makes it aimless and humorless. Worst of both worlds. Beatty & Jack aren't given that good of stuff to work with so I can't really be too hard here but they just aren't that good together. It feels like also this is more concerned about gags than setting up any serious character relationship between the three of them. The wife especially feels more like a punchline for the jokes than anything serious or even passable as a character despite being arguably the main focus of the film. Most of the effort goes to gags more than actual characters. This has lots of production value and does a great job nailing the 20's look but nothing else. I can't say this si convuluted or diffcult to watch. Heck I can't even say I was bored it's just meandering and unfunny. Skip This. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 05/07/25 Full Review Alain E Another good reason to form your own opinion. This is a very funny movie with a snake and a chicken and this doesn’t include Nicholson or Beatty. Channing is a good looking chick as well. There is a little sag in the middle but overall very entertaining. Some very funny exchanges. Channing: “Excuse me. Have we met?” “ This is your husband dear”. The whole exchange about period sanitary pads being mouse beds. And a piece of wisdom: A mean man and a man of means are often the same. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/02/25 Full Review Dannyjoe B Had to see it. Wish I had done something else. Not good. Over-acted, reeks of cocaine. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 11/28/24 Full Review CodyZamboni Z Unfunny comedy, Falls apart from the start, Wacky antics and odd characters come across as silly, creepy, and stupid, Stunning in that Jack Nicholson, Warren Beatty, Mike Nichols thought any of this would work, And the movie looks cheap, Only Stockard Channing provides some amusement. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/26/25 Full Review Joe S Snotty reviews by artsy-fartsy critics who just didn't get it doomed this 1975 movie, which is a Mike Nichols homage to 1930s screwball comedies. The photography is quite beautiful, including in the evocation of a long-gone way of cross-country train travel. Jack Nicholson both mugs and underplays in the role, and Warren Beatty is perfect as the dimwitted buddy/straight man. But Stockard Channing runs away with the picture, both as the beautiful ditz heiress and in the pure gutsy physicality of her performance. A very good movie to see for the first time. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/15/23 Full Review James C What a couple of assholes Nicholson and Beatty appear to be in this. Stockard Channing is great. Mike Nichols was right to take eight years off from directing after this. What is the explanation? Cocaine? Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Read all reviews
