Gattaca Reviews
A very creative movie with a good story.
An interesting plot about eugenics. Lots of great actors.
Gattaca raises some important and timely themes, but it's one of the most bad feeling feel-good movies I can ever recall watching. Its tone is morose from beginning to end, from the sleek and sparse production design to Michael Nyman's oppressing score. I've thought about Gattaca often since first viewing, but I can't say it's an experience to which I've ever wanted to return.
This is a rare sci-fi/cyberpunk movie where the natural contours of the plot win out to the point that it is almost better classified as a drama than as a sci-fi movie. There is a mix of great performance and lacking dialog here and there but the story largely makes up for it with its sound ethical enquiry.
A relatively simple story, without narrative twists and turns that make it seem more complex than it really needs to be. Even so, it is very well told, without doubting the viewer's ability to connect the dots, while also reserving some good surprises along the way. Despite being classified as a science fiction action/thriller, I thought it could have been more dynamic, it seems a little too contemplative at some points. This is not something that harms the ending, but it could have been, in my opinion, even more effective in creating moments of tension and audience engagement. Some motivations could have been clearer, but the protagonist's motivation is well explored. There are some below-average performances, but the main character does very well. The emotional climax at the end is captivating and closes with a flourish. An excellent science fiction film!
Not as good as some dystopian films in terms of the story, a bit more straight forward in the grand scheme of things. Did enjoy the cast though which made up for it.
How have I only just seen this? Superbly produced, acted, directed and a brilliant script. So tightly made, endlessly gripping, real poetry to the storyline and clever without trying to be too smart. Loved it. Saw it on Amazon Prime.
A film with such an annoyingly clever title that’s so well connected to the central conceit that’ll you’ll kick yourself when you find out, Gattaca may have flopped at the box office, but its still remembered as one of the smartest and most profound sci-fi films of the last few decades. The funny thing is, the sci-fi elements are more peripheral than they are integral. Its something the film uses to bolster its premise, rather than using it as a safety net to fall back on. The central storyline is all about fate, destiny and how we believe that some people are born to do great things, and some aren’t. Its sad that some are simply born with everything given to them and others have to fight tooth and nail for the same opportunities. It’s all about succeeding because of the effort you put into something, rather than just expecting it to be handed to you. Getting what you want is great, but its all the more satisfying if you’ve worked hared for it for years. Its this ethos that makes the story so compelling and the lead character’s struggle so believable. It’s scientific approach isn’t exactly watertight, and even those with only a passing knowledge of genetics will probably find themselves asking a lot of questions at times, but the world it creates, the lives its characters live and what they discover about themselves is what makes watching it such a rewarding experience.
Absolutely brilliant. This is the type of Sci-Fi that can impact how we view the world. A perfect blend of drama and thriller, hope and despair. And in the age of CRISPR, this has a whole new relevance to it. In my view, this is 100% bucket list material.
I hate it because my biochem prof loved it Edit: I loved it, please give me a good grade skibidi bop bop yes yes yeskibidi bop bop yesyes
Gattaca is one of those movies that slipped past society on its initial release for whatever reason but has since been given the credit it so deserves. From the acting, the cinematography and the oh so beautiful score the movie tells a tale of future events that are in fact slowly happening now. If you like movies that somehow turn a dystopian future into pure hope and showcase the beauty of human will, this is for you.
Gets talked about often as a great sci-film, while it's not bad, it's always seemed derivative of Brave New World to me. Alas, I'm apparently too stupid to comment on this movie, despite having having read Brave New World and keeping it in my library.
Wow. I was like wow. The themes. The tone. The imagery. Very good. 10/10
This movie is extraordinary, the message went deep into my soul and encouraged me to never give up in life againt all odds
Had the cast and the story to be something good, just not well executed.
One of the best films ever made! -- This film was made for inteliigent people who think out side the box. Mediocre people would never get the point of this film. Anyway, I never get tired of watching this movie, I rewatch this film at least twice a year...and every time I watch it, it always give me fresh new ideas.
My favorite movie of all time and more true today than 1997 when saw in theater. Incredible acting and set design. Well written with storyline that sticks with viewer. A masterpiece!
