Gentlemen Broncos Reviews

Apr 6, 2025

Incredibly juvenile with its phallic sensationalism, Gentlemen Broncos juxtaposes the bland pastel realworld of a dreamer with his over-saturated vision of cult-like sci-fi fiction. The emphasis of exploitation in popular media (in this case, literature) is matched greatly in its character design and casting.

Had some weird cringey spots here and there but otherwise it was a fun story with some eyerolling chuckles and a lot of meaningful heart to tie it all up. Definitely deserves more love <3

If I had not seen Napoleon Dynamite, it might be a different review. But I did see ND, so there. The best scenes are the "imagined" movie clips of 'Yeast Lords' with Sam Rockwell. He is at his Sam Rockwell best in both characters. Priceless. See this movie just for that reason alone. I like Michael Angarano (Sky High), but he may have been miscast here. Napoleon Dynamite did a good job of making the lead character rise from the bottom of the social food chain. That happened here, but not as believable as ND. Everything else works for me on the same uncomfortable level you get from ND. Ensemble cast is amazing. I think it was the perfect movie to follow ND. Why did it bomb at the Box Office? See it. Here endith the lesson. -UKE

It has to be said, this is THE example of the critics just not getting it. To someone who watched this film, preparing to write a review, this seems like an unsubtle, childing film that swims in a lake of absurdism. But to a movie viewer watching a film for the right reasons, this is a masterclass in world-building escapism. A movie that ditches the boring and restrictive rules of criticism to create an experience to be kidnapped by. A truly unique David and Goliath story, with the most wonderful of heroes. Jermain Clement schools this script, playing a class of person already bizarre in the real world (sci-fi novel writers), but showing that with a real understanding of comedy, there really is no limit to how far tropes can be taken. Don't read the reviews, just watch the damn film. You'll have a great time.

Whimsical. Best movie made in 15 years.

Silly, funny and down right bizarre in places...embrace your inner weirdo & enjoy a jolly good romp, possibly on a flying deer ✨🦌✨

Very absurd and heavy parody but I laughed out loud several times, and not at the scatalogical which is much less than some reviewers would have you believe.

TLDR: too much that came across as quirky for the same of being quirky hurt this film (in place of being a bit more of a human story) I really enjoyed Napoleon Dynamite and so was interested in giving this a try. I came away feeling a few things. The positives: - There are some genuinely hilarious moments - The style and characters portrayed in many ways feels similar to Napoleon Dynamite - the warmth between people who tend to be a bit discarded by, or ridiculed by, society. - Much of the writing and acting is good. Clement in particular was very funny. The negatives: - Primarily, the type of charm in Nap Dynamite was drowned out by the feeling that this is weird for the sake of being weird, which I dislike. - This film felt a bit more like the director was making fun of the people portrayed, vs being sympathetic. I think he meant to be sympathetic, but there were a few scenes where it did feel like he was making fun of the people portrayed (many of whom are portrayed as being more small-town, but genuine, people) - Hector Jiminez's character in particular felt like it was in this category. The director had him smiling in a big awkward way most of the time. - The story had a few too many side stories that didn't become anything. The core of the story was there, but the pseudo love interest between main writer and the girl, and between the mother and the angel, were not well developed. They didn't feel natural at all, even for "awkward" people. - There was some dumb humor, for sure, that was over the top. I ignored most of, and credit the actors for not playing it up / over-acting, but the snake that has diarrhea wasn't funny and the girl kissing him with vomit on his face was just too much. It felt like it was trying to be a Something About Mary scene but failed completely. It was just gross.

I felt dumber after watching this

One of the worst movies I've ever watched, not because it's extremely dumb but on top of being dumb it's mostly boring, goes nowhere half the time, story is uninspiring & you don't know who to root for because everyone is awful except the main character who kind of does nothing but act as a punching bag so you end up just feeling bad for him the entire time. What a strange movie, the only good part is the ending, & I don't mean that in a funny way, the ending was satisfying but the rest of the movie was so meh.

For fans of Nacho Libre and Napoleon Dynamite, if you love those movies don't listen to the critics on this one. Not sure why the reviews are so negative as it's funny and very entertaining, strange and off-beat but in a good way. My wife and I had never even heard of it and it pops up on our tv screen suddenly 15 years after it's release so we decide to check it out. Hilarious portrayal of ' Dr. Ronald Chevalier' a famed sci-fi writer by Jemaine Clement (Flight of the Conchords) and a pretty brilliant performance by Sam Rockwell. Great cast and some really funny moments, clocking in at an easy 1 hour and forty minutes. Has all the makings of a cult classic.

The ultimate in funny cringe. Sam Rockwell and Jemaine Clement steal the show but Jennifer Coolidge and Michael Angarano make for a sweet mom-son duo. A few sophomoric gross-out moments but more laughs than eyerolls or groans. This is aging way better than initial reviewers gave it credit for. Cult classic.

One of the worst movies I’ve ever seen. There’s really nothing good to be said about this waste of film.

Skip to 41:21 for the advice the Hess’ should’ve taken when making this.

I am very late to the game--I completely missed this film when it came out! I'm not sure how I ended up with such a different opinion of the movie from everyone else, but I was totally entertained the entire time (which was a very comfortable 90 min) and found myself actually laughing out loud! The movie is silly, awkward, and basic in the best way. It's a refreshing palate cleanser, and a nice little break from reality, where kindness wins and the little guy can make it. The characters were charming, extremely likable (and yes, even relatable), and I feel the story was told in a very sweet way. I'm squeamish, so the vomit and poop jokes weren't my favorite, but there weren't so many of them that they took away from the movie at all. The dialogue and costuming were pitch perfect. I loved the early 90s aesthetic, and enjoyed hearing a story being told about people in a small town, living in realistic settings (instead of over-designed bougie and unattainable designer homes), with bad haircuts and clothing off the rack. This movie is 15 years old already but it somehow feels relevant and fresh since it is in a setting outside of a proper timeline (2009 looks like 1990, tech smacks of 2003, but it is all consistently inconsistent, which feels like a deliberate choice, and therefore isn't annoying). If you like the Lost Skeleton of Cadavra, The Big Lebowski, The Room, Rocky Horror, any of the old scifi classics, take a chance on this film. It will be well worth your time :)

A movie that for the poor reviews was truly ahead of it's time! Heard about this movie from a coworkers who was spouting on about his "flesh pocket" and the absurdity of that claim demanded an explanation. He showed me the trailer, and I had to see what this movie was about. It was a wild ride of shock value (hard to pull of these days) and absurdity, peppered in with great actors playing terrible actors in good fashion. Watch this movie! It's cult classic good!

Really funny, don't know why it's rated so low...

Sit back, relax, shut off your brain, and be ready to cringe. In a good way though, because it's that "I'm glad that's not me" kind. Embrace the satirical slapstick and you won't be too distracted to catch the truly touching story.

One of my favorites, although I was born with a sense of humor, so my opinion shouldn't be valued as much as other critics. Strong characters, delightfully weird and quirky. Sam Rockwell is the sexy cherry on top.

Every single shot is SO WEIRD! Gentlemen Bronco grips with its queasiness. This is ... it just has to be seen. If you cannot handle SO WEIRD, you'll be bothered, so don't bother. For those who are terrified by clowns and LOVE IT, this movie is a good way to spend your time. I love what I just watched. So weird.
