Girl, Interrupted Reviews

Apr 12, 2025

"Girl, Interrupted" had an all star cast, each delivering the promise of a great performance. Angelina Jolie's and Wynona Rider's performances bring out their character's mental illnesses in such a way it is more of a reveal that is the whole spectrum of women's plight to be heard, seen, and free.

Story of my life Well, high school seemed like such a blur I didn't have much interest in sports or school elections And in class I dreamed all day About a rock 'n' roll weekend And the girl in the front of the room So close yet so far, ya know she never seemed to notice That this silly school-boy crush wasn't just pretend Life goes by so fast You only want to do what you think is right Close your eyes and then it's past Story of my life Story of my life, la la la la Story of my life The story of my life And I went down to my old neighborhood The faces have all changed, there's no one there left to talk to And the pool hall I loved as a kid Is now a 7-Eleven And I went downtown to look for a job I had no training, no experience to speak of And I looked at the holes in my jeans And I turned and headed back Life goes by so fast You only want to do what you think is right Close your eyes and then it's past Story of my life Story of my life, la la la la Story of my life Story of my life And good times come and good times go I only wish the good times would last a little longer And I think about the good times we had And why they had to end So I sit at the edge of my bed I strum my guitar and I sing an outlaw love song Thinkin' 'bout what you're doin' now And when you're comin' back Life goes by so fast You only want to do what you think is right Close your eyes and then it's past Story of my life Story of my life Story of my life Story of my life, la la la la Story of my life The story of my life

I wanted to watch this film because its title intrigued me. On the face of it it makes no sense, so I wanted to understand when people used the title, or made reference to the film in conversation. The film stars a lovely, shorn Winona Ryder and Angelina Jolie, (not yet famous). The girls are inmates in an American mental institution, which is exactly the same as most mental institutions in films, especially those (for some reason) run by nuns. Whoopi Goldberg is also present as a nurse, but she's just present. She is a good actress, but sleepwalks through this film. Ryder does better, but Jolie steals the show, her character is really the person the film should be about. The film's treatment of mental illness is not in any sense enlightening, we could be watching Boris Karloff in Asylum or Jack Nicholson in One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. We are told Ryder's character's diagnosis, but she does not exhibit much of anything throughout the film. When one of the patients hangs herself, we don't care, because the character has not been built in a way that makes us interested in her. Worth a watch, mainly for the three lead actresses, but ultimately unmoving.

Vale a pena assistir.

The “mental institution” is a natural setting for incubating strong performances, for, by default, it offers a range of emotions, idiosyncrasies, power imbalances, and unreliable characters. Susanna (Winona Ryder) is stuck (of her own accord) in one such institution after a suicide attempt. She’s from a privileged background, but isn’t going full Patty Hearst or anything and just wants a future different from that of her mother. In the institution, Susanna meets and befriends women with all sorts of afflictions, including, but not limited to, pathological lying, sexual trauma, self-harm, schizophrenia, sociopathy, laxative addiction, bipolar disorder, et al. While the parallels to One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest are obvious, this is a much different movie when it comes to the conflict. Here, Susanna flirts with rebellion against the institution — typically anthropomorphized through Nurse Owens (Whoopi Goldberg) — but is really engaged in an eternal battle over the influences of a fellow patient, Lisa (Angelina Jolie). Everyone already knows Jolie’s performance steals the show, and while I’d seen Girl, Interrupted already (probably 15 years ago or so), I had no recollection of how good she truly is in this movie. A lesser performance could’ve made the story delve into stereotype after stereotype shepherded by the big girl on campus. But instead, Jolie plays Lisa as a menacing, charismatic leader. Someone who the women want to admire from a distance, only complying with her demands for adventure when they have sufficiently fallen under her spell. Lisa is a bully. Lisa is a villain. Lisa is the reason you watch this movie, despite the excellent ensemble cast. It seems like every other scene the women are breaking curfew, journeying to abandoned wings of the institution, and even breaking out with zero resistance at will. While Claymoore may be the least secure mental institution in American history, its porous walls permit our characters to drift, explore, and follow their leader. RT (53/84) is shocking. I’m with the audience on this one.

Underrated af! Perfect acting and a very well-done screenplay. A very important work about mental illness and life inside asylums and mentally illness structures.

i love this movie so much. as sad as it is, i am literally lisa and daisy combined. this movie also showed the reality and the flaws of what being in a mental hospital is like. this movie will forever be my favorite. i recommend to not watch this movie ONLY if you get triggered easily though.

I had to force myself to watch the whole thing. I didn't see it when it came out, and now I know why. This is probably one of the only times I agree with critics, it was predictable and slow. I kept asking my daughter (14yr old) why she liked it and she couldn't "put a finger on it". This is just one of many, many starred movies that just didn't make the cut.

One of the few movies I’d give a 5.

I chose the film rating and mental health rating with 5 stars due to the accuracy this film portrays mental health disorders especially borderline personality disorder. It shows a true showcase of how people who struggle with patterns of instability of interpersonal relationships, self-image, and affects, and marked impulsivity throughout this film. As well as how it was portrayed in the 1960's. To top it off, Winona Ryder's and Angelina Jolie's acting was top notch. I would recommend this film to anyone who wants to get a better understanding of how mental illness can take control of people's lives, but also to get a better understanding of their struggles.

This movie approaches mental illness from a perspective from a patient. This is important to note. This is not a movie that a good psychoanalyst would write, as all characters are very shallowly represented in their psychological suffering . In fact, none of the characters is very likable, perhaps exactly because they’re all represented as flawed and self absorbed in their misery. Nonetheless, it is still able to reflect the problem of mental health and its treatment. The lack of her knowledge of what her own conflicts are is telling. One would hope that after 18 months, one would learn a bit more about herself. A person who is not very psychologically minded and holds to their symptoms and a possibly a therapeutic approach that doesn’t foster curiosity over oneself. She thus come up with some answers, which are as simplistic as her lack of answers. Another aspect that’s well captured is the relationships that are established among patients despite their illness. I think the casting is great. Almost typed. Wyona brings up the flavor of self indulgent sufferer. If they selected Hathaway for this role, I think the effect would have been similar. Goldberg, the grandiose nurse who thinks she knows it all. Jolie is a bit out of place and her role required a bit more of acting.

Incredible film! It's so easy to get attached to a character, they are all so so interesting in their own ways! So diverse yet they all have something in common. The acting is phenomenal, there is happiness, freedom, love, connection and healing as well as sadness, jealousy, anger, frustration, confusion, manipulation and tragedy. Once you watch it, there will 100% be a part that sticks with you for a while. The story line is never ending, always something happening. 100/10.

É errado você levemente se identificar com um pouco de cada personagem? Se for, me prendam.

The film itself is irritating to watch and based on a true story. Well-performed young actors especially Jolie's screen presence made this worth-watching.
