As someone who is dating someone with a similar disability, I have not seen a lot of representation done in such a real way before. Unfortunately, language, nudity, and drugs mar the portrayal a bit, making it slightly less presentable to a wider audience, but as a conservative, it is nothing I haven't gotten used to. Otherwise, I could recommend it to my friends and family. It was very uplifting to see the unconditional friendship between the two. Additionally, the same holds true for Danny’s girlfriend. I thought the relationship between Danny and his girlfriend was inspiring, but left out any hesitancy or excitement when she first met him. Girls tend to discuss their dates with other people, especially their girlfriends. This seemed to be missing. The film authentically portrays his journey of self-acceptance, vulnerability, and relationships, without reducing him to his disability. It reminded me of my own experiences navigating intimacy and confronting societal expectations. Danny’s story, like my own, shows that disabled bodies are deserving of love, connection, and complex representation in media. Rated 5/5 Stars •  Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/27/24 Full Review Josh N I rented Good Bad Things at the suggestion of two people whose opinions I respect mightily, and I'm so glad I did. The movie was wonderful because it focused on the HUMAN relationships between Danny and Madi, as well as his prior girlfriend and the others in his orbit. His disability was clearly present, and so were the ways that Jason, Madi, his dad, and others helped manage access when needed, but it was not the story's main focus. Even in the moments it was considered, they took care to ask what he wanted, be sure he was ready to move/transfer, and to let him do for himself when he didn’t need/want help - they helped, but he maintained autonomy. The scene when Danny and Jason were pitching the execs at Rubi, when he let go of the foundering slide deck & rehearsed plan and just shared his experience of finding love through the app was a highlight of the interpersonal facet to me. As one of the recommenders suggested, the movie shows all the NUANCE of navigating this world full of other people and their perceptions and assumptions, especially about love and relationships, and representation of disability as a context, not a focus - it’s a powerful perspective. As the star rating says, I definitely recommend Good Bad Things to anyone who wants to see a solid love story amid the full variety of people and situations in the world.
