Goodbye Solo Reviews
I thought this was a slightly bland film but it became quite poignant by the end. There are unanswered questions by the end but there's some substance to it too. Not a bad watch. I think it was the subtlety of the ending that managed to move me. The taxi driver character, Solo, is very talkative, if anything in an over the top way, which may bother some but its this contrast with him talking quite urban talk, quite informally, while the other character, William, is clearly in a bit of personal bother, being quite serious and in a low state of mind, not wanting to reveal too much about his life. Yes, I'd recommend this film.
So...the lead actor was very good. Gave some immersive insight into the life of an immigrant. a good indie.
Really great story, love Solos attitude. I'd give it five stars if we learned a little more about William and his family. I hope things worked out well for Solo despite the troubles he faced.
Wow, so glad I stumbled upon this one during a trailer. Very touching story, would recommend to anyone.
Goodbye Solo was perplexing, like I can't decide whether I really liked it or not. The film is extremely simplistic in its approach, and is very simply shot. The characters are very believable, usually spouting unremarkable dialogue that emulates the conversation between two people. Savane and West do a good job of sticking to the plan. The film moves slowly, but the last quarter is pretty wrenching, and that's what Goodbye Solo is going for.
honestly, there's not a bad thing in this movie. that said, despite being ok with it being a slow-building relationship movie, i still found it a little bit lacking; can't really explain why
I think "gripping" is the best adjective you could use to describe this movie. It starts heavy and doesn't let up.
This film was so moving. The actor playing Solo was so engaging. All characters were well cast and came across as very real and raw. Incredibly sad but with some really uplifting moments. A must see movie.
I like slow movies and this is as slow as it gets. Throw in a nice lead character and you could have some movie magic. But the tagline for this movie is ridiculous: two strangers come together and both of their lives are changed forever? Puh-leese. Unless by forever you mean like five days until he jumps to his death. The topic is nicely established in the first scene. I like this way of building suspense. From the start, Solo is a pretty solid character...both in the character of the character and the way he is portrayed. William...not so much. Red West is sometimes convincing, sometimes not. Furthermore, if you put a guy in his situation, I'm not sure he's as open to some of Solo's antics as the character in the movie. All in all, a pretty nice flick. There are many aspects to like. The characters are mostly good. You really do begin to like both of them. And they didn't pull any punches at the end. That was refreshing. That's mostly what I liked about it: two strangers did indeed cross paths. Probably one life was changed. The other it was too late to change, but at least he had someone looking out for him. There's a soothing quality to both that idea and the pace of the movie.
Powerful and moving. Excellent character development, excellent story, excellent camerawork. This film certainly didn't get the amount of exposure it deserves, due to its status as a "independent film"; what a shame.
Found on the Beeb's iPlayer - Solo, a taxi driver, meets William who intends to commit suicide, the story follows the pair from their introduction to one another. The film displays bipolar emotions throughout; hope yet despair, humour yet tragedy, and this contrast emanates from the characters of Solo (ever optimistic) and William (cheerless). An impressive and thought provoking picture.
