Goodnight Mommy Reviews

Goodnight Mommy certainly has more misses than the original movie. There are some scary moments, but the overall tension of the original movie isn’t present in the remake.

| Sep 8, 2023

The remake dilutes the most shocking, violent elements of the original, in a way that reduces the film to a rather stale few hours of emotional and physical torment that underuses Watts' talent.

Goodnight Mommy is a disappointing affair; it somehow manages to be both not as good as the original and way too similar, begging us to question why it has been made.

| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Jul 24, 2023

To Goodnight Mommy’s credit, it is not a shot-by-shot remake. Some visuals from the original remain, but they don’t pack the same punch. The Crovetti twins simply don’t loom over a tied-up Watts in the same way Elias and Lukas Schwarz did in the original.

Goodnight Mommy is a decent horror vehicle, designed to entertain but lacking the stamina and direction to terrify.

| May 20, 2023

A sort of Disney-esque interpretation of the forceful original movie that dilates between melodramas and half measures the intense tour the force that we were able to enjoy in 2014.

| Original Score: 5/10 | Oct 20, 2022

doesn’t have much that is unique or original to offer visually, but its dramatic conflict is potent enough to carry us through to the eventual revelation we may or may not see coming

| Original Score: 3/4 | Oct 17, 2022

What a treat of terror Goodnight Mommy is...The kid actors do a fine job but the ever-versatile Watts does great work, putting on the creeps and letting loose in a film-owning turn that keeps us on edge as to how far she’ll go.

| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Oct 15, 2022

...a decent-enough thriller that’s never quite as engrossing or enthralling as one might’ve hoped...

| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Oct 13, 2022

Matt Sobel’s remake of a 2014 psychological thriller by Austrians Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala, about twin boys questioning the identity of their mother, can’t fully recreate the icy chill.

| Original Score: 2/4 | Sep 30, 2022

This English-language update plays like a more sanitized version – one that lacks the guts to really take this story to darker and more unsettling places.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Sep 27, 2022

If you’ve seen the original and know what’s coming, this version is a fine if toned-down experience, but if you don’t know, it’s probably still going to offer you something shockingly unexpected.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Sep 26, 2022

A mixed bag, but there are definitely moments where the performances, direction and photography sync up for an effectively moody atmosphere.

| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Sep 26, 2022

The writing here relies on predictable, expository dialogue. The original, by making use of long periods of silence, told the story with much more tension and mystery.

| Sep 23, 2022

This is an unsettling psychological horror movie that's slightly dragged down by horror movie cliches

| Original Score: 3/5 | Sep 22, 2022

As competent and well-crafted as it is, Goodnight Mommy fails to recapture what made the original memorably potent.

| Sep 22, 2022

Even if Goodnight Mommy doesn’t hold a mirror to its source material, it still makes for a run-of-the-mill watch led by Watts doing what she does best.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Sep 20, 2022

Maybe the worst thing this forgettable remake does is associate “Goodnight Mommy” with being soft and dull when the original is absolutely something much more severe and scarring.

| Original Score: C- | Sep 20, 2022

The film is uninspired compared to its source material and entirely too predictable.

| Sep 19, 2022

This is not nearly as intense or terrifying [as the original].
