Critics Consensus

Hairspray is perhaps John Waters' most accessible film, and as such, it's a gently subversive slice of retro hilarity.

Kevin Maher Times (UK) Ricki Lake’s unselfconscious performance as the all-dancing, all-bouffant Tracy Turnblad is a joy, Debbie Harry makes a fabulous bigot, while Waters seems to delight in the many toe-tapping dance routines as well as his own deliciously arch dialogue. Rated: 4/5 Jun 7, 2023 Full Review David Robinson Times (UK) It is absurd and jolly, parodying not only the worst conventions of the teen film but also the Sixties social-conscience movie, with an anti-racist sub-plot. charles w Very fun movie with good dancing and acting!! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/23/22 Full Review Haley R I thoroughly enjoyed watching this movie. What made this movie so memorable to me was the amazing soundtrack and dancing it had. I loved the sixties style of clothing, hair, fashion etc. The musical numbers were very exciting and fun to watch and listen to. The characters were very distinct and unique and I really appreciated that. I also think the movie was very funny and had a lot of silly moments. I like how the movie did not take itself super serious, but it still had important and serious topics that were discussed. The exaggeration of some of the characters and their personalities added to the comedic style of the movie. I would definitely recommend this movie to anyone who likes fun musicals or just anyone in general. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/17/25 Full Review Jaqueline V The fun and upbeat movie Hairspray is set in Baltimore in the 1960s. I enjoyed this movie more than I thought I would. This film for sure hits deeper themes of body positivity and racial integration. Throughout the movie I enjoyed the extravagant dances and the fun costumes. In the movie Tracy Turnblad plays a confident, Baltimore teen who aspires to dance on the well-known Corny Collins Show. The film had honestly given me the sense that I was living in that period of time because of how it was filmed and honestly a little nostalgic with the quality of the camera. I liked how at the end she is able to win the dance competition and be able to get the guy as well. It was definitely an uplifting movie. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/16/25 Full Review Kiara R I actually ended up LOVING this movie. I like how there was a male actor playing as Edna. I had watched this previously out of curiosity and have seen the other two remakes to this. When I rewatched it in class, I really enjoyed it. Some of the lines said in the movie would probably end up in the movie being "canceled" in todays society. The reason I say that is because movies back then were more inclined to say absurd things or out of pocket things and get away with it while people never took it seriously but unlike today I think if it was released in current years it would probably have some backlash on some of the lines in this movie. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/16/25 Full Review Joshua H Hairspray (1988), directed by John Waters and starring Ricki Lake, is a fun, quirky, and surprisingly impactful film set in 1960s Baltimore. It tells the story of Tracy Turnblad, a teenager who dreams of dancing on a popular 온라인카지노추천 show. What starts as a teen musical quickly turns into a statement on racial integration and body positivity. Ricki Lake brings a lot of confidence to her role, making Tracy a lovable and empowering character. Tracy's story is a fun one to follow and watch. The supporting cast, including Divine, Debbie Harry, and Sonny Bono adds to the film’s bright and positive energy. While the tone is lighthearted, the film doesn’t hide away from important social issues, which makes it more than just a retro dance movie. Some moments in the film are a bit over-the-top, but that’s part of its appeal. Hairspray is a unique blend of humor, music, and social commentary that holds up surprisingly well. It's not perfect, but it’s definitely worth watching. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/13/25 Full Review Ayden S Watching Hairspray felt like stepping into a colorful and rebellious time capsule to the 60s. John Waters did a great job on making 1960s Baltimore look wild and energetic with bringing up serious issues like racial segregation. I loved how the movie didn't seem as serious but at the same time tackled important topics with so much passion. Everything from the characters like Tracy Turnblad and the catchy music pull you in, making you feel good by the end of the film. The movie's weirdness only makes it more lovable. It's quirky, loud, and a little chaotic, but that's what makes it special. If you genuinely something fun that leaves you feeling good and makes you think! I totally recommend this to friends and family! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/28/25 Full Review Read all reviews
