Hard Truths Reviews
I never thought I'd find a more miserable character than a certain person in my life. It made me realize it could be worse.
Good movie that shows what can happen if you let unresolved issues linger in your life. It can affect how you feel about yourself, how others feel about you, and how you approach the world.
This movie was outstanding. Every single actor in this movie were so good, and so believable. The main actor and her sister were phenomenal. The husband, son, and the two daughters of the sister were also really good. They brought the story together. The struggle between hopefulness and hopelessness was on full display in this movie. You will do yourself a favor to see the movie. It speaks to many of our common emotions.
The acting is superb, but the movie is a little slow at times. If you grew up around depression or narcissism or schizophrenia, you might be a little triggered, but overall the movie does an amazing job and showing what the reality of living with mental health issues in a home can be like and its affects on the people around the sufferers.
Still thinking about it hours later, in a good way.
A psychologically rich examination of intergenerational trauma with comedic moments. this Superbly acted.
I have never snot-nosed cried in a movie theater!… until now. This movie is so raw and yet you leave slightly with hope but with more questions that you came with. I’ve never really hated and loved a character this much.
not always an easy watch, but a movie i will return to. Mike Leigh is like an English Raymond Carver, but with film instead of short stories. spectacular performances, so much unresolved pathos. somehow, its even hopeful?
It was cool, I expected a movie with deep meaning, that was going to force a conversation, but their were too many plot holes, that I needed. What is the bases of Pansy depression? How long has she been like that? What epiphany did she have at the end, and is she planning on changing or continue the cycle?
Very well acted film. I'm a previous fan of Mike Leigh films & Jean Marie-Baptiste, especially since Secrets & Lies. Ending was left purposely ambiguous.
excellent performances!
Performance of the year
HARD TRUTHS' lived-in screenplay is something I'd expect nothing less from Leigh. Never afraid to cut to the core of life & his characters. He doesn't shy away from acknowledging what weighs on us all: pain. Wonderfully contrasting & partnered performances from Baptiste & Austin
Outstanding character study
The movie had no ending. Only reason I gave it 2 stars is due to the GREAT performances. When the credits rolled the audience was like WTH. We never got a clear explanation of her actions.
A true dramedy. The meme-worthy rants from the lead character are a wonder to behold.
I totally understood the point of the movie but the execution of it was horrible. And the use of music in my opinion took away from the impact the writer was intending. Lastly the ending was horrible.
This film tells a story of family conflict in a raw and unexpected way. Surely everyone will recognize a character or two from someone in their own family. Marianne Jean-Batiste plays the most unlikable character with a great deal of insight and sympathy.
Excellent performance by Marianne!
Several layers to this movie. This movie was thought provoking. It was amazing watching the family dynamic with mental health. This movie evoked a reaction in me. Didn't live the ending but we created our own revelations.
