Heart and Souls Reviews
A nice piece of supernatural whimsy that comes together in an uplifting fashion.
It could be because I used to watch Heart and Souls a lot when I was younger, but I enjoy this movie a lot. A young Robert Downey Jr. showcases his comedic and dramatic acting chops in the lead role, while Charles Grodin, Alfre Woodard, Kyra Sedgwick, and Tom Sizemore all bring some of their best work to the table as his motley crew of guardian angels. Yes, this movie is a little cheesy and yes, the sentimentality holds up better than some of the humor, but Heart and Souls has such an innocent sweetness to it that you have to be completely heartless to not feel something while you're watching it.
Really cute and heartwarming story with likable characters. RDJ is fantastic, as usual, but the supporting cast is great, too. I truly enjoyed this movie from beginning to end.
It's sappy and sentimental, but it's a good bit of fun. I wasn't sure about revisiting this one, as I feared it would not have aged well, but it still has the ability to charm. The premise is a tad played out, but it's handled in a nice way here.
amazing and beautiful movie.
Funny, heartwarming, very entertaining! Only complaint is the misguided notion that one soul turns into another soul. It is definitely worth your time.
This movie is a great reminder of how important family is and the power of helping others. A must see for the entire family! Bring tissue..
Great fun, emotional, just a really good family movie with positive messaging. Deals with some complicated issues so maybe not for kids too young, but it is fantastic.
Back in 1959, Penny (Alfre Woodard) a hardworking single mother, a singer with stage fright named Harrison (Charles Grodin), the lovelorn Julia (Kyra Sedgwick) and a small-time con named Milo (Tom Sizemore) all die when their driver Hal (David Paymer) drives off an overpass. Meanwhile, Thomas Reilly (Robert Downey Jr.) is born at the same time as the four passengers' souls must stay on Earth and take on Thomas as their friend, which eventually makes him think that he's insane. Thirty-four years later, Hal returns to use his bus to take the four souls to heaven, as long as they finally achieve their goals. Penny must find out what happened to her kids, Harrison must sing in public, Julia must find her ex-boyfriend John and confess her feelings, and Milo must return the stamp book he stole. They need Thomas' help but now he's a driven banker who doesn't care about people and keeps himself closed off from his girlfriend Anne (Elisabeth Shue). Of course it all works out, but the real surprise is that director Ron Underwood was the first assistant director on Tourist Trap and would go on to make Tremors. This had four people working on the story -- Gregory and Erik Hansen (whose short film was adapted to make this full-length version) and S.S. Wilson and Brent Maddock, the team who wrote Tremors. I love that Julia is a waitress at The Purple Onion, a real San Francisco club where so many comedians performed. When Bob Newhart is seen on stage, that's his son Robert William Newhart.
If you gave this movie less than 5 stars, you have no heart, and you have no soul. Stellar acting by every single one of the cast members. Unlike movies today, this movie actually has proper pacing, tone, backstory and character development. A really well-written and well-acted gem, and one of R.D.J's finest.
Loved it. Totally touching. Top notch acting from all involved!
A film which ages, surprisingly, well. A stellar performance by Robert Downy Jr and Kyra Sedgwick. An underappreciated 80's classic.
I remembered seeing and liking this film as a kid and it was only five bucks on Amazon, a surefire purchase for me. I found that it hit all those same notes as when I was a kid. It's a very emotional film, leading to a few times where I had to fight hard not to get teary eyed. It's also charming, funny, imaginative, and shot very well. The performances stand out here. Downey is so fun to watch, and it's great seeing those hints of Tony Stark in his early performances. Gordon, Sizemore, and Woodard were also fantastic. The script could've used a little tightening, in my personal opinion, specifically scenes with Shue, but it's the only slight negative in an otherwise awesome film.
Mildly amusing but nothing special.
Nice sentimental Romantic Comedy with a great cast, Directed by Tremors and City Slicker's Ron Underwood
Sentimental and sappy - the afterlife scheme doesn't totally make sense - terrific performances by the whole ensemble, especially Alfre Woodard and Robert Downey. The story is well crafted and moves me every time!
This is by far one of the best ensemble movies I've ever seen. It stands the test of time and is appropriate for viewers of most ages. Being an avid Robert Downey Jr. fan, I have to say I think this is one of, if not the best role he's played.
