After the tragic death of his father, 18 year old Totone is thrust into the unexpected and very adult role of looking after his younger sister and their failing family farm in the Jura section of France. He assumes even more responsibility when he enters a cash competition for the best Comte cheese made in this western part of the French Alps. A "verité" look at the hardscrabble life of French agriculture, it is simultaneously a moving love story and above all an ode to the love of cheese.

Wendy Ide Observer (UK) Ultimately, the comté is beside the point: the nourishment in this terrific, big-hearted drama comes from Courvoisier’s satisfyingly full-blooded characters. Rated: 4/5 Apr 15, 2025 Full Review Larushka Ivan-Zadeh Times (UK) [Courvoisier's] vivid film is so alive you may believe you could even reach out and touch it — or eat it. Rated: 4/5 Apr 14, 2025 Full Review Jonathan Romney Financial Times This is not necessarily an outstanding or unusual production as contemporary French realism goes, but it is robust, enjoyable and unsentimental — the good stuff, raw and unpasteurised. Rated: 4/5 Apr 11, 2025 Full Review Eleanor Capaldi The Skinny In Louise Courvoisier’s debut feature, she crafts a coming-of-age story that's sensitive yet visceral. Rated: 4/5 Apr 8, 2025 Full Review Padaí Ó Maolchalann In Review Online This is a fine, perceptive film with a modesty that belies its emotional depth and Courvoisier’s technical acuity. Apr 3, 2025 Full Review Derek Chen Spectrum Culture While Holy Cow seldom drifts out of feel-good territory, it certainly has enough going for it to break free from the programmatic genre tropes that typically mar such productions. Audience Member This is an excellent film, incredibly well acted (by locals rather than professionals), poignant, and nicely paced. The rural setting isn’t the least bit sentimental - the Jura countryside is beautiful, wild, but lived in. There’s quite an edge of violence to life in the village, especially male violence, but the threat of physical roughness is cut by the tenderness shown by the kid at the heart of the story towards his little sister, and kindnesses between his friends. There’s one moment of generosity from one teenage boy to another when you could hear the cinema gasp. It’s one of those small stories that lingers in your heart. Also leaves you wanting to eat good French cheese. 🧀 🇫🇷 Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/21/25 Full Review Audience Member Cinematic perfection. Superb characterisation. Bittersweet heaven. I left the cinema wanting to watch it again immediately. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/15/25 Full Review Read all reviews
