The Holy Mountain Reviews
This film was to say the least mind bending and made a lasting impression. So in this movie we follow a powerful alchemist and several others on a quest of enlightenment to the Holy mountain. I think that this movie has striking graphics and each scene to me felt like some kind of painting. However I had no idea where to begin when it came to unpacking the themes embedded in the movie. I could pick up the small meanings such as the touches of war, religion and sex but to me it wasn’t completely clear. The movie is almost like a surreal dream full of strange characters and many people can give different interpretations of it. Maybe if I watch it again, I'll catch all the things I missed in this movie.
This movie has a lot of deep meaning and I can understand the allure and love. However, I felt overwhelmed watching this movie. Confused with all the aggressive imagery it had and needed many discussions to truly see and comprehend what I had just seen. I personally found it an intense watch and would only recommend it, if you like a movie that causes you to reflect and don’t mind fast paced story telling. I also found the amount of nudity and setting to be eerie. While watching the movie I just kept hoping I could take it off since the movie put me on edge and made me uncomfortable. I think after my first watch I would give it 1 star. It wasn’t until discussing it with my class and hearing more of the purpose of the film that I came to understand how this movie can be beautiful if you can ignore the tense imagery. Settling with my rating of 2 and half. Since it does allow you to take a deeper look at greed and spirituality. I think the film does touch on the way some people of power act and can still be relevant or connected to today's struggles.
As I watched The Holy Mountain, I had a mixed of emotions but confusion was the one I felt the most. The majority of the scenes throughout the film feels very abrupt, thought provoking and mind blowing. Personally, this genre of film is not my favorite and only watched it because I was assigned to for class. Prior to watching this film I also watch El Topo which honestly felt really hard to get through because again I don't particularly enjoy these kinds of films. The plot lines, dialogue, and pacing can feel a little awkward and uncomfortable at times in my personal opinion.Overall I personally didn't enjoy the film and wouldn't watch again however I do believe regardless everyone should watch a movie at least once and then decide what their opinion on it is.
The Holy Mountain is a wild movie, in a mind blowing way possible. Watching it felt less like a movie and more like being dropped into someone else’s dream, or maybe a really intense spiritual trip. This movie is packed with surreal, symbolic, and straight-up bonkers of imagery like frogs in military uniforms, body doubles made of wax, and a guy who turns poop into gold. Yeah, that kinda crazy stuff happens. Something you wouldn't find in many other movies. The plot is kind of there, but it’s more about the experience. It’s more of a philosophical experience, it makes you question everything, from religion and capitalism to your own sense of self. It’s definitely not for everyone because some parts are disturbing or just completely weird, but if you’re into experimental films or just want something that’ll totally scramble your brain in a good way, you should definitely watch it.
The movie Holy Mountain film in 1973 by Alejandro Jodorowsky, is not my favorite since it is a bit much for me. Alejandro Jodorowsky also made the film el topo and I get the same feeling graphic and your typical movie. I was very confused through out the movie but at times it was interesting. The movies touches on religion and socio political trends which is confusing as someone that does not know much about it. Overall I feel very mix feeling about this movies because it was a bit graphic but it had a lot to say. If you're not afraid of watching graphic scenes I do think you should at least give it a try.
The movie Holy Mountain by Alexander Jodorowsky is a very strange but powerful film. Many of the scenes gave me a feeling of questioning what exactly I was seeing and feeling. The scenes contain many unusual and shocking images while pulling you into a world that doesnt really carry any normal logic. The movie itself is very messy and I feel like it was intentionally done this way which is very different from the movies I am used to seeing. The movie does have ties with religion and art which can sometimes be a little difficult to wrap your head around but in some instances I felt like the religion connection was obvious. Overall, the movie was somewhat disturbing and with its unorganized fashion I would not watch this movie, however I would recommend this to someone who likes movies that do not have distinct plots. Especially people who enjoy movies that kinda send you on a goose hunt.
My thoughts on The Holy Mountain are I was shocked at how this movie was not like how I imagined it to be. As soon as I began to watch the film I was kinda confused about what was happening and a lot of the scenes in the beginning in general were a bit disturbing and uncomfortable. Apart from those scenes, I did understand that this film involves religion in it. In a way, this film seems like it’s meant to question things and make the audience think about what the meaning of the film is. Overall, for me, I didn’t like the film because of the disturbing scene but I understand why people do like this film. I would maybe watch this film again in the future but this is a film I recommend watching on your own.
The Holy Mountain was a strange but visually stunning film. The movie is full of bizarre and surreal images, creating a dreamlike experience that’s hard to fully understand but impossible to ignore. It tells us the story of a group of people on a journey to enlightenment, filled with strange rituals and vivid symbolism. The film doesn’t follow a typical plot and is more about provoking thought and emotions through its visuals and themes. It’s unsettling at times but undeniably creative.
A very creative way to tell a story in cinema. I enjoyed the attention to details the imagery in this movie provided. The underlying themes of religion, war, and sex were perfectly utilitized by Jodorowsky. Recommend watching this film who genuinely enjoy hidden details and imagery in movies!
I would definitely recommend this movie! I would say it is worth the watch but definitely not something you can just watch for fun or mindlessly. This film has a lot of important symbolism and if you do not pay attention it is easy to get lost and confused. I had to watch this film twice to understand some of what Jodorowsky was trying to portray. This film is definitely not gonna be everyone’s cup of tea but I would suggest to give it a shot. I would recommend watching this movie with a group. I feel like with my friends it was more of an interesting experience and we all caught on to different things in each scene. I will say there is a quite a bit of nudity so beware if you’re not into that stuff!!
After rewatching the film, I have to say I changed my mind just a little bit. At first, I was just genuinely confused about everything that was going on. All I understood from it was that it involved religion that was portrayed using surrealism (I still mostly think that). However, I feel like now the intention of the film is starting to click, but very lightly. I believe Jodorowsky didn't create it for everybody to understand it the same way. I feel as if it was made to push the gas on our imaginations. After watching it the first time, I was too busy trying to understand the plot (still don't fully understand it). However during the second time, I focused more on the visuals and messages that were being portrayed and it was a completely different experience. While it still felt like a fever dream or acid experience, I realized that I shouldn't take everything so literal.
This wild film uses the beliefs & drug culture of the 1960s to show how religion, politics & human emotion cause the opposite of what is taught.
My overall thought of the movie was how it was weird and strange. It was full of weird images and some things didn't make much sense to me. Throughout the story line of this movie it shows a lot of religious and spiritual themes. I will say some things are disturbing to watch and made me a bit uncomfortable but the visuals on the movie were interesting. This movie definitely makes you think and if you like odd movies then I say go for it and watch this movie.
Here’s a 125-word version: --- The Holy Mountain is one of the most surreal and mind-bending films I’ve ever seen, other than Inception. Alejandro Jodorowsky creates a visual and emotional experience that feels more like an art piece than a traditional movie. It interlinks that weird imagery that critiques religion, capitalism, and society. It honestly feels like an LSD trip. This is not something to see carefree—it's confusing, disorienting, and brazenly bizarre, yet for whatever reason that makes it fully captivating. You're going to hate it or won't be able to shake from your head. If you enjoy experimental or arthouse films, view this. To the others, proceed with caution. It's a remorseless roller coaster that will never be forgotten.
The movie was a pretty interesting experience and from the very beginning, the movie showed its weirdness. Without any words or dialogue to help guide the film, it made it a little difficult to understand the plot and to follow along with all the weird events going on in the screen. It also has a lot of nudity, blood and just violent scenes so I would not recommend it for sensitive viewers. Other than that though, the film was quite the experience. It really has changed my view on movies and introduced me to a genre of films that I had never encountered before. If you can, I recommend watching it. Just be prepared to cringe, gasp, and be confused yet intrigued for the next two hours.
Holy Mountain is a bit interesting to watch; there's a lot going on in the film. For sensitive viewers, if you personally don’t like violence or seeing animals being harmed then I recommend not viewing this. It has a “dream” like taste to it. You can see there is some religion involved in the film too. This film however has a surrealistic aesthetic. There's a lot of "odd" scenes and there's some symbolic things to the film. The film is supposed to be based on "Ascent of Mountain Carmel" by John of the Cross and "Mount Analogue" by Rene Daumal. The Characters in the film may seem odd to some viewers but each of them had their own uniqueness to their character. Alejandro Jodorowsky’s films are a bit distinct. His style with films are spiritual and surrealistic. I like watching odd things in films but I think this one is a bit too odd for me personally. Perhaps I didn’t pick up on a lot of things.
The Holy Mountain is a trip, both literal and metaphorical. There's so much vivid, shocking imagery in Jodorowsky's surreal masterpiece it's nearly impossible to take it all in. This is a visual assault of bizarre symbolism, satirical commentary, and philosophical reflections. In this film, nothing makes sense, but everything seems strangely significant. This film is intentionally offbeat and fragmented, making it feel like a series of strange rituals. Instead of watching for comfort, it challenges and provokes you. You'll both be confused and captivated by The Holy Mountain if you enjoy avant-garde cinema and confront human nature's strangest aspects. It's a wild ride, definitely not for everyone. I would say the film is different than films i have seen not my taste just found it weird but interesting in my own way.
Visually, the movie is really captivating. The tower in which the Alchemist presides is the most distinctive part of this whole film. The numerous symbolism and commentary on religious practices and worldviews is fun to interpret from the viewer’s perspective. The cards presented at the beginning, for example, give a lot of context to the characters if they are known or researched. You can see the influences this film had on modern day films, such as the stylization. The movie had a bit of an ironic-comedic ending which I enjoyed. Socially, Jodorowsky was willing to push boundaries in this film that were treated more conservatively culturally, regarding sex, nudity and commentary on theism which felt very counterculture when considering movies from the 70’s. The ending was funny. I did enjoy this movie, even if parts felt nonsensical, but I don’t know if I would consider it a favorite of mine.
The Holy Mountain was a movie I didn't favor. It included shocking parts, but that couldn't keep me engaged. This movie has so much going on that I don't even get the meaning behind it. They has a lot of religious and political sayings but with no meaning. It was violent and had so much crazy things shown. It really gave fever-dream that I definitely don't want to experience again. I could understand this movie can be controversial. It's a whole lot of things happening that it's seems like it would be hard for anyone can enjoy this. I really don't see the point of this movie.
I was assigned to watch this movie for a class and honestly it wasn't for me. It's definitely a pretty strange movie. The film is filled with unusual images, bright colors, and deep symbolism. This movie is not really for everyone. It's weird and artistic and kind of difficult to understand. But they all have a deeper meaning behind it. There is a lot of nasty and gross scenes. I prefer more action type movies or like romance movies. So this movie was for sure not something for me. I think there's a very specific audience for these types of movies.
