Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1 Reviews
It’s too early to declare Horizon a success, a disaster, or even a noble failure, though this first instalment makes it clear audiences traveling west with Costner should prepare for a lengthy trek.

Costner is consistently deconstructing the myths of the American West, of manifest destiny and the idea that these people had a claim to anything. He shows us, and them, that this promised land of profit and glory never even existed at all.

To be fair, it is difficult to judge the film since it is only 1/4 of the whole story.

It's an above-average production, but we cannot conclude anything yet, as we have not seen the end. [Full review in Spanish]

Looking for the sweeping scope that personifies the full title’s concept of saga, Costner stumbles along the way as he cross cuts between places and characters, failing to make all connections clear.

Were this a limited television series it would be showered with awards. As a film, and much to my irritation now that I’m hooked in, it very likely is not even going to have an ending.

A super emotive and impassioned movie that's incredibly well-made. [Full review in Spanish]

... it may ultimately be best served as longform 온라인카지노추천, less a film cycle than an epic miniseries charting the westward march of American settlers.

Comes together like a jigsaw puzzle - an epic jigsaw puzzle. Does enough to make me want to see Chapter 2 and Chapter 3.

Costner’s sweeping, imperfect saga is an unapologetic return to the roots and conventions of a classic western.

It is only partially successful as a stand-alone experience, but may very well prove to be a strong foundation for what is to come

While “Horizon” is crammed with visual wonders it has very little feeling beyond the terror of an unpleasant death. Only a couple of times does the script strike a satisfying emotional note.

The raid on the small town at the beginning of the film could be remembered as an impeccable Westen sequence in the years to come. There, Costner builds tension and imagery that his mind has been formulating for decades.

An American Saga? ... Chapter 1? ... It all seems a bit much, and we haven’t even started the film. And then, once we do, it’s soon we realize that, yes, Horizon most certainly is a bit much, and also not enough.

Horizon is big and bold and majestic, with cinematographer J. Michael Muro capturing those expansive Utah vistas and John Debney’s score making sure that the film sounds just like the Westerns that play in the heads of everybody...

A monumental work in terms of what it is telling: the original myth of a country. [Full review in Spanish]

Although there are hints of complex themes within some of these plots, and the actors all give reasonably strong performances as their characters, Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 doesn’t really know what to do with any of them yet.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Aug 5, 2024
Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter One delivers shockingly few substantial wins over its 181-minute runtime.

Costner does a terrific job setting up the beauty & courage of post-Civil War America before unveiling the brutal reality that came with settling an already inhabited nation. Horizon is a remarkable achievement and a reminder of Costner’s enduring legacy.

If Costner, the actor, is rather under-stated and potentially under-used at this point, Costner the director and co-writer does a good job of ensuring the indigenous peoples’ perspective (and language) is included in the narrative mix.
