Peter Canavese Groucho Reviews This early slasher movie and somewhat Psycho rip-off is also an artful and unnerving gothic horror picture in its own right. Dave S Don’t be fooled – The House That Screamed is actually much better than its silly title would lead you to believe. Senora Fourneau runs a boarding school for troubled girls in late 19th century France. When a new student arrives at the academy, she quickly realizes that something is amiss – the headmistress rules with an iron fist, the son of the headmistress is a bit of an oddball, girls periodically go missing, and the vibe around the school is more than a little offsetting. The movie establishes a decidedly creepy atmosphere thanks to excellent sets and costumes, some creative direction and cinematography, and a decent score. Where it falters is the predictable ending (although the motive for the antagonist is a surprise) and the fact that, when you look back at it, you realize that not a lot actually happens over the course of the movie, which is never a good thing.
