Gene Siskel Chicago Tribune Clancy is known for writing difficult books, but the movie makes plausible a preposterous situation because of Baldwin's convincing, low-key approach to being a film hero. AnActor E Tom Clancy’s debut novel, “The Hunt for Red October”, marked the rise of the Techno-thriller genre, combining the rush of new technology with the threat of pending combat. Clancy makes the most of suspense, and like no author before him. Film school teaches that every frame must be a work of art, and that’s definitely the case here: the cinematography is award winning (despite the occasional flimsy, handheld recording), employing dolly shots, dutch angles and low angles for immersion. Close proximity is used to great effect, not only to heighten suspense but to simulate close quarters (remember, this is a submarine movie). The lighting instills a sci-fi sensation, audio is employed to express technology and the scattered soundtrack is epic in nature. While most other novels present conflict as a burden, Clancy elevates his young hero as one eager to begin his journey, rushing to engage on the battlefield; a grand development in modern literature, to say the least. Red October’s largest setback manifests in its hiring of the United Kingdom’s finest actors to portray Russian commanders. These veterans of the industry make no effort to step into character, unwilling or unable to even don an accent! This directorial decision is quite apparent, and fatally wounds the immersion. On the other hand, Baldwin’s performance is simply top notch. His concern with the plot is visible, and his engagement is outstanding. The rest of the cast is amazingly admirable. “The Hunt for Red October” champions the good people on both sides of a conflict: men willing to stand against hatred; men willing to work together for a better tomorrow, and men who would lay down their lives to prevent a catastrophe. This, coupled with its technical features elevate Red October to timeless cinema. Perhaps its most rewarding feature is its message of faith. A lesson in goodwill and faith… in each other. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/22/25 Full Review Garrett B Pacing was slow in the middle but got a little better later on Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/08/25 Full Review Charlie L I love this film. Excellent story and casting, would highly recommend. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/23/25 Full Review Gregory T 25 years later and still spot on. All the legends combine for the ultimate Cold War Classic. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/15/25 Full Review Tyler S I mean, I can see why this is loved, but it really wasn't for me. Was kinda bored the first half, then it picked up later. Was a bit confused at times but I got the idea. It was just kinda there. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/07/25 Full Review Read all reviews
