Hush Reviews
Girl had so many chances to fight back but didn’t…
Very mediocre film, in all respects.
It's got a reasonable run time and is better than average. I can't think of anything else to say.
Absolutely fantastic. Most movies don't capture my attention anymore, this one had me intrigued from the very beginning.
I enjoyed it very much, characters are awesome and plot is interesting, this is tge only home invasion movie that I liked
Very good but Audrey Hepburn and Wait Until Dark did it better.
The story of a woman stalked by a mysterious killer is not exactly a new one. “Hush” refreshes the formula by making the woman both deaf and mute, which adds a layer to her isolation, and allows the writers to set up an agreeable level of tension in several scenes. The film is well constructed and moves along at a reasonable pace. There is very little dialogue in the film, which actually helps it as often these films are ruined by inept dialogue. There is nothing per se wrong with this film - except that the entire film hangs on the apparently impenetrable defence created by shutting a window. This amazing defence is defeated late in the film, but the killer could have shortened the film greatly by smashing a window early on.
BA woman surviving in woods while not being able to hear vs a killer with a crossbow, this movie is a blast to watch.
The mechanics of the movie were very unique in that the protagonist was mute and deaf. The main weakness of this movie was the depth. The antagonist came out of nowhere and nothing about him was explained. He was introduced immediately, zero build up to it. It felt like the movie was relying on immersion from Kate Siegel's character (Maddie) to build suspense. But that just isn't going to cut it since the movie showed too much of what was going on for there ever to be suspense from the audience, and any surprises happened quick and immediately. I hope more directors try to build upon this movie's mechanics without sacrificing important elements (like suspense) like this movie did.
The acting wasn't the worst the direction was okay I guess. But stupid writing. These may be spoilers so be careful. I mean you got this killer who seems to really enjoy sticking his face right up by the window even though he can't see anything but your head. Gee I'm going to see if I can get the stickiest face up by the window again and then I'm going to whack him in the face with something really sharp. Or climb under a bed. Realistically you know how hard it would be to get at somebody under a bed if they have a knife in their hands and not get stabbed. And to pull the mattress off you got to be close enough to the bed that they're going to be able to slash your ankles. Or put your back against the wall sitting in that loft off to the side where he'll have to stick his head up high enough that you can stab him in his face or neck before you can see you. Heck when she got the crossbow from him and he's climbing up the trellis just wait for him to get to the top and bash him with that crossbow. Be pretty hard to hang on to the trellis with one hand and try to block a crossbow with the other. So the realism in this is terrible. Same old plot devices is are used lots of times stupid characters who make stupid decisions.
I've never left a review on RT before, but I'm so impressed by "Hush," I'm leaving one. Genuinely one of the best thriller/suspense/horror movies I've EVER seen (and I'm extremely picky, as I find most these days to be cheesy, ridiculous or rehashed). However, this gem blew me away! I kid you not, my muscles were quite literally tense all over my body throughout the film and I was wide-eyed with palpable dread. Certain scenes left my mouth hanging open or looking away with a cringe of empathetic pain. It's not over-the-top gorey by any means. In fact, I think they walked the line beautifully between a SOLID script/plot, while not relying too heavily on visual shock value. (But trust me, there's some blood.) I often find it hard to focus during movies because I tend to be distracted thinking about the acting, the set design, etc. During this film I was laser-focused with the good kind of tension the entire time. The acting was superb, especially by the female lead. She's stunning to boot (her facial features reminded me quite a bit of Angelina Jolie). Her performance felt so natural that I could completely put myself in her shoes at every moment. I even thought to myself that, as a woman, I'd likely respond to such a horrific situation in emotionally similar ways. She portrayed her character's shock, fear, dread, hopelessness, bravery, and everything else flawlessly. Quite frankly, it was better acting than I often see in mainstream big-budget films. Lastly, I know some people mention that the plot is a bit of a one trick pony, but I beg to differ. The lack of additional simultaneous story lines allows the viewer to hyper-focus to the point you are in that house with her, experiencing everything she's experiencing. Anything additional would have distracted from that solid, intense, one-point theme. I'm just so damn impressed.
Hush is directed by Mike Flanagan and Stars Kate Siegel as Maddie A deaf and mute writer who retreated into the woods to live a solitary life must fight for her life in silence when a masked killer appears at her window. Home invasion movies can be a big hit or miss but what Mike Flanagan is able to pull off with Hush is unique and changes the pace of home invasion movies. Having the main character be Deaf and Mute throws such an interesting twist and challenge of being at a disadvantage and how the killer can take advantage of that and how Maddie has to overcome her disability to survive and I thought they played it perfectly. Another positive is both the Killer and Maddie are smart and don’t fall in to the classic horror clichés of making dumb choices just for the plot they both are calculated and think things out instead of rushing and just seeing what happens. Kate Siegel truly shines in this role and John Gallagher Jr is great as the killer and brings different elements to the role instead of playing the straight forward home invasion killer role. Mike Flanagan is able to create a creepy atmosphere and suspense without cheap jump scares along with a great script in particular a scene that involves a boyfriend and the killer which I think was written and played out perfectly. At the end of the day it’s a straight forward concept elevated by 2 phenomenal leads and great direction from Mike Flanagan. Definitely worth the watch.

Phenomenal, suspenseful, thrilling. A fantastic ride that has you rooting for the protagonist and wanting to see the killer get what's coming.
Good but not new idea buried behind dumb realisation and moron characters
Absolute nonsense. All the killer had to do was break one of the 50 windows... Instead he moves around tapping them like a toddler just to extend this into 80 minutes of an inept poor man's Home Alone. How it got the reviews it did makes a mockery out of RottenTomatoes scores.
Really effective and engaging, though the suspense drops a bit once the intruder takes off their mask.
If you love 2007 The Strangers y'all gonna love HUSH is very very terrifying intense home invasion thriller for a 82 minute film short and it didn't lacks the film and the pacing is really well made and Mike did really fantastic first time directing and really terrific cast and cinematography.
