Hysteria Reviews
3.25 stars. Doubt that this is based on truth, but for a rom com it was good. Especially considering I usually don't care for them.
Entertaining but lacking in reality.
Charlotte's line is very feminist. The invention of the vibrator not only promoted the feminist movement but also benefited women, a win-win situation. The movie-watching experience can only be said to be a light comedy, but there is no climax.
It's funny as fuck! Yes, yes the female struggle. Once in a while one ought to be allowed to turn its brain off and have a marry old laugh at histories expense.
Highly entertaining and tongue in cheek humor. Do not watch if you take life too seriously. Otherwise some red Wine, good company, cheese .... & chocolate. Sit back and enjoy.
I consider this movie a repetitive and boring movie, it does make a mockery of a few things in the future but that's it. Its one of those movies you start viewing for 5 minutes and you can already tell the end. So for this being one boring film that did not caught my attention, I give " Hysteria " an F-.
An interesting point on our psychological history, which is put together in a very clever and tasteful way. I laughed my way all the way through.
Watch this if: You like unexpected backstories, cheeky humor, and women's rights. As unlikely as it may sound, the history of the vibrator is only a footnote in Hysteria, a film which champions the growing social change of the Victorian age. This witty comedy is full of conviction and its characters will easily charm their way into your heart with their awkward admissions and admirable courage. While the film isn't strictly historically accurate, it tells a pretty darn good story that you'll want to watch all over again.
Adorable. Funny. Charming. Loved it.
DO NOT WATCH THIS MOVIE! Unless you want to be thoroughly entertained!!! Hysteria is a delightful treatment of a very "touchy" subject, told as only the British could do. I don't understand the mediocre ratings because in my opinion it is one of the best "tongue-in-cheek" romantic comedies (accent on the comedy) I've ever seen.
These ratings are ridonkulous. This movie is lavishly quirky, yet supposedly true, and then beautifully realized, that it becomes delightful to watch, and cut to the perfect length with some terrific performances. One crits Review is right-on: "A lighthearted romp" through, yes, history. Have a laugh & a smile at female foibles, aided by their docs, through the Victorian age - and before & after - and the medical "arts." Take your favorite girlfriend or wife. | ~ Norm de Guerre
This might genuinely be the worst, most cliched film ever. Dreadful acting, non stop predictable lines - a complete waste of time. Left with the overwhelming desire to punch each cast member in the face. Proposal on Christmas Eve, as she's let out of prison and he gives her the rights to the settlement. FUCK RIGHT OFF whichever douchebag wrote this utter piece of shite.
Good acting but the bizarre nature of the story leaves a lot to be desired about a doctor who has a breakthrough in pleasuring women by creating a sexual device

There is something inappropriate about a lame comedic love story set within the context of 19th Century misguided and misogynistic diagnosis of female hysteria. The movie's defiant refusal to actually take a more serious examination of a very complex moment in psychiatric and female history is the most provocative aspect to be found here. All the more disappointing that this predictable "rom-com" tossed in a time machine was made by a woman.
