Critics Consensus

Incident in a Ghost Land may satisfy horror fans in search of a nasty kick, but it's narratively flawed and decidedly not for the squeamish.

Simon Abrams Village Voice An effectively punishing critique of the relentless misogyny that has become a staple of every stupid Texas Chain Saw Massacre knockoff that pits sexually active women against emotionally disturbed serial killers. Jun 22, 2018 Full Review Dennis Harvey Variety Laugnier meticulously showcases sadism while seeming comparatively indifferent to matters of basic storytelling logic and suspense. Jun 22, 2018 Full Review Kimber Myers Los Angeles Times Transphobia and misogyny flow through the film as much as blood, staining what might have been a solid genre effort. Jun 21, 2018 Full Review Paul Farrell Vague Visages ...it is not the gross-out factor that turns me off from Laugier’s second attempt at martyrdom, it is the casual virulence towards his characters... Dec 13, 2023 Full Review Trace Thurman Horror Queers Podcast Laugier makes many questionable choices regarding the film's villains, but those issues aside he has still managed to craft a bleak, visceral and deeply upsetting horror film. Rated: 3.5/5 May 31, 2022 Full Review Joe Lipsett Horror Queers Podcast While Laugier delivers a fantastically tense home invasion thriller, the politics - from the misogyny, to the transphobic villain, to the reverence for H.P. Lovecraft - make his creative decisions virtually unforgivable. Rated: 3.5/5 May 28, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews

Orisel A One of the best movies I've seen in a long time. I love how it plays with your mind, keeping you guessing about whether Beth is truly safe and if her sister is genuinely unstable. However, I should note that this movie contains sexual and physical abuse, which may be triggering for some viewers. The setting is another highlight; it's dark and not overly colorful, which enhances the overall atmosphere. I highly recommend this movie to anyone looking for an incredibly engaging watch. I do wish there had been more background on how the 'villains' met and what turned them into their porcelain-doll-like personas, but overall, it's an amazing film—literally one of the best out there. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/09/25 Full Review Adam H This movie likely went over some people's heads. It's not like most modern films that tell to every little detail through exposition, and I think that has contributed to why it is so underrated. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/07/25 Full Review Will H Just got through watching and it was really good. Some twists and turns, disturbing elements, but overall a good 91 minute psychological horror film. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/22/25 Full Review Alex D Finally a goof horror movie, don't listen to the bad reviews from people with bad taste..
