Critics Consensus

It may be too "dark" for some, but Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom remains an ingenious adventure spectacle that showcases one of Hollywood's finest filmmaking teams in vintage form.

James Jackson Times (UK) As souped-up matinee fare this has heaps of bugs, humour and chases, topped by Harrison Ford at his charismatic peak. Jun 27, 2023 Full Review Pauline Kael The New Yorker Steven Spielberg creates an atmosphere of happy disbelief: the more breathtaking and exhilarating the stunts are the funnier they are. Nobody has ever fused thrills and laughter in quite the way that he does here. Apr 18, 2023 Full Review Neil Jillett The Age (Australia) There is not much plot, but for two hours the supersonic action rarely lets up. As a result, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom is even more deliriously funny than its predecessor, Raiders of the Lost Ark. Apr 18, 2023 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy Easily the most underrated film in the franchise, with its dark tone working perfectly in the context of its often macabre tale. Rated: 3.5/4 Jul 7, 2023 Full Review Sebastian Zavala Kahn Me gusta el cine Spielberg directs this movie like there's no tomorrow, and Ford is perfect as always, but in hindsight, "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" doesn't come close to being as satisfying as the first or third installments. Full review in Spanish. Rated: 3.5/5 Jun 28, 2023 Full Review Andrew Kopkind The Nation Such attitudes place the movie’s emotional center of gravity at about age 11, which suggests that the filmmakers have lost one year of maturity every summer since 1981. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/18/24 Full Review Sara Brought me back to my childhood with a cool movie theater!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/28/22 Full Review Rob Y Good adventure movie Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/26/22 Full Review Ricardo Gil P Imagination, mysticism, humor. This is already an Indiana Jones. The rituals, the characterization of the characters, the cult. The characterization of India, beliefs, the Maharaja and his palace. The introduction of Short Round, a boy “adopted” by Indiana Jones. The ceremony of the Thuggee cult inherent to Kali, the hypnotization through the blood of Kali. The voodoo??? It was kind of confusing. 😵‍💫 How the hell does little Maharajah own an Indiana Jones voodoo doll? This was the only detail I found unnecessary. The characterization and myth of Mola Ram who can rip out and set hearts on fire with his bare hands. It's a film that keeps you hooked from beginning to end. What I liked the most is when he is sent by God (according to the belief of the village chiefs) to save the children and retrieve the sacred stone and then comes across the rituals when he sees the skeleton in the forest studded with skulls scaring its transporters. The film takes the viewer into a ritualistic, occult setting and suddenly the Prime Minister enters and this environment is broken and we enter the common field. But the common field is a facade because in the singer's room there is a secret passage that will lead you to the sacred cult. I enjoyed this game of immersion, non-immersion, and immersion again. This is without a doubt the first great Indiana Jones, and perhaps one of the best. Grand finale, by the way! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/11/25 Full Review Read all reviews
