Intimate Strangers Reviews

In what is essentially a two-hander you have to expect a little more combustion between the leads, but I never really bought the complicity between them to begin with, so the pay-off seemed preposterous.

pleasant, compelling, worth a look

| Original Score: 3/4 | Aug 16, 2010

Director Patrice Leconte subtly infuses the movie with humor and psychological depth.

| Original Score: 3.5/4 | Nov 1, 2006

[Leconte is] among the best today at turning out films in the classic French mode.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Mar 7, 2005

It doesn't quite ring true, but it is absorbing, nonetheless.

| Original Score: C+ | Feb 6, 2005

One day we're going to look back and wonder how we never quite noticed how very good Patrice Leconte is.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Jan 12, 2005

... full of meaningful moments, aesthetic pleasures, and the joy that comes from the close study of a character's expressions, confessions, and silences.

A mysterious love story takes chances and mostly succeeds.

Full Review | Dec 27, 2004

One of the most unusual screen romances of 2004.

Full Review | Original Score: 3/4 | Dec 17, 2004

The performances...make it worth soldiering past many obvious doubts (how hard is it to say, "You're in the wrong office"?) to find out what happens.

| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Dec 3, 2004

| Original Score: 3/4 | Oct 6, 2004

A brilliant entertainment, highlighted by Luchini's almost constantly perplexed expression...a subtle tale of personal relationships.

| Original Score: 8/10 | Sep 20, 2004

Though it keeps raising the stakes, it never actually allows anything to happen. It is intent on remaining a talky drama.

| Original Score: C+ | Sep 18, 2004

A movie of conversations and asides, the treasures to be found in the intangible asides and gestures that add depth to the surface words.

| Original Score: 3/4 | Sep 8, 2004

Like its seductive protagonist, Intimate Strangers is a masterful tease.

Full Review | Original Score: 4/5 | Sep 8, 2004

More like a voyeuristic fantasy that overstayed its welcome than a real romance.

| Original Score: B- | Sep 5, 2004

Can you have a Hitchcockian thriller without a body, or even a crime? Yes, and cleverly so.

| Original Score: 3.5/4 | Sep 3, 2004

... there's an air of mystery that hangs lightly in the atmosphere, never overtaking the unusual intimacy that develops between our protagonists.
