Critics Consensus

It isn't quite the breath of fresh air that Iron Man was, but this sequel comes close with solid performances and an action-packed plot.

Deborah Ross The Spectator If there were any new ideas, I failed to spot them, as did my bone marrow, which slept through most of it anyhow. Aug 30, 2018 Full Review Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online I don't think the story was nearly as strong as that of The Dark Knight, but it sure was entertaining and surprisingly funny... and sets up The Avengers quite nicely. Rated: B+ Sep 11, 2017 Full Review Nick Pinkerton Village Voice As for the actual grand finale, Downey Jr. and Cheadle seem like they're already network gaming the PS3 release instead of facing any actual threat, and Rourke goes out like a chump. Apr 15, 2013 Full Review Cory Woodroof For the Win (USA Today) It’s a good film; flawed, sure, but we’ve missed this kind of effectively contained storytelling in these movies. Feb 27, 2024 Full Review Anushka Halve Film Companion This corridor fight sequence perfectly encapsulates the character's lethal efficiency, and adds a touch of flair to an already fantastic scene... Dec 11, 2023 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review The most extraordinary aspect of Iron Man 2 is how it brings together the film’s seemingly unending string of subplots, tightly confined inside a mere 2-hour runtime, and makes the process feel effortless. Louis B Great movie, but the story couldve been a bit better. Its like oh, the first movie was a hit, make another one but make a slightly more interesting villain! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/08/25 Full Review Audience Member Even 15 years later it doesn't deserve all the hate Yes the director admitted it was a bit rough having the studio come having their own input making creative choices and having it come off suffering from sequelitis This still made a killing at the box office ending up being one of my favorite movies of 2010! Totally kicked the crap out of the first movie Director Jon Favereau returns along with much of the original cast along with newcomers Mickey Rourke, Sam Rockwell, Don Cheadle, and Scarlett Johansson Picking up 6 months after the original Tony Stark has officially announced himself as Iron Man sending a ripple effect particularly the American government as far as weapons and technology He’s privatized world peace and this film touches upon unilateralism, he wants to in a way make the world his playground while also creating a legacy fending off the political angle It’s his life of a celebrity as a superhero His buddy Colonel James Rhodes also advocates to stop the Pentagon from taking away Tony’s tech but also preventing it from falling into the wrong hands Unfortunately Tony is dying from palladium poisoning; the more he uses the suit the more it’s killing him so he struggles to find a suitable replacement A man named Ivan Vanko plans to use the arc reactor technology to strike back at Tony, Ivan’s father is tied to Tony’s father, Howard and there’s a lot of bad blood from their history Ivan wants revenge for what Howard did In response Tony gives the keys of the company to Pepper Potts for her to juggle the responsibility Plus he’s also coming to terms with how his father raised him Rival industrialist Justin Hammer also wants to make Tony obsolete so in secret he enacts the help of Ivan who becomes Whiplash to tear down Tony from his pedestal This is also the introduction of Black Widow who works for Nick Fury of SHIELD secretly assisting Tony Escalation is inevitable as other countries try to replicate the Iron Man technology Can Tony balance everything on the verge of losing his stance as this famous hero? If you can make God bleed people will cease to believe in him, there will be blood in the water and the sharks will come when the world consumes you, we forget all the lives a family has destroyed among all the fame and success, we try to rewrite our own histories, a fathers greatest creation will always be their child, we are limited by the technology of our time, is it better to have humans in control or rely on unmanned machinery to protect us? Again this isn’t a bad movie as most claim it to be; So many laughs and exciting action sequences I didnt hate Tony Stark in this movie, he's just struggling with the fact he may die from the paladium poisoning and he's dealing with it the best he knows how whether drinking or making impulsive decisions having a reckless streak becoming self destructive He’s also the kind of man who doesn’t agonize over his gifts he gets a kick out of them When does the man begin, when does the Iron Man begin when facing mortality? Howard Stark from old film archival footage has that Howard Hughes/Walt Disney thing going on There are themes of fathers, sons, legacies as well as the price of celebrity next to imperfect humanity growing inside the metal Says a lot about the use of technology for destructive purposes I like Sam Rockwell but I felt he wasn’t in control as much as Justin Hammer The chemistry of Downey and Paltrow still works with the quips and the snappy one liners Don Cheadle's perfect casting for War Machine, Mickey Rourke is a fun villain as a physicist as well as a former inmate, and I didn't feel that Black Widow was shoehorned in It was just a glimpse of bigger things to come in this cinematic universe down the line And the last 30 min of this movie is freaking awesome! This is still a fun summer popcorn flick despite some flaws Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 05/08/25 Full Review Kobi A This movie is actually pretty solid for a first hour, but after Tony Stark pees in his suit the movie enters a downward spiral that it never recovers from. Still, if this is the weakest MCU movie, we could be doing a lot worse. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 05/07/25 Full Review Rubí Q I loved the dynamic between Pepper and Tony.I didn't like the introduction of the black widow. What doesn't make it as good as the first one is that it has a very boring villain and he's not very different from the villain in the first movie. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/02/25 Full Review Nerd W An Easy Watch For Sure Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/21/25 Full Review Ian H Stark is so unlikable it's hard to get past Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/20/25 Full Review Read all reviews
