Jagged Edge Reviews

Jan 10, 2025

Joe Eszterhas wrote this courtroom thriller, and Richard Marquand directed it. Starring Jeff Bridges, Glenn Close, and others. The film is about Teddy (Glenn Close), a lawyer and divorced mother with a young daughter and son. Jack (Jeff Bridges), a newspaper editor, is suspected of murdering his wife, an affluent socialite, in order to acquire her immense wealth and business. The film is suspenseful and thrilling. All of the actors and actresses had good performances.

Amazing and incredible thriller, must see !!!

A very entertaining crime drama with Glen Close falling in love with the person she is suppose to be defending who is potentially a murderer in Jeff Bridges.

I’m not sure what’s up with the low ratings, but I personally love this old school murder mystery! Glenn Close is wonderful in it, so is Jeff Bridges.

Great cast but horribly acted or overacted. Weak storyline and predictable. Was actually hoping for one more twist just to make it a little interesting. Would be a bad made for tv movie.

Slick but predictable court room thriller; excellent set up; excellent performances and production values; but the ending BADLY needed one more shock twist. It was too obvious, too Occam's Razor. Still watchable and entertaining for most of the film's duration. Recommended.

I knew it was him (Fredo), was hoping for a twist to prove me wrong. Nope, it was him. Je savais que c'était lui, j'espérais un rebondissement pour me prouver que j'avais tort. Mais non, c'était bien lui.

It was worth a second viewing as I'd seen it decades ago. It a has good acting and storyline. It's worth the watch.

More of a slightly jagged edge of a smooth butter knife. Jagged edge is a court thriller about the acts of a horrific crime being taken to court and we also have a lawyer love story too which is what a 80's genre like this is not complete without. The twist and acting is what really adds coal to the steam here as the last one mentioned has Primal Fear running for it's money. But really, the film is really lacking that tension that's needed for a court film and I think if it was made in the years we have Anatomy Of A Fall it would be expertly crafted. The film is really cringe in some places but this was due to a 80's backdrop so can't really complain there. The twist is quite decent but I predicted it unfortunately and the impact from the end really did not leave that payoff. Overall after the dust settles Jagged edge is very ingenuitive in terms of the two aspects above. But without those boosts it is a court thriller that is worst at worst. Grade: C+

Close takes up Bridge's criminal defense case where he's accused of murdering his wife. After he beds her, things get a little tricky on who is actually the bad guy. It's 90s drama at its best.

I'm a sucker for a Joe Eszterhas script. Frequent collaborator with Paul Verhoeven, Eszterhas is a master of thrashing out erotic thriller screenplays, and Verhoeven has probably directed his best work. Basic Instinct (1992) preceded the commercial and critical flop Showgirls (1995) that may or may not be my favourite Eszterhas film. This precedes both of them, directed by Richard Marquand and starring the always watchable Jeff Bridges and Glenn Close. The film opens with the murder of Bridges wife, and he is subsequently accused of the crime. Enter Glenn Close, who chooses to represent Bridges in court. If this sounds familiar, that's because it's a heavy influence on Basic Instinct, which could be called a more popular older sibling of Jagged Edge. Whereas the former is without doubt a savagely erotic thriller, Jagged Edge removes the titillation in favour of what ends up being a courtroom drama. Jagged Edge is good fun, with solid performances, but it lacks the outrageousness of Basic Instinct, and although that film is flawed, it did throw everything at the wall for better or for worse, and Jagged Edge perhaps could have done with a bit of that.

Glenn Close and Jeff Bridges. A killer is on the loose and the authorities suspect Bridges' character John Forrester is the culprit. The fact he cheated on his wife looks motive enough. But it looks like he has access to all of the finances too. Close plays Teddy Barnes and as his attorney she needs all the facts before considering if he's innocent or not. She hasn't practiced criminal law for 4 years so this will be quite the case for her to take. But it may be too deep as she feels as if her chain is being pulled by Forrester. The title definitely refers to the weapon used in the murders but also the way the truth might be twisted in this trial. The whole movie is a giant court case which might not work for everyone. But Close and Bridges have great chemistry. Sure not all the reveals make total sense but for those interested in a slow burning potboiler this will do the trick.

Works well enough because of its stars.

The best thrilling courtroom movie ever made!

There's really not much edge here, as the big twist is rather predictable, and characters all too wholesomely likeable. Still, it's easy to watch and keeps you entertained, if not quite on the edge of your seat.

Pretty pretty pretty unimpressive.
