Sandra Hall Sydney Morning Herald It's a classic tale well told. Rated: 4/5 Mar 15, 2017 Full Review Jake Wilson The Age (Australia) It's hard to say if there is a centre to a narrative that jumps from one subplot to another in the manner of a soap opera. Rated: 2/5 Mar 3, 2017 Full Review Richard Kuipers Variety Centered on a 14-year-old boy caught up in a murder mystery involving a part-Aboriginal suspect, this outstanding adaptation of Craig Silvey's novel will appeal strongly to teenage and adult audiences. Mar 2, 2017 Full Review Joe Lipsett Hazel & Katniss & Harry & Starr Podcast The film is unable to delve into the characters like Silvey's source material, but the performances, particularly Miller, are charming. One wishes Collette's Ruth had retained the novel's complexity, however, since here she doesn't make much sense Rated: 3.5/5 Feb 21, 2023 Full Review Jason Best What's On 온라인카지노추천 [A] terrifically engaging coming-of-age drama cum mystery thriller. Rated: 4/5 Dec 20, 2020 Full Review Rachael Mead Square Eyes This is a classic Australian story told with both depth and charm, and I have no doubt that the brilliant young actors will soon become household names. John E I did not watch this movie until I had read the book. The movie is a different story with no character development that occurs in the novel. I am bitterly disappointed by whatever miscreant decided to rewrite the story. So what's different? Charlie's friendship with Jeffrey is a MAJOR part of the novel. To use his terms regarding the scriptwriter - "You're an idiot!" Charlie's mom wasn't screwing the cop - Charlie didn't know who the man was. Eliza led Charlie to Jasper's wood at the end and was with Charlie when he caught his mother with her lover. Eliza confessed what she knew before Charlie said anything. Jasper turned up a few minutes later. The letter was never torn up. Charlie's mom never said goodbye to him when she left and Charlie didn't care. So other than telling a different story from the one you were expecting, I thought the actors did a good job. It could have been so much better if the film world didn't have to tie up everything in forgiveness and embraces. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/06/25 Full Review Ava B The movie was NOTHING like the original novel. With the great cast it has, it's sad to see the talents go to waste on the poorly written script. The movie jumps to different plot points randomly and out of order making it hard to understand at times, and it didn't help that the characters were changed so much that they would be unrecognisable if it weren't for their names. If you haven't read the book then you might enjoy this movie. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/04/23 Full Review wayne m The story is all over the place and covers nothing interesting. I care about none of its shallow characters with their soap opera dialogue and the scenes go way too long. There's an interesting story in there somewhere, but this movie misses it. It's full of lot's of little events, revealed "secrets" that only add up to a desire to fast-forward. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Too Many Stories Being Divulged Upon All At Once. The One Main Theme Pertaining To Anything Of Meaning Is That Distrust Of What We Ourselves Don't Connect With Or Understand. One's Race & Culture Being A Driver Of These Distrustful Thoughts. At Least There Is A Transition For Closure At The End Of The Story, As Some Loose Ends Are All Tied Up Rather Quickly, How Well This Works Is Up To Whom Is Watching, Some Will Forgive The Quick Haphazard Finish, Because They Enjoyed One Part Or Another.. Or A Particular Character They Connected With. I Didn't Get All That Much Out Of It. But It Was There Was Some Nice Australian Scenery. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Audience Member I enjoyed the book, but the film has lost all the humour and heart. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review Audience Member After reading the novel I was so excited to watch the screenplay. However, I would like to apologise to Craig Silvey on behalf of this abomination of his work. Not even Hugo Weaving and Toni Collette could save this incoherent, awkward, half baked soap opera which misses any important emotional depth, structure or themes from the source material. What a waste of 5 million dollars and a world class cast. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/23/23 Full Review Read all reviews
