John Mulaney: Baby J Reviews
It's not very apologetic for a special about recovering from drug abuse. At the very least, it's very funny—which always matters most in a comedy special—and the subject matter undeniably lends itself well to the format.
We all are rooting for Mulaney for some reason (his hair? his suits? his "vulnerability?"), but this special is not special. Unoriginal, not funny; I predicted 80% of every punchline.
John Mulaney: Baby J is a hilarious and refreshing comedy special that showcases the comedic genius of John Mulaney. The special follows Mulaney's return to the stage after a tumultuous couple of years, which saw him go through his drug addiction, an intervention and his stay in rehab. Mulaney's sharp wit and impeccable timing are on full display as he delves into a range of topics, from his time in rehab to his experiences as a new father. His ability to find humor in even the most difficult situations is truly remarkable, and it's clear that he's in top form throughout the special. One of the standout moments of the special comes when Mulaney delves into his struggles with addiction, which he addresses with a candid and unflinching approach that is both poignant and hilarious. He is able to balance the gravity of the situation with his signature wit and humor, making for a truly memorable and impactful performance. John Mulaney: Baby J is a must-watch for anyone who appreciates smart, sharp, and side-splittingly funny comedy. Mulaney's return to the stage is nothing short of triumphant, and he proves once again why he's one of the most talented and beloved comedians of his generation.
I could listen to this man for many more hours.
Maybe the best comedy special of the year. Mulaney is masterful in dealing with the large white coked up elephant in the room. His tone may be darker, but the story telling is on point and his words ring authentic. Absolute must watch!
Until this show, I believed John Mullaney to be one of the most insightful stand up comedians of his generation. Almost two hours of whining about his intervention and stint in rehab. I didn't laugh once. I hope he gets his edge back while maintaining his sobriety.
I'm a longtime fan, so very bias but I enjoyed lots.
Mulaney comes not only at the top of his game, but comes with an honest and open depiction of his addiction. This was extremely funny, with almost every bit hitting hilariously.
He pulled it off, but it felt a little bit like turning his run in with rehab into content was a prerequisite for staying in the game.
I am a historical fan of John M., but this routine which mostly makes fun of his addiction recovery process is less wide ranging than other efforts and not quite as good. Don't regret watching it but I had higher hopes.
Yessss...this is great! the part, he talked about intervention was hilarious. I think I like him. Isnt he more handsome than 5 years ago?
I applaud John for returning to stand up after his issues over the past few years. However, this special just wasn't that funny to me. I understand this is a darker comedy style and it does not reflect his past work. It just didn't work as far as I was concerned.
This was really disappointing. It became completely repetitive with no actual substance or jokes. Just a really funny person talking about the same thing for almost 90 minutes.
Rating: 6/10. 60/100
John Mulaney tells stories of his time recovering from being in rehab and a general update on his life told in a way for great comedic timing and hilarious in the first couple of minutes or some of the hardest, I've left in a long time. Congratulations, John Mulaney. Definitely not for everyone but I loved it 8/10
Absolutely terrible. Not once did I laugh and apparently neither did the crowd. If you look closely, nobody is actually clapping or laughing. It's all Inserted laughs. I'd be embarrassed to say he was the father of my child. Don't waste your time. It's just him making fun of his drug addiction except it never gets funny.
Most of John's jokes revolve around stories that have some truth to them but seem to be exaggerated. I say seem because you can never tell what a comedian tells us truth or fiction. Often, you or I don't care. We want the laugh, hence the comedy genre. I don't think John lied at the beginning of the show, he wants attention. Having been to rehab a few times I'm sure that's influenced my opinion of the show—I didn't like "Silver Linings Playbook" either. But I think there's something too that. I think Robin Williams, DeStefano, or Belushi died chasing the love of the crowd, and if you asked them, probably wouldn't trade it for anything. Making light of it or, in this case, making it an hour and a half set, doesn't or didn't seem to pay off. The crowd agreed. Mulaney's funniest bit comes as the finale when he reads bits of a GQ interview he doesn't remember giving. Call me cold hearted, but I'd rather take the old John coked out chasing attention and fame any day, at least that guy was funny. I'm glad he's clean. The world will be better off with him around. Hopefully this set is just growing pains.
Very charming and funny.
I'm a fan of his. I have been for a while. I can confidently say this is his worst special. I don't actually know what on earth the justifications for the high reviews are. I'm glad he fixed his problem. Truly, drug addiction is absolutely crippling, and I'm glad he made it out of the other side. Furthermore, it's nice to see that he will talk about it on stage. However, there were no jokes in the special. The whole time I watched it I kept waiting for a joke to pay off the set up. 80 minutes later, no jokes. I don't hate the guy. I'm truly a fan of his comedy, and I intend to watch his next special. However, this was certainly a bad showing for him.
I am a decent fan of Mulaney but this one was a bit too focused on the rehab. Very bold to get on stage and talk about things of this nature but for a solid show, it falls a bit flat.
