Jumping the Broom Reviews
The narrative in the background for this film, just as the film itself, most certainly demands close attention. Many will be uncomfortable to have to admit the reality of what that narrative seeks to reveal, and so will turn away. For those who choose to pay attention, the effort proves to be well worth it.
Tasha is so funny in every movie she's in that woman is like a force of nature stunning as well
OK, let me just start off by saying I had a really high hopes for this movie. I started watching the movie and within the first five minutes I felt like it was moving way too quickly. Prepare for that to be a theme throughout the entire movie, it moves way too quickly. There's not enough development between characters so you don't really dislike or like anybody strongly enough to understand their words or their opinions. The reason I had high hopes is because you don't see often enough black actors in the entirety of the film, meaning you don't see enough black actors in the entire film as the main cast. On average they just play the side character, the best friend or the comic relief. In this one I was hoping for a good storyline that is often portrayed in romance comedies where white actors are the main theme. It's not that the story was bad it was just that they focused on such minuscule things versus things they could've used to create a bigger plot point, more drama. Her parents not being her parents and her aunt being her mom could've been a huge plot point. But they decided to focus on the future husband‘s mom as a large issue when she could've just been a small issue throughout the film and still revealed the secret. All the small things they decided to focus on takes away from that huge reveal. I feel no sympathy towards the main female because throughout the film she seems to push back for no reason as well as the mother in law seems to push back for no reason. All in all, I would not watch the movie again but it was not unwatchable. The writing and direction of the film needs to improve but the actors were good.
I liked this movie. I grew up in Brooklyn, married my wife after 4 months, we were different religions and both mothers said hurtful things to us. So I had a lot in common with this movie. It does have a lot of characters, too many to develop fully, but it was like a real wedding, lots of people you barely know. It's a comedy, not a documentary.
It was a lighthearted way at looking at complex family dynamics, the division of wealth and class, upward mobility in the black community and its damaging effects on relationships, and colorist. Those that gave this movie poor reviews do not and cannot comprehend the emotional complexity of the black American experience
I was surprised how well written the characters were. But the story seemed to pop up one more issue at a time just so the other characters had something to do or say. But it was a clean movie with little innuendo or language, and that is refreshing.
Despite being a badly structured and messy film, Jumping the Broom is very funny
This movie had a lot of potential but it did not live up to its potential. The cast had a lot of chemistry but there were to many characters to develop this right. I never felt like I got to know any of them truly. Jessica the main characters story seemed all over the place and the resolution of the end seemed rushed. I think it would have been better if the focused more on the relationship between the mothers and their kids. The side characters did not need to have there stories told because they all ended flat. Also I would have like the tradition of the jumping of the broom established more. Itâ(TM)s worth a watch if youâ(TM)re bored and nothing else is on but overall it did not live up to the expectations I had for it.
This movie is a production of that Buybull-thumping blowhard T.D. Jakes. That should be all you need to know.
I feel like story wise this had elements to do interesting things, but it didn't flesh any of them out and just threw them all together with absolutely no character development or transition and instead of really doing anything it had the potential to they spent a great deal of time reminding everyone they were black, which wasn't really a point in the movie. it wasn't about racial issues or embracing heritage, just a lot of "I'm blacker than you, you're not black enough, you're too black, let's throw this random insult out at this girl for having dark skin and then only have exclusively light skinned people at our wedding." I can't help but feel that racial equality would be better served by not pretending that every second of a person's life revolves around what race they are when there's absolutely no deeper message or meaning involved in it.
Nothing too special. A few laughs here and there
I liked this movie. It shows how different people want different things to make life better for them and their loved ones.
This was pretty funny! I've always liked Mike Epps, and his character helped take the edge off of some of the dramatic moments in the movie. I thought it was well done, and pretty funny.
(6/10) Jumping the Broom is a better than expected ensemble comedy about family rivalries, tradition and marriage. The thing that elevates this above most ensemble comedies is the cast; it looks like they're having fun and they're full of charisma. The weakest thing about the movie is easily the story. The story is so cliche'd and predictable that it almost flounders the entire movie. I don't remember that much about the movie (it's been 2 years) but I do remember liking it a lot more than I like most ensemble comedies (I HATE ensemble comedies for the most part). This movie is also nowhere near as painful to watch as any of Tyler Perry's movies. The big reason why I hate ensemble comedies is that they never seem to get the right mix of drama and comedy. Jumping the Broom seems to mix these elements better than most even though it's still not perfect. This movie actually had a lot more drama than I was expecting, which is certainly not a bad thing. Overall, I recommend Jumping the Broom to any fan of this genre because they will probably love it. The film is filled with fine performances, enjoyable characters and a solid mix of drama and comedy (even though the comedy isn't that funny). If you can look past the story that we've seen a billion times before, you can probably enjoy this movie.
