Jan 7, 2025

Maybe not the most believable, but it is awesome.

Jet li's best English speaking film, by far!! The action is very intense, with some great fight scenes!

Jet Li’s best English language film, which was actually a French production, is a lot better than I remember. My main takeaways from this rewatch were that one, the fight scenes are just as good as Li and Corey Yuen’s Hong Kong output, and, two, I really miss seeing Bridget Fonda in stuff. Below is my review from the last time I watched.  Kiss of the Dragon (2001) **** This film was released to pretty dreadful reviews, but I always felt it was Jet Li’s best English-language film. “Romeo is Bleeding” is also quite good, but Li has a story credit on this one and the script was written by Luc Besson and Robert Mark Kamen, the schlocky team behind enjoyably cartoony action films like the Transporter and Taken franchises. Both of those series are entertaining semi-serious action/revenge nonsense, and that is pretty much what “Kiss of the Dragon” is as well. Li plays a Chinese police officer going to Paris to arrest a Chinese drug lord but finds himself framed by dirty French cops. Li goes on the run, but with help from prostitute Bridget Fonda, to crack the drug ring. The story isn’t all that great, like most Besson pictures (“Leon” being the main exception), but the action is terrific (Li’s regular collaborator Corey Yuen was the martial arts choreographer on this film). Besides Li being an amazing martial artist, which is the main reason to watch this film, Fonda is quite good in what is her second to last theatrical film performance before retiring from acting. This movie made me miss her. Fonda was never Meryl Steep, but she was always very likable and genuine in her films, whether it was a silly action flick like “Point of No Return,” a rom-com like “It  Could Happen to You,” or an indie like “Scandal,” she was always good. Besides Fonda, you also have the reliably good Ric Young as the slimy drug lord and Burt “Cato from The Pink Panther” Kwouk in a small role. As with most Besson productions, this is slickly made if empty-headed entertainment, but Li (with aid from Corey Yuen) and a good performance by Fonda, manage to elevate this above Besson’s usual output.

jetley is a great actor

Jetley's movie is really interesting. Although it is about a mysterious police case, it is a movie that can tell a little about the life of Asian people. It was a really interesting movie that attracted people's attention

I am very happy that the movie shows us the steps and choices that are necessary in the life of a great person. I like the movie.

This first run-in between Jet Li and producer/co-writer Luc Besson is no "Unleashed." "Kiss Of The Dragon" might have a couple of entertaining action sequences sprinkled throughout, but it's wholly unoriginal and not particularly well-executed from a screenwriting standpoint either. The dialogue in this is just weak sauce, man, and try as hard as the actors might, this stuff just doesn't sound good coming out of their mouths. There's also some questionable stylistic choices here and there — head-scratchingly awkward framing choices and some of the worst needle drops you've ever seen/heard. I don't know, man, I get that this isn't supposed to be high art or anything, but at least "Unleashed" had an atypical kind of conceit for a martial arts picture. This just feels like something anyone could've thrown together in CeltX over a weekend. Not very impressed.

Thoroughly enjoyed this hi-octane martial arts actioner. Some great set pieces, fight choreography and unusually good acting for the genre. One of the best examples of an action movie done to near perfection.

A simple, unpretentious, fun action movie that might not be exactly filled to the brim with three-dimensional characters and compelling arcs but remains entertaining thanks to Jet Li's amazing martial arts skills, some genuinely funny moments which show that, while relatively darker than Jackie Chan films, the movie knows not to take itself too seriously and a decent dramatic performance from Bridget Fonda as well as the villain gloriously hamming it up in his determination to keep his evilness under wraps. To cut a long story short, Kiss of the Dragon is filled with great stuntwork, with barely any CGI shenanigans, and a good enough, if rather by-the-numbers, set-up to have Jet Li kick some ass. I can see why Luc Besson and Cory Yuen would shortly after make another collaboration with The Transporter. Surprised it's taken me this long to watch a Jet Li film that actually stars the guy, rather than having him be part of an ensemble cast or playing the villain. Oh well, better late than never

Not a fan of martial arts flicks, but Jet Li does a great job being likeable and kicking ass at the same time. I especially appreciate that the fight sequences don't go on forever and ever. Other than that, not much else going on here. Typical drug dealer-corrupt cop flick. For some reason, Chinese people in France all speak English.

Jet Li was great. The fight cinematography sucks, typical of how Westerners film fight sequences. The plot sucks Tcheky Karyo always does a great job, even though the villain tropes are monumentally pedantic. The plot sucks, the wanton and extreme violence is ridiculous and senseless. Bert Kwouk has a really brief appearance. Fast forward through most of it to see Jet fight and you won't miss anything.

The kiss of the dragon is designated as a special move when a needle is stuck in your neck and all the blood rushes to your head causing a massive hemorrhage Well the main character here does more than just that to his enemies Jet Li and Bridget Fonda Liu Juan is a cop brought to Paris to infiltrate a drug ring But things go sour when the man he's protecting turns on him Jean-Pierre Richard is a corrupt officer operating the whole thing Juan is also framed for murder involving two prostitutes so he has to dodge Richard's thugs while also trying to prove his innocence All the while he befriends one of the prostitutes named Jessica who's trapped by the man hunting Juan Li is slick, lethal, and quite the fighter The fight scenes are expertly choreographed along the lines of Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee, the action is exhilarating The slow personal human moments aren't really that deep though They put a lot of the excitement on hold But Li still has such a commanding screen presence and the movie is extremely bloody and violent Plot, believability, and character development might be lacking a lot but the action fans will get their fair share It's got that hint of 'Transporter' energy sprinkled

I love Jet Li and his skills! Enough to make it a great movie for me!

As long as you don't stare too hard at the plot, this is pretty good viewing material. I liked that the fight scenes incorporated some very Jackie Chan-like moves and had subtle examples of humor, and Bridget did an excellent job in her role - it's unfortunate she retired from acting. I really liked the creative use of editing to enhance the fights with the bigger guys, clipping frames out as their punches land to make them seem more forceful, and the music was good where noticeable. The dialogue was not as corny as it could've been and the plot premise was well thought-out.

Ok action film without Luc Besson's normal spark.

a fun action film with an idiotic plot jet li is set up to take the rap for a murder committed by a french police official but escapes before they can arrest him - so far, so good but then a police troop of fifty men react by shooting up so much of paris with an array of ballistic hardware that maintaining any cover up seems far fetched bridgette fonda is cast as a pathetic damsel in distress role and jet must somehow escape the french pigs and save the girl, all before the popcorn runs out the action is cool but it's too stupid take seriously

Kiss Of The Dragon's Realism meets Style action makes up for its basic story.

Apr 18, 2020

Liu Siu-jian (Jet Li), a Chinese intelligence agent, is sent to Paris to help apprehend Chinese mob boss Mr. Big (Ric Young), who is involved in heroin smuggling. He meets Inspector Jean-Pierre Richard (Tchéky Karyo), a corrupt and violent French police detective, at a hotel. Richard tricks Liu into believing he is simply providing reconnaissance of a meet involving Mr. Big. The plans are changed when Mr. Big is introduced to two prostitutes, one being Jessica Kamen (Bridget Fonda), an American woman, who takes him to his room to service him. While Liu and the rest are watching through the surveillance camera, Mr. Big kicks everyone out except for two women. After pretending to seduce him, one of the women then stabs Mr. Big. Overseeing the events from a surveillance room, Liu rushes to stop the killing, but Richard enters shortly later to shoot Mr. Big and the woman with Liu's police-issued handgun, framing Liu for the murders. Realizing he has been set up, Liu manages to escape from the hotel with a surveillance tape showing Richard shooting Mr. Big. Chinese liaisons are sent to France after the events to investigate the matter, as Richard makes Liu the primary suspect. However, the liaisons do not believe the story Richard provides. Liu manages to contact one of the liaisons, and passes on to him the tape that reveals the truth. Due to French police surveillance, the meet between the liaison and Liu is spotted, and the liaison is assassinated. Liu is then forced to flee from a horde of cops and even GIGN commandos. After Liu escapes, he is forced to maintain a low profile... The movie met with mixed reaction from critics, who thought violence overwhelmed it at the expense of the story and even a true portrayal of martial arts. The fans generally rated it as better than Jet Li's other American films (Romeo Must Die, The One and Cradle 2 the Grave). Due to its violence, "Kiss of the Dragon" was banned in China. Li spoke out about this censorship. "Kiss of The Dragon" (Le Baiser mortel du dragon) is a Jet Li action vehicle to show of his martial arts skills with a pretty vague storyline, over the top violence and not much else. The film is based on a story by Li, and is one of Fonda's final on-screen appearances before her retirement from acting. Tchéky Karyo does what he does best, a mad man with no restrictions and the wonderful Bridget Fonda is not getting much to work with and the character doesn´t really fit her. And of course it´s Luc Besson who has produced and written this average action flick. "Kiss of The Dragon" is hardly a must see and the best part of the film for me personally is simply the setting in lovely Paris.

This martial arts movie is pretty cool. Jet Li is a real badass in this movie, in fact, he's really fast with his martial arts skills and he knows how to beat an opponent no matter how big they are. Bridget Fonda does an excellent job in this movie as well. The plot to the movie was pretty good and it had a little twist in the beginning. In addition, the fight scenes were awesome in this movie. Check it out.
