La Haine Reviews

Apr 23, 2025

No words, simply breathtaking.

The stylized direction is a bit much at times and the film is not without parts that drag, especially in the beginning as the characters wander about, yet the acting is realistic across the board, the themes thought-provoking and layered and the unexpected occasional doses of humour a great touch. By the end the movie has emerged as viscerally unsettling yet predictably grim and crushingly nihilistic - it may not lead to a breakthrough regarding the issues at hand but is a nice punch to the gut.

No, I don't have any idea why this didn't land with me as well as it has with others. A politically charged, urban neo-noir sounds like something that'd be right up my alley (especially now), but for whatever reason I responded the way I did to this. What Mathieu Kassovitz does here is undoubtedly well-made for the era and in a vacuum (seriously, how did he do that one crazy proto-drone shot in 1995?), and its conclusion is legendary for obvious reasons, but I think its the lead-up that I still need to sit with. There's meaning to be gleaned, but I think I'm still kind of struggling with what it all means to *me* — not just some guy that went to film school, but some guy who watches movies. For now, there's plenty to like and I'm glad I watched. Perhaps future viewings will bear different fruit.

A fabulous classic movie with great shots and an amazing cast. Must-see!

I don't see the point of this movie.

A searing but beautifully rendered portrait of disenfranchised youth. La Haine's raw performances bring a kind of immediacy and humanity to its characters seldom captured on film. Kinetic camerawork and an immersive, emotionally charged atmosphere infuse the story with a sense of urgency, in which the very witnessing of these events feels like a matter of life and death.

Saw it since it was on the IMDb 250 list. It is an important movie showing the divisions of lower class France. However, its story never got beyond itself to the bigger questions. But maybe it did not have to? Good acting and direction. It was a powerful statement critiquing the status quo that still resonates. SLC library DVD.

It has too much foul language and no moral values, but there was something about this film that I liked. I don’t know what.

the film is produced very unique. The characters are greatly designed. Dont kno how to feel about the fact, there was no background music. The film was kind of wandering around, nothing was really happening, leaving you with the expectation of a really good ending. The ending wasnt really good tho. It was really random and the drama felt forced. Leaving with an open ending, so that people could interpret what it could have meant. Just, that there was no clear meaning behind the ending, making it a flop in my opinion.

Really good movie. Raw and gritty while at the same time funny.

La Haine is an outstanding film from the last century about the Parisian banlieue. The camerawork, acting, and script are realistic and perfectly executed. Nothing less than 5 stars.

A must-watch for fans of socially conscious cinema! Its raw and unfiltered portrayal of urban life, combined with its powerful performances and thought-provoking themes, make it a standout film that demands attention and reflection.

It's nearly 30years old film but still relevant and maybe becoming even more important. Now this adopted to theatre. It's not joyous to watch, realistic and rough throughout without clear narrative, and suddenly you see the ending which is the peak.

Very, very good movie! 'La Haine' is interesting slice of life viewing, I was intrigued across the whole 90 or so minutes as it tells its tale nicely. Some of the cinematography (b/w, smart choice) and editing is particularly impressive, while the ending is stark and unforgettable. The intentions of the film come across loud and clear. I didn't overly connect with the main trio, aside from Hubert. I could also sense that something was on the horizon (didn't see it going exactly that way, mind) from early on, so you kinda are just sitting there waiting for the penny to drop - but there's no doubting the film successfully keeps you on tenterhooks. The characters are a bit meh in terms of wanting to watch them, though the actors who play them are excellent - without question. Hubert Koundé is the one I'll likely remember most, even with still noteworthy performances from Vincent Cassel and Saïd Taghmaoui; two actors I have seen in a few English-language flicks down the years.

What a film! Easy to watch, fast paced, beautifully filmed and immersed in the streets of frustrated Paris youths living in housing estates. Poetic in a gritty way. I was originally drawn to this because the thumbnail reminded me of the gun scene from Taxi Driver (with Robert De Niro). Must watch!

I wasn't sure about this movie for a significant length of the runtime. But the ending has to be one of the best ones put into screen. Letting aside how beautifully shot this movie was the story comes to a perfect end with unexpected events that will shake you to the core. It was hard to connect with the protagonist and so much hate on both sides towards each other. At the end I understood everyone thinks they are doing right in their own means and that doesn't necessarily mean other people perceive it the same way. It's an empathy and understanding event that was unique and entertaining but I had no fun watching. Nevertheless, it is a classic and a masterpiece for what it intends to portray and that patience pays off.

"La Haine" explores a variety of topics that will likely be relevant somewhere at some point in time for the rest of the time to come. I think that gives this film a timeless feel and that is why it is talked about so much in film circles. It is also really well shot and well acted to the point where it doesn't always feel like a movie. I will go ahead and say I probably don't like this movie as much as many others do, but I still have a great appreciation for the craft at display here. I think the story builds up to a finale that will stick with me, but a lot of the time I wasn't sure what was going to happen, which on the same token, is why it can be an engaging film to experience. Overall, it is a movie that is technically brilliant with relevant ideas but isn't always the most entertaining or gripping when it comes to storytelling.

Had the whole cinema in silence once the credits began to roll. The anxiety and stress I felt throughout this movie is a monumental achievement for a director and cast presenting the struggles of adolescent life in the underfunded, restless, hostile out suburbs of a city.

Jusqu'ici, tout va bien. La Haine is an outstanding French movie that shines through beautiful cinematography and provides some of the best character studies of cinema. Vinz, Hubert, and Said are all great actors and characters, and the plot brings forward a compelling message about the underlying faults of French society and class issues in the 90s. A marvelous story brought by the mastermind of Mathieu Kassovitz. Definitely a must-watch piece of European cinema.
