Ladyhawke Reviews

Mar 9, 2025

It’s not bad, but not so fun too watch. Matthew Broderick it’s not convincing and over the top. I’m the end I didn’t like it. Sorry Mr. Donner but putting a side Superman your beginnings were not a my favorites ones.

This was a pretty engaging film! Lots to love. Good characters. I disliked the score in how it set the tone for most scenes, but I think overall this a film worth trying!

Fantasy - takes place in the King Arthur world of sorts- this tale has some good moments that capture the imagination in a battle of good and evil.

Who said they're pacing problems? The pacing is one of the miraculous features of this dramedy. Comedian Matthew Broderick is at his finest. Rutger Hauer is where he belongs on the top of a mighty steed, stately, dignified, and noble. Yum. And Michele Pfeiffer is as delicate and otherworldly as she always is, too pristine for mere mortals. Ladyhawke is action-packed, with perfect pacing to keep the story moving with twists, mystery, and wonderment. Who the heck is casting dispersions on this 10 out of 10 movie? Let's go, people, put your rating in. This is a 10. It's irreplaceable. It's incomparable. It's a love story drama and an adventure comedy. 10!

While I have seen this film before, it was over ten years ago and I think that I can confidently say it was like watching it again for the first time. I love this film, it has such sharp dialogue and such interesting characters. I forgot how slow of a burn this film is, but it hits in the end.

Beautiful story, great actors. But the horrible filmscore ruins this nice movie for me.

If you can tolerate the truly awful score (especially in the first half of the movie) this is actually one of the best fantasy movies of the 80s. Suprisingly romantic and emotional with a number of very good performances.

One of my favorite "comfort"" movies, like visiting and old friend.

What the hell was this?! ...it was boring, that's for sure

Ladyhawke is not without its problems, which includes some pretty awful pacing and editing in the first half of the film, but the rest of the film after that is a pretty good fairytale fantasy film that in the heart of the film is overall a beautiful heartwarming love story at its core.

It is very much an 80s movie, so many younger audiences might not see why I love it so much. The score is cheap and electronic, but surprisingly, it still adds to the narrative, and the overall story still has a romantic punch, even 40 years later. As a kid, I found it just a great sword/sorcery movie, but as an adult, I found myself identifying with the main characters and seeing myself, both good and bad, in Navvare.

Tragic sci-fi love story. I just LOVED this. If they were to do a reboot, they seriously need to redo the music and make it more genre-suitable. Cast Gaston with someone slightly more sincere and authentic, like Colin Morgan (less Ferris Bueller).

Deeply, deeply flawed. Geared toward a young teenage audience, the director lost the golden opportunity to create an enduring classic. It begins (and ends if you must know) with a modern music score to a romantic myth set in the middle ages. At the very least, they should have gone with classical music, which is timeless. The main character is a charming Matthew Broderick playing a medieval Ferris Bueler character, a pickpocket and a thief always in trouble. The crux of the film is the doomed love story between Rutger Hauer and Michelle Pfeifer, two talented actors with drop dead good looks. Yet their story seems almost an afterthought. Even the climatic ending left me irritated. It went on and on to no purpose. What a shame! With more care and attention to detail, this could have been a moving love story told through the eyes of a charming street urchin. Two years after this film, The Princess Bride was released. What a difference in the two films.

This fantasy movie never gets old. Beautiful setting and photography, perfect casting choices and a plot that keeps you hooked from scene one till the end.

After having read through many of the critics reviews, I find myself forced to ask- what movie were they watching?!? Because it certainly wasn't this one! This was far & away one of my favorites growing up (& still is). Fantasy with a bit of everything from action (sans gore or the need for overblown special effects), magic (a dastardly curse), romance (a beautifully tragic love story), lighthearted comedy (Matthew Broderick's Mouse & Leo McKern's Imperious provide some wonderful chuckles alongside more serious moments), drama, & beautifully shot scenery. The one thing I've agreed with is that the soundtrack could have been better, but it isn't terrible. (No popular music of the period was used, concentrating instead on a more symphonic accompaniment.) You have Rutger Hauer as the honorable, but vengeance-focused hero, Etienne Navarre. Ruggedly handsome without needing to be "pretty", & a very capable character actor that easily provides the physicality needed for the role as well as the more emotional side. Matthew Broderick does an excellent job providing both lighthearted chuckles as well as emotional depth as the charmingly roguish Phillippe "the Mouse" Gaston. And Michelle Pfeiffer is... well, Michelle Pfeiffer. (Yes, this was definitely one of my earliest crushes. I mean, the scene where we first see her turn towards the camera was masterfully done, providing ultimate focus on that angelic face & those stunning eyes!) She portrays Isabeau, the beautiful love interest to Hauer's Navarre, with grace & charm, & provides a desirable beauty without needing to resort to cheap displays of flesh or sexuality. Is it the best fantasy movie ever made? No, of course not. But for its time period it was extremely well done, providing a full story without needing to rush through or distract with special effects or overdone violence. The characters are given enough depth to know who they are without wasting time trying to include their entire backstories, & the story includes only what details the audience needs to understand what is happening & become invested with how it will all end. Will this hold the attention of the very young in the family (10 & under)? Probably not. But for the older kids (especially those with a predisposition to the fantasy genre), it provides plenty of entertainment value.

It's an excellent motion picture with romantic genre, Ladyhawke, 1985, with director and co-producer by Richard Donner...

This was actually a really good movie. It has Matthew Broderick, a good score, good filmography, good writing, the works.

Matthew Broderick, Michelle Pfeiffer, and the late Rutger Hauer in a fairy tale along the lines of 'Princess Bride' prisoner Philippe escapes from captivity and runs into Captain Navarre this seems like a chance for him to make something of himself when he's tasked to protect the love of Navarre's life, Lady Isabeau d'Anjou turns out a curse is also put upon the two in love; they can't be around one another except during twilight the evil Bishop of Aquila is the one who casted the spell so it's up to Philippe to find a way to break the enchantment forever this is more on the lower end of the spectrum as far as epic fantasy/romance stories go, it isn't anything amazing just more on a smaller scale you can tell it's lower budget too as there's only slight instances of the magical involved still I will give credit to Hauer, Pfeiffer, and Broderick all relying on each other proving that no amount of magic can shatter true love the sweeping romance is enough to make the film worth watching if every other element is below par plus the costumes look very well put together average but full of good talents

For a fantasy genre film, it's actually quite funny. Broderick's little quips will make you giggle, but John Wood's character The Bishop of Aquila has some of the most sarcastic and quotable lines of the film. I saw this movie in theaters when it came out, and I have owned several copies in various mediums over the decades. I still enjoy watching it and sharing it with family and friends. My favorite quote from Wood - which he delivers with a self-righteous sneer - is, "I believe in miracles, Marquet. It's part of my job."

The lady is also a hawk. The movie spends almost an hour building up to that revelation, as if it's not included in the title. Strange fantasy film. There are a lot of gears grinding here given the odd pacing and in particular the casting of Matthew Broderick; it looks like he was brought on board to give the script some levity with his quippy, Ferris Bueller charm, but it's a weird tone shift from the classical romantic elements that he finds himself in - a supernatural tale of longing where two lovers are turned into animals by night and day to keep them apart (Rutger Hauer as a wolf and Michelle Pfeiffer as a hawk, respectively). The very design of the film keeps the two of them from building any chemistry because they're virtually never onscreen together, but it's got that bit of Greek tragedy spirit to compensate. The tone issues really are a limiting factor, but the production value is all there thanks in large part to cinematography from Vittorio Storaro. Alfred Molina feels underused as a minor antagonist, but Shakespearean regular John Wood gives the right amount of divine evil to a corrupt, self-serving bishop. All around, pretty forgettable. (2.5/5)
