I am in much the shape that Eli was in as I struggle with CHF, pulmonary failure among other issues; a shell of my former self due to Lupus. I thought the movie was wonderful and wish that all families could face death as openly and lovingly as Eli's family. What a triumph they all experienced and accomplished because they accepted his wishes with such openness and love; working together day by day through to the end with understanding, respect, and full support of each other. Every one of them deserves a medal, but it seems Eli's love and loyalty to family and friends, his steadfast care, kindness and compassion was blessing enough to be the example to all of how to live a life of service and goodness. God bless them all. This movie was really a gift.
This movie was an emotional one for me. I had to watch it in segments. I home hospiced my Mom, it's hard, really hard. This was poignantly beautiful, and tragically horrific to me at the same time. This incredible human being, who I knew nothing about, has impacted me. The legal torturous journey to have agency over your own departure of this world, for someone so long suffering was tough. The unbearable part was the unnecessary, what I consider torture. If you are too sick to take the medicine un-aided, your shit outta luck. And instead of delivering the medication by injection, they make them drink a foul tasting poison, that even strong anti nausea medicine has a hard time controlling the gag reflex from. It's like forced torture by the legal system, one last sucker punch, after so many slaps, for allowing one that autonomy. sickening. .
Brilliant man chooses how he wants to leave this world. Daughter films it. Observer sits uncomfortably.
Absolutely perfect, altho heart wrenching, portrait of what most people would view as a "good death" -- dying at a time of your choosing, surrounded by family, with a chance to forgive yourself for past mistakes, and provide hospice-level treatment to minimize pain and discomfort. The filmmaker and her sister, the rabbi, have presented the rest of the world with a miracle.
