David R Where did this movie come from? I've seen all the Universal and Naschy werewolf flicks, as well as the 80's resurgence spurred by the excellent "An American Werewolf In London," and I've seen a bunch of the cliches, repeatedly. But this one... "Late Phases," has a blind curmudgeon of a veteran as its protagonist? Brilliant! The story and its execution, the acting and the build up of tension, all worked for me. I appreciate that this was a lower budget film, so I'm not gonna bash the werewolf/bear suits. It's all good. The feel of this movie was totally right. Loved it! What old, disabled people have to put up with in their 'Late Phases' is often sad to horrifying. Yes, there's werewolves, but they really aren't the scariest part. Some of my favorites include American Werewolf in London, Silver Bullet, Dog Soldiers, Underworld, Ginger Snaps, and Company of the wolves. Late Phases falls on my favorite werewolf movies too. This movie has practical effects, original story and my favorite actor from "Stake Land" stars in it. The movie starts out with a blind, retired war veteran moving into a retirement community to live, except there's just one problem. The nightmare he faces his first night is a werewolf attack, that leaves his guide dog dead. He has one one to prepare for the next full moon. The movie is really character driven and original. The practical effects and effects are quite good considering the budget. This is still one of my favorite werewolf movies to this date and that is says alot for it. Give it a try. The main transformation sequence is captured in a seemles shot, With very little cgi. The teeth falling out over the floor is a lovely touch. Whilst not a prefect movie it must be recognised that it is not a big budget movie in any sense. However it does so equip itself very well and is at least thought provoking when one puts oneself in the position of a blind person dealing with the situation that it presented.
