Drunken Master II Reviews

Mar 21, 2025

It's so funny with original Chinese audio, love the mother, she reminds me of Lucy (Lucille Ball)! Took me years to find it without the English dub. Movie has all the impressive fighting to expect from Jackie Chan as well!

A Must-Watch for Martial Arts Enthusiasts: The Excitement of Drunken Master The film beautifully balances the internal conflict faced by Wong Fei-Hung as he grapples with the dilemma of honoring his pacifist father's wishes while confronting a group of disrespectful foreigners attempting to steal precious treasures. Jackie Chan's portrayal of the legendary "Drunken Fist" master, Huang Fei-hung, is both charismatic and awe-inspiring, showcasing his exceptional martial arts skills. The action sequences in The Legend of Drunken Master are truly remarkable, choreographed with precision and creativity. Jackie Chan's unique blend of acrobatics, comedy, and fighting techniques adds a layer of excitement and entertainment that sets this film apart. Each fight scene is a spectacle to behold, leaving viewers on the edge of their seats and craving for more. Beyond the thrilling action, Drunken Master also addresses political chaos and the struggle for national pride during a time of transition in China. The film effectively portrays the clash between Chinese values and the influence of unscrupulous foreign powers, highlighting the courage and determination needed to protect one's heritage. In conclusion, Drunken Master deserves its high praise and rating of 9 out of 10. Jackie Chan's outstanding performance, combined with expertly choreographed fight sequences and a compelling storyline, make this martial arts blockbuster a must-watch for fans of the genre. It successfully captures the spirit of a tumultuous era while delivering an unforgettable cinematic experience.

Classic. Love Jackie Chan!

Jackie Chan's crippling alcoholic fighting style is back and better than ever. A fundamentally different beast from the original, Drunken Master II is quite simply amazing, housing some of the most intricate, difficult and joyfully executed action sequences you'll ever see. But it needed more Andy Lau outside of his extremely brief cameo...

Jackie Chan makes a sequel to Drunken Master, sixteen years later, and still tries to pass himself off as a teenager. Attitude goes a long way, and Jackie plays almost every role with the same tried-and-true blend of youthful na?vet¨¦ and cheerful exuberance, but there's no denying he's a middle-aged man here and it's a little awkward to pretend otherwise. He's nine years older than Anita Mui, for instance, who plays his feisty stepmother, and looks every bit of it. Still, no matter his age, he can deliver action with all the energy of a fresh-faced youngster, and Drunken Master II gives him multiple occasions to do so. Against the scaffold of a flimsy plot (the bad guys want to steal precious artifacts and ship them off to England), he finds a worthy cause to fight for and a horde of physically-capable antagonists to fight against. And fight they do, in a variety of styles and settings, with the titular art of drunken boxing often teased and then quickly withdrawn. Chan's father, it seems, does not approve of drinking and Jackie's fighting form is at its best when he's genuinely intoxicated. That leads to a winking tug-of-war with the audience, understandably eager to see the methods promised by the title, which ultimately pays off in a jumbo-sized climax in which the star's hidden powers (and legendary tolerance levels) are fully revealed at last. The non-combat scenes can be exhausting, packed as they are with bad comedy and superficial characters, but kung fu action is the real draw and Jackie's physical presence in that respect is undeniable. I wish they'd have done less wire work and focused more on Jackie Chan being Jackie Chan (as his immediate follow-up, 1995's Rumble in the Bronx, did so very well), and both points seem to have been contentious during production. Chan clashed with director Lau Kar-leung, with the latter walking off the set before filming the climactic fight sequence, and found himself a more like-minded director for Rumble.

October 23, 2000 (USA)- This week marks the 20th Anniversary of the US release of Jackie Chan's The Legend of Drunken Master. Released in China in 1994 as Drunken Master II, the film hit US theaters as a non-sequel in 2000. The original was released in 1978; however, the films stand independently for viewing purposes. This film's plot, centering around stolen Chinese Antiquities by the British, is a vehicle for showcasing Chan's epic style of martial arts fight choreography. The film was hailed by the late film critic, Roger Ebert, as a benchmark work and epic film making. It has been listed as one of the 100 all-time best films, one of Chan's best, and one of the top 10 martial arts film ever made. The film's climactic "factory fight" against Taekwondo trained, Ken Lo, is a true feast for the eyes. This 20 minute jaw dropping fight scene was clearly shot without stunt doubles. The fight choreography is still unequaled, 20 years later.

This is one of the best Martial Arts movies that I have seen besides others of course, Jackie Chan was great in this film, packed with great action, and don't get me started about the fighting sequences, some of the best fighting scenes that I have seen. This movie goes down as one of my favorite Jackie Chan movies that I have seen. So for this becoming one of Jackie Chans best movies of all time, I give " The Legend Of Drunken Master " an A-.

I have to be honest, when I saw the title ¡°The Legend of Drunken Master¡± I thought perhaps that was some kind of strange honorary name given to the kung fu master in the film. How could I have known that the entire movie is about a guy who actually fights like a drunk, and alcohol for him is like spinach for Popeye? This movie might just be the best example of the physical comedy genius that is Jackie Chan. His movements are hilarious, and yet still graceful and artful. He is playing drunk to an extreme that is ridiculous, and yet he¡¯s also hitting every mark and working through the fight they choreographed with the precision of a master. It¡¯s as if someone merged Charlie Chaplin and Bruce Lee into one actor. Once again in this film, Jackie Chan also takes advantage of a ton of different props that you wouldn¡¯t typically see utilized in a fight. I love that they are constantly arming him with silly things when his opponents are attacking with knives or swords that would ordinarily dominate in any fight. The weakness of The Legend of Drunken Master is the plot, which is the same weakness as most other Jackie Chan¡¯s films. They are so caught up in getting to the next action beat, or setting up the next joke, that they don¡¯t have time to really tell a good story. It doesn¡¯t bother me all that much, because I have so much fun with everything else going on that I can ignore how flimsy the motivations are for any of the characters. I found myself laughing a lot at this movie, and I particularly loved what Anita Mui brought comedically, playing the main character¡¯s step-mother. It¡¯s also worth mentioning how ridiculous the stunts are for these films. As is typical with a Jackie Chan production, they show some behind-the-scenes clips during the credits, and you¡¯d almost think this guy has a death wish based on the way he puts his body on the line. It¡¯s remarkable stuff, but it pays off in thrilling action scenes. The Legend of Drunken Master might be light on story, but it has so much to enjoy that it¡¯s hard to complain about that. I¡¯m anxious to watch it again.

One of Jackie Chan's finest action performances. You're not watching this movie for the plot, it's all about the action baby! Especially at the end of the movie! ?? 1/2'??
