Love After Love Reviews
Been meaning to get to this one for a while, and it did not disappoint. Writer/director Russell Harbaugh, and his co-writer Eric Mendelsohn, did fine work in creating multi-dimensional characters in a very authentic, relatable word who are experiencing some extreme relationship changes within their family. Themes of dealing w/ tragic loss, infidelity, familial dynamics, and lack of taking responsibility for selfish acts are all deal with realistically and with real depth. There's elements of Bergman, Altman, and Riechardt's work in the movie. The acting throughout is strong as well. McDowell, O'Dowd, and Adomain are esp. good. O'Dowd nails the self-serving adulterous guy who deals with his own issues by attacking others. Adomain is the sad sack who hasn't found a sense of purpose that will bring him the sense of self-worth he needs. And McDowell's matriarch trying to keep it together after losing her husband and 'her boys' father is convincing to the end. Great support work as well. Credit also to the editing work and the musical score that hits the right notes that fit the tone. Recommended- 3.8 stars
How did this movie get such high reviews? It was painfully boring, interspersed with moments that were painfully embarrassing to watch. Nick was just an awful human being, no way that many attractive women would've put up with his shit, only his poor suffering girlfriend was somewhat likable and interesting. Andi MacDowel was great but she deserved better material than this and seeing her deal with her awful family was just tiresome, and ultimately the storyline didn't go anywhere. In the end, the entire movie just seemed...pointless.
I absolutely hated this movie. Hulu says, "Andie MacDowell shines as a mother exploring a new beginning while watching her sons' lives fall apart in this funny and inspiring drama." It also classifies it as a drama and romance. I kept waiting for funny and inspiring but never saw them. I waited for the romance, but instead saw the childish son acting out. Even if you you just lost your dad, you can be a decent person. The movie was full of the grief from losing a loved one, but it didn't really show a lot of that grief and desperation. Instead, it showed the deep, passive-aggressive anger of Chris O'Dowd's character and a complete lack of character development in all the roles throughout the entire movie. It never showed the mother exploring anything...there were a couple after sex scenes, one where she's sitting in a bar drinking a glass of wine alone and goes in to bop for a second on the dance floor, another when she's in the middle of making love with a new man, but no cohesive journey. Everything felt flat, boring and lifeless. And the ending? I just sat there and thought, "What was the point?" I just wasted an hour and a half of my life.
Shallow and boring ... no character development to speak of.... audience doesn't care enough about anyone to connect....
Watched it recently using boxxy software app. There are some really good scenes of relationship dysfunction here but the occasionally jarring edits between scenes of indeterminate time really undermine a lot of it. The style of the film was not for me, despite its obviously shot on film and gives a lot of space for its actors. Though, this is the type of film that completely relies on the actors' performances. I feel like some of these performances would be more notable if they were given better material to work with.
This is a seriously disappointiing movie. Having someone as beautiful as Andie MacDowell is not enough to carry the filim, indeed itis partof the problem. MacDowell playing the role of a mother of two grown men never achieved credibility in the roleand her looks seriouslydiminished the subordinatefemale actors. Grief is a searing, random experience and, while, on occasion, this was adequately presented, too much of the film consisted of inchoate scenes of rage and emotion.Where this was notenough, there were numerous sex scenes which did not adequately convey who was screwing who! I think it is safe to say, if we don'tknow who is screwing who in a film, then the audience is the one being screwed! Avoid this film.
I do respect the idea behind the film and the cast was good too but I haven't lost anyone so I really can't relate to grief stages where people do unreasonable stuff and act out. I got very bored to be honest.
Chris O'Dowd gives an incredible performance as a wholly unlikeable man. Otherwise, buckle up and get ready for disjointed story about a dysfunctional family made only more so by death. It's a carousel you can't dismount. The film doesn't so much end as die.
thought I'd like the movie, but struggled to sit through it, hated almost all the characters. In the end I did not even have respect for Suzanne, she raised a couple of imbeciles for sons. These are not people I'd want to spend any time with.
Andie MacDowell gives a personal best performance in Love After Love, but doesn't get backed up with a concrete tragic grieving story that feels like its constantly jumping to unexplained behavior from all its characters.
I had been looking forward to this movie since I am a fan of both Andie MacDowell & Chris O'Dowd but I was disappointed. There is no discernible plot. The relationships between the three main characters are painful to watch. I suffered through it to the end, but it was boring, boring, boring.
We walked out after 20 minutes of hard core sex scences, mindless dialogue and characters picking fights for no reason. It's a horrible movie. The death scenes are unrealistic; anyone who has had a family member in a hospice setting knows the patient gets small doses of drugs at regular intervals to keep the pain and anxiety at bay.
A total waste of time with offensive language to Christians. Nothing but a bunch of meaningless back and forth of a dysfunctional family. No point, no plot, and absolutely nothing to remember. I would have preferred wasting two hours in the lobby.
I haven't walked out of a movie in over 30 years! I walked out of this movie - IT WAS HORRIBLE! We were surprised that Andie MacDowell lowered herself to play in this film. This is NOT an example of an average American family. It is dark and dreadful to watch.
Every scene except a stand up comedy scene, was muddled and hard to watch. The sex scenes were somewhat gratuitous and unneeded. Don’t bother.
Terrible movie. Slow, never goes anywhere. Characters difficult to follow as to their relationship to main characters. Basically unhappy people without much life.
Horribly boring movie. Rambles. Makes absolutely No sense. I kept watching because of these ratings -- I should have stopped as it didn't get any better. Now, all I am is MAD at the wasted time.
