Love and Honor Reviews
This film wasn’t as airtight as the two predecessors, but it was still a highly enjoyable film. Yamasa Yoji is an expert at filming sword fights. No shaky cam. No unnecessary cuts. Just intense, well-framed, suspenseful battle. There are some pretty glaring plot holes that kept me from fully investing emotionally with the characters. However, this is certainly a film to indulge with the trilogy.
Despite having similar feel to previous entries. This is a very different movie, focused on a more realistic take of a 'blind samurai'. The highlight of the film is Takuya Kimura and his character. His juvenile attituded. And both mental and physical struggle to retain control of his life because of blind adherence to archaic tradition are very compelling.
Not as good as The Twilight Samurai or The Hidden Blade, but this film is a worthy successor of the two.
Never seen such a heartbreaking story like this. I could feel Shinnojo's pain. Loved it and now my new favorite jap film, next to 'Hariki' and 'Rashomon'. Such an incredible story.
This third film (bushi no ichibun) in Yamada's jidaigeki trilogy (following The Twilight Samurai and The Hidden Blade) is a rather sombre affair, albeit with excellent production values. Takuya Kimura (from aging superstar boy-band SMAP) stars as a low-rank samurai engaged as a poison-tester of the Lord's meals who eats some bad fish and becomes blind. The consequences of this for his relationship with his wife and for his self-esteem are the focus of the story. Yamada maintains a good sense of the everyday reality of people's lives (although this is somewhat freer from grit and grime than you would expect), which keeps things from becoming too overwhelmingly tragic even though the events portrayed are pretty dire. I can't quite recall the earlier films in the trilogy but I suspect that they are rather better than this one - which is still a fine film (so, if you have to choose...).
This movie is incredible with such a talented cast. It's nomination for 13 Japanese Academy Awards was well deserved. Stamp of Judgement: Platinum Goods
Shinnojo is the last "twilight samurai" in Yamada's trilogy, and the less critic against The System: his wife, however, is one of the most prominent female characters of the series (and that says something), and with quiet force, she gently dissents. All you need is love, and a katana.
It's actually about blindness rather than sword fighting, but it's beautifully done. Although slow paced, the film is never boring, and the few characters are all fleshed out well. I really enjoyed it even though the settings were limited and there was no flashy cgi or special effects. Just a good story that let you in and made you feel one of the family.
The Samurai Trilogy and The Law Of Diminishing Returns. This film doesn't sit at all well with its classmates. The casting was wrong and the story is a lazy combination of others. Hiroyuki Sanada, Masatoshi Nagase and Kimura Takuya.....Spot the odd one out!
It's my first Yamada film and the first one I saw of his Samurai Trilogy. I love it so much and one can certainly take it in slowly. It teaches one the fact that even an ordinary person, as the low-rank samurai in the film, can own utmost dignity and stay triumphant when it comes to setbacks.
Most romantic amongst three episodes of Yoji Yamada's famous Samurai trilogy.. incredibly romantic and subtle and sentimental in its own way..
This is well made and told but anytime I watch a samurai movie, regardless of how good it is, I can't help but wish I was watching a Kurosawa picture instead. His brilliance has just about spoiled the whole genre for me. Love and Honor is good though. A little too slow at times and the end is a little cheesy, but a commendable effort on a genre that Kurosawa has always owned. And always will.

I love Yoji Yamada's samurai trilogy. Each film is a deep slice of life. Twilight Samurai is definitely the best of the three, but I'd say this is second best.
Stylish Japanese Drama which never bores or overstays its welcome. Nice touches of humour and pathos, a perfect conclusion to Yoji Yamada's samurai trilogy, this is a must see 10/10
Another samurai movie from Yoji Yamada. You know the drill by now. Realistic and awesome, like all his samurai films.
