Madame Bovary Reviews
For an adaptation of a book that centers itself around passion this film is cold, heartless, and leaves me wondering how on Earth I am supposed to empathize with the main character
A movie that failed to adapt from its source material that left a husk of what should have been adapted.
Wow these reviews are really surprising. But if you are a Flaubert fan, and if you have indeed read the book, and you know Flaubert's realistic message about life in all his work, you will have a much greater opinion of this movie than some of these negative reviews. This is an excellent adaptation and Mia W., whose quiet beauty perfectly casts her as the naive heroine, discovering her passions unfortunately too late to save her from a marriage devoid of equal passions for lust and life. The only negative I thought was the usually great Paul Giametti ill, and under, used in a small part. But the movie is overall excellent.
The characters were not developed enough at all. She is "in love" but you never see them anywhere outside of bed really. When she feels for the black haired guy, then next thing is in bed with brown haired guy, I was like, "Did I miss something here????"" I felt nothing for her, she was greedy, selfish and while women were poor and working and walking by her, she had on RICH clothing. Did not care for the movie. Very empty. I am going to watch the 1949 one and hope for more! I must say, as others, I loved the scenery and the music. That saved it for me. But very very underdeveloped characters that one feels nothing for.
Beautiful period adaptation of Flaubert's novel that deals with its complicated heroine! I feel that in this version, Flaubert's book main message is being respected. It is mostly about a woman wanting to experience all the pleasures of life and not being able to do it. Because of herself as well as because of her environment. I thought the actors and actresses were perfect in their role. In the end, Madame Bovary finds herself without friends and solutions. She understands how naive she has been with men and has no woman friend. Her whole world has collapsed. The cinematography and the costumes are simply gorgeous, but they're more than eye-candy, they are integrally connected to the emotional changes in Emma and the times in which she lived.
I have not read much of the book so I can't speak for how well it follows, but I really liked the movie. The acting was excellent and there was barely any swearing or nudity. It was the first time I'd ever gotten jealous over a character's wardrobe. Emma Bovary's clothes were absolutely gorgeous.
Hard to make this subject work. Unlike able characters in print don't usually make pleasant viewing. Still enjoyable enough for 4 stars from me. Credit to Altus/ prescience films funding it
Admittedly, I've never read Madame Bovary but that didn't stop me reading the wikipedia article after I watched this movie. If you're a huge fan of the book, maybe just skip this. From the info I got, Emma was a really complex, interesting character whereas from this movie I got "woman needs attention and expensive dresses". Her turn to religion after her affair was omitted, as was any mention of her having a child. Charles was little more than a background character too. Honestly the best part about this flop was Ezra Miller's hair.
It tells the story solidly and I signed up to this for the cast and the director. I guess the problem is that the story is so inevitably tragic but not in a particularly satisfying way. I enjoyed watching the trailer for the movie equally as much as watching the movie itself.
Unless set in America, Americans cast in period dramas just doesn't seem right. Good set but the heavily American cast ruined it for me straight away.
It could be something really better, I think. Mia tries but honestly, she lacks energy and strong to give her character a good performance. Most f che cast is not really bad, Ezra Miller, who at first I thought would't convince me with his "delighted face" haha, won me over with his sweet and naive Leon and Bovary's husband is really good too, but honestly this movie is forgettable.
Well, it's OK. We got bored halfway through and never finished watching it. It's another adaptation of the story, atmospherically shot and acted. But it lacks something.
Dour production. Drains the life out of the book. Having recently read the book,I was really disappointed with this. Only managed 30 or so minutes before realising it couldn't improve. I have been a Wasikovska fan since I watched Tracks, but maybe she wasn't suited to this role. More likely it is the direction. I hope this adaptation doesn't stop people from reading one of the greatest books ever written.
Having not read the novel, I had little expectations as to what Madame Bovary had to offer. Unfortunately, it was nothing more than a disappointing period drama.
Madame Bovary is the classic lovey story, written by the one of the great writer Gustave Flaubert. Story shows that how Emma Bovary ( the heroine), her passion bring her to her tragedy. To read the complete story and analysis visit goo.gl/qdqFyn.
A poor adaptation of Gustave Flaubert's classic novel, Madame Bovary is monotonous and cliché. The story follows a young woman who marries a country doctor, but finding her new life unfulfilling, she starts to spend recklessly and seeks out new lovers. Mia Wasikowska gives a strong performance but the character is underdeveloped. The film never really delves into the why behind her infidelity and excessive spending, which makes her come off as a rather shallow character. And the dialog is quite dry, with no passion to it. However, the film looks beautiful; with elaborate costumes and set designs. Also, the score does a good job at setting the mood and tone. Yet despite its first class production values, Madame Bovary has no heart.
