Memoir of a Snail Reviews
A truly beautiful film.
Go to cinema to only saw this movie, and I get a big surprise, this movie is amazing, is emotional, and has a great message for the spectators, MUST SEE IT
I thoroughly enjoyed this film, but it's definitely not on the level of masterpiece. It did a great job of tackling very thorny issues such as alcoholism, death and illness, the perils of the foster care system (which apparently is in shambles whatever the country is). The animation was top-notch and the voice actors really sold the story. There was a bit too much voice-over though. Not sure if this was a choice to propel the story forward in an autobiographical way or because the director didn't trust the audience to understand the subtext and nuance of the story. But either way, it was excessive. There was also a bit too many shock factors that for me, detracted from the central themes. However, the movie moved right along. I thought the pacing was a strong positive for the film. I think my favorite part however was the bashing of jesus and the hypocrisy of christianity and how toxic and destructive it is. I'm glad the movie made this one of the most important elements of the narrative. Loved it when that damn church burned to the ground. All-in-all, a VERY adult animated film which is a rarity. Worth the watch.
Disgusting and depressing movie. Not sure what was the idea of making it. Lots of greasy jokes below the waist, attacks on the church, sexual perversies, etc. Not recommended.
Gran película que te llega al corazón, una animación ideal y muy buena
Ah extraordinary journey through a life that seems complicated, yet its story, filled with love, does not follow a single rhythm. Like life itself, it flows with ups and downs, making every moment a unique and thrilling experience. Magnificent!
Even at the most darkest moments, we must learn to grow, let go of the past, and become our better selves in the future. Great animation and storytelling.
Nominee for Best Animated Feature at the 97th Academy Awards, Adam Elliot's stop-motion animation, loosely autobiographical, chronicles the incredible tribulations a lonesome snail enthusiast has to grapple from birth to young adulthood and learns from the slugs she hoards that "life can only be understood backwards but it must be lived forwards".
As a long-time fan of stop-frame animation AND Australian film quirkiness, I found this a gorgeous immersion in a rather melancholic world. The story is so unremittingly grim for such a large percentage of the film, that the comic relief, mostly in the form of Pinkie, lends itself to huge guffaw moments. Touching and very well portrayed, it’s not one for those who are looking for action or joy. I found a woman full-on sobbing in the loos at the end of the film! ( she was fine, I checked), which might give you an insight into the timbre of the tale and it’s telling
The ending is shocking. Not a movie for kids due to the language and religion stuff.
A very sweet and profound story of hardship and resilience. The animation style is perfectly relevant, focused and engaging. This is celebrating the power of love and friendship through movie making magic.
I did not get to see this when it first came out. Given it’s an animation and a kind of strangely done stop motion one it did not make my list then. What a mistake. So glad I saw it on its “one night only reshowing” due to the Oscar nomination. This was an AMAZING movie! Full of heart, meaning, and impact. That “weird” animation I was not sure about I grew to love while watching this one. Learning about Grace’s life and see all she overcame and the growth was awesome. Even though it is animation with the things that happen and the scenes portrayed, this is an adult movie for sure. Nothing but great things to say here. Loved it
I found this both funny and very moving. The stop-motion animation is incredible. For me, this was the best animated film of the year.
Why r rated it should be pg 13
The craftsmanship in the animation cannot be faulted, but the script is shockingly dull and depressing. The story recounts a series of genuinely awful events in the main character's life, very slowly, with a rushed happy ending that comes too late to relieve the dead feeling that's seeping into your soul. The retrospective narration emphasises the emptiness of the script by making the events of the film feel distant, repetitive and never ending. You'll spend your time praying for some dark comedy to bring you back to life, but the dusting of immature one liners (boobs! swingers! an old lady that likes weed!) leaves you cringing.
"Memoir of a Snail," directed by Adam Elliot, is a 2024 Australian stop-motion animated film that delves into the life of Grace Pudel, a melancholic misfit with an affinity for collecting ornamental snails and an intense love for books. Voiced by Sarah Snook, Grace's journey from childhood to adulthood is marked by a series of misfortunes, leading her to find confidence within herself amid the clutter of everyday life. The film also features the voices of Kodi Smit-McPhee, Eric Bana, Magda Szubanski, Dominique Pinon, and Jacki Weaver. Elliot's direction shines in this film, showcasing his signature blend of dark humor and poignant storytelling. The narrative structure, while episodic, effectively captures the essence of Grace's life, presenting her struggles and triumphs in a manner that is both relatable and deeply moving. The screenplay is rich with wit and emotion, allowing the characters to resonate with the audience on a profound level. However, some viewers might find the pacing uneven at times, with certain segments lingering longer than necessary. The stop-motion animation is nothing short of mesmerizing. Each frame is meticulously crafted, bringing a tactile quality to the visuals that enhances the storytelling. The character designs are uniquely stylized, reflecting the imperfections and quirks of real-life individuals. The cinematography complements the animation beautifully, using lighting and composition to evoke a range of emotions throughout the film. Elena Kats-Chernin's musical score adds depth to the narrative, blending seamlessly with the visuals to heighten the emotional impact of key scenes. The music serves as an additional layer of storytelling, guiding the audience through Grace's emotional landscape without overshadowing the visual elements. Editing by Bill Murphy ensures a cohesive flow to the film, skillfully balancing the whimsical and somber moments. The transitions between scenes are smooth, maintaining the film's rhythm and preventing the episodic narrative from feeling disjointed. At its core, "Memoir of a Snail" explores themes of loneliness, resilience, and the human tendency to build protective shells around ourselves. Grace's journey is a testament to the strength found in vulnerability and the beauty of embracing one's true self. The film's portrayal of hoarding as a coping mechanism is handled with sensitivity, shedding light on the complexities of mental health without resorting to judgment or caricature. Comparisons can be drawn to Elliot's previous work, such as "Mary and Max," which also delved into themes of isolation and unlikely friendships. However, "Memoir of a Snail" stands on its own, offering a fresh perspective and a more refined narrative approach. The film's tone and aesthetic may also remind viewers of the works of Marc Caro and Jean-Pierre Jeunet, particularly in its whimsical yet poignant examination of human nature. In conclusion, "Memoir of a Snail" is a remarkable achievement in animated storytelling, blending heartfelt performances, meticulous craftsmanship, and profound thematic exploration. While the pacing may falter slightly in places, the film's overall impact is undeniable, leaving a lasting impression on both casual viewers and film enthusiasts alike. With its unique visual style and compelling narrative, "Memoir of a Snail" earns a well-deserved four out of five stars.
Toda la película está equilibrada, sencilla y rápida para la gente que no le gusta mucho el desarrollo de una historia "simple".
