Midnight Run Reviews
Truly a timeless classic
It doesn't need to be as long as it is, but this is still a very enjoyable movie. The cast is excellent.
This picture is too often forgotten - an absolutely hilarious ride across the continent! The cast is just about perfect: Robert DeNiro, Charles Grodin, Yaphet Kotto, even Dennis Farina! I got two words for you: see this picture.
I liked the fact that this buddy comedy was made, late 80s. Rob's character was making fun of a Yaphett's character the chief's FBI agent by stealing his sunglasses, and by making silly inuendos or inside jokes. All in all, Rob was trying to make it back for the bounty of the "Duke." I liked Farina's part in this movie. A lot of people were hot on their trail.
Follows the typical 80’s format, it’s fast paced and there’s some fun twists and turns, it’s good to see De Niro don a different persona compared to the usual. I enjoyed the movie for what it was
Sadly kind of boring honestly. Characters are often annoying and not compelling to root for. I'd would pass on this one.
watched on flight from Japan. Fun movie
The movie is so bad it’s like a really bad episode of the A Team.
Every time I stumble across it on tv, like I have done tonight, I have to watch it until the end. Spot on cast make a sharp script fly by in a joyous blur of unadulterated 80’s entertainment!
Watched Midnight Run at a theater when it came and loved it then and watched it recently and liked it just as much. Good caper with lots of twists and turns. If language bothers you - you probably won’t like it.
Grodin & Deniro dynamic is cinematic gold.
Went to theater while in college with 3 other friends, an hour in we all 4 left. Couldn’t stand it. Tried again about 15 yrs later same result.
Probably one of the most watchable movies ever made. The spark-striking chemistry between the two leads is pure gold, the supporting characters almost run away with the plot, and the personal pathos in the middle is as sharp as it is unexpected. This is De Niro at his finest. Grodin and Kotto don't do too badly either.
one of De Niro best performances
I know many people will disagree with me, but this is my favorite DeNiro movie. His other movies are great but this one has stuck with me since I was a kid. I think this movie was the first time I saw DeNiro in a movie. I love the "buddy-type cop" theme. Plenty of action for that time and plenty of laughs. At first, I wanted to see this movie, I remember, cause I saw John Aston in the trailer and I loved him in Beverly Hills Cop 1 and 2. The ride trip across the country was funny and had plenty of action. If you like buddy cop-themed movies then this is one for you.
This is one buddy comedy that goes everywhere and anywhere! A former cop-turned bounty hunter is tasked to retrieve an accountant and bring him back to L.A., only to run afoul with the FBI, Gangsters and one very unhappy mercenary. Brought together by the back and forth between De Niro and Grodin, this action-comedy manages to make people laugh everytime!
With a few exceptions, the movie is more low key than you'd expect with both De Niro and Grodin staying completely true to their Odd Couple-esque pairing.
One of the greatest movies ever made. Very smart and touching! The dialogues and the plot are great!
I watched this again on DVD recently. It's around 35 years old, and it plays as well now as it did when it was first released in 1988. It's a fantastic action comedy, of exceptional quality. It's over 2 hours long, and every minute is packed with amazing stunts and fantastic dialog delivered by an expert cast. It's as if the producers had found a magic money tree, and decided to use it to make the best movie ever. I really can't praise this movie enough. I just wish all movies were made to such a high standard. Thoroughly recommended, without reservation.
From the director of Beverly Hills Cop, I just thought I had an interest of seeing this movie myself and what makes this movie so good is the humour that really keeps you going. Now since that I've been a fan of Robert De Niro I thought of watching some of the film starring him after this so with the exception of reviewing this movie I was literally going to review Beverly Hills Cop and the sequels before this but that never came to pass so let's just get on with it. Bounty hunter, Jack Walsh played by Robert De Niro, is enlisted by bail bondsman Eddie Moscone played by Joe Pantoliano, to bring the accountant named Jonathan Mardukas aka. "The Duke" played by Charles Grodin, back to Los Angeles. It turns out he had embezzled $15 million from Chicago mob boss Jimmy Serrano played by Dennis Farina, before skipping on the $450,000 bail Moscone had posted for him. Jack must bring Mardukas back within 5 days tops. Moscone says it's an easy job and a midnight run but Walsh demands $100,000. He's then approach by Special Agent Alonzo Mosely played by Yaphet Kotto, who needs Mardukas to be a witness against Serrano. Jack finally captures Jonathan and takes him to an airplane. It turns out he's afraid to fly so they both now have to travel by train. Bounty hunter Marvin Dorfler played by John Ashton, catches up to them to get the Duke, he's been arrested, they travel by bus, they were ambushed by the feds and escaped while Serrano's men start shooting. Robert De Niro as Jack Walsh is a very cynical person who doesn't give a s**t and wants the $100,000 to get the Duke to the bail bonds so he can get out of this job without the cops and Serrano's men chasing after him with the Duke, especially when he has to deal with Jonathan's advises telling him what's not good for him and what he shouldn't be doing. Jesus, it's like I have to put up with something like this like I have to tell somebody to get out of my p***ing room after this. "When's the last time you had a chest X-ray? You know about secondary smoke? You could give people lung cancer who are innocent and tryin' to live healthy lives." "Why don't you just go back to sleep? Leave me alone. Do whatever you have to do." "Why don't you put the cigarette out." "Why don't you shut up and leave me alone?" "Put the cigarette out, Jack." "What a..." "Put the cigarette out." "What a pain in the ass this guy is." Definitely. "Thank you. I thought you were putting it out." "No I'm not putting it out." "Why aren't you popular with the Chicago Police Department?" The end climax is something that'll get you heart pumped and make you think what's going to happen when you least expected. I gotta say that this is a lot of fun much like the ones I've seen back in the day. Pop it in and see for yourself.
