This is a film dealing with a dark theme, the Japanese yakuza. In Hollywood this would be an action-packed thriller, but under Juzo Itami it became a well-paced comedy. Tension is always released periodically through clever conversations or actor' particular actions. The stark contrast of tension-building and comical release several times throughout the movie is most enjoyable. Overall, Minbo no Onna takes a close look at the Japanese yakuza scene without making it too heavy to watch.

Dass man es bei Minbo mit einem Film von Jūzō Itami zu tun hat, merkt man schon nach wenigen Sekunden. Sein Stil ist unverkennbar und es macht einfach Spaß sich seine hektischen aber zugleich auch sehr coolen Filme anzusehen. Seine Frau und Muse Nobuko Miyamoto sehe ich ebenfalls immer wieder gerne, sie hat einfach eine tolle Ausstrahlung und es ist ein Genuss sie spielen zu sehen.
Minbo ist einerseits lustig und unterhaltsam und andererseits gibt es auch viele ernste und bedrückende Momente. Der Film hat Jūzō Itami auf alle Fälle sehr viel gekostet; Die Yakuza fand den Film alles andere als lustig und schon wenige Tage nach dem Kinostart wurde Itami von Mitgliedern der Yakuza angegriffen und niedergestochen. Den Angriff hat er überlebt, doch es gibt nicht wenige Stimmen die behaupten, dass auch der spätere Selbstmord Itamis von der Yakuza "eingeleitet" wurde. Irgendwie hatte ich deshalb den ganzen Film über ein ziemlich ungutes Gefühl in der Magengegend.

[b]Somehow this movie is listed as a comedy. Don't really see that (although it has a few moments). It's more of a suspense film about the J-mafia trying to extort money out of this fancy hotel in Japan. It's a fairly entertaining picture. [/b]
