Mother of the Bride Reviews
A shallow escapist pic that I couldn't escape from until it ended.

...weary identikit romcom will probably generate the requisite clicks...fairly harmless, fairly inoffensive, remarkably bland fare, for couch potatoes who can’t be bothered watching an actual film, and that seems to be partly what Netflix cater for…
| Original Score: 2/5 | Aug 13, 2024
This flimsy, forgettable rom-com is populated by superficially 'pretty people' - bland, underdeveloped stereotypes - and each shallow, awkward scene is more predictable than the one preceding it.
| Original Score: 3/10 | Jul 27, 2024
This movie is an embarrassingly silly and cringy watch with no soul or substance.

Brooke Shields powers this movie featuring a destination wedding in Phuket, with attendant floaty resort wear, skinny-dipping, old college friends and second chances

commendable for showing you’re never too old for love, but in highlighting the gorgeous locations, it forgets to spotlight the romance.

Trades in rom com cliches. The fleeting moments of originality quickly get stomped out in favor of the safe, predictable (read: boring) route. There was enough potential here to make the film work, but very little manages to come together.
| Original Score: 3/10 | May 24, 2024
The story arcs are obvious and tick just about every box necessary for a rom-com. And while character development is thin, there is still a feel-good aura surrounding the storytelling, crafting a light and pleasing romance.
| Original Score: 3.5/5 | May 23, 2024
It's an hour-and-a-half that feels like a decade, so you're left desperately searching for something to end the misery.
| Original Score: 0/4 | May 21, 2024
There's nothing real about Mother of the Bride. The conflict's contrived, the set pieces drag, and the characters so paper-thin that it feels more like marketing for Phuket than a proper film.
| Original Score: 3/10 | May 18, 2024
This could be a nice setup for a rom-com full of family shenanigans but everything feels so played out and bland that it left me underwhelmed. The jokes aren’t funny and the chemistry isn’t there so it just doesn’t work.
| Original Score: 5/10 | May 15, 2024
Shields and Bratt's experience and photogenic power hardly help justify the hour-and-a-half this movie expects from the viewers. [Full review in Spanish]

The jokes are re-treads of re-treads of re-treads. Preston Sturges probably could have done something wonderful with this, but it just doesn't have any snap at all.

Mother of the Bride may be a fun Mother's Day watch, and there is something to be said for a cute mother-daughter light-hearted story, there are better options out there if viewers are looking for a funny or emotionally heartfelt mother-daughter movie.

Even with the tropical shooting location - a White Lotus-esque resort in Thailand - Mother of the Bride is, at best, predictable and artificial, and at worst, painful and utterly superfluous.

Netflix’s newest rom-com is middling and mindless.

[Brooke Shields] returns to dive into the water as in The Blue Lagoon. The issue is, that she doesn't come afloat. [Full review in Spanish]

Don’t get me wrong; Mother of the Bride is not a particularly bad movie. Really, the shortcomings of its emotional storytelling feel pretty in keeping with the modern rom-com... If anything, it’s all just sort of forgettable.

Anything grounded or human that real people could relate to regarding relationships or marriage is thrown out the window for cringe slapstick gags and shallow, filthy rich characters
| Original Score: 1.5/5 | May 11, 2024
Mother of the Bride lacks the charm and stamina to be an effective crowd-pleaser. Vapid and tiresome, this Netflix streamer is strictly for diehard fans of the genre.
