HR G Dame Margaret Rutherford is THE antithesis of Marple in the books but for some reason this works and is amazing. I love this series of movies. This is a classic British movie and is thoroughly charming for this. The term tongue in cheek is perfectly apt when describing a Margaret Rutherford film. This film was never intended to be a bum clenching murder mystery. It does though bring some wonderfully delivered lines from Charles 'Bud' Tingwell. If you want to enjoy a cosy Sunday afternoon, wrapped up warm against the rain and wind. Then this really is a 5 star film. Good character actors like Lionel Jeffries are reduced to wild over-acting to shore up the tedious plot and flat direction. Margaret Rutherford sails through it, imperious and jowly as ever. Good set up, interesting setting, intriguing plot development, thrilling finale. Murderer is a bit obvious from a point but the revelation comes fairly late in the movie, so doesn't spoil it much. Very funny at times too, though, unlike Murder Most Foul, here the humour is overdone and often feels out of place. The portrayal of the ship's captain as dithering, babbling idiot was uncalled for, and introduced far too much slapstick into what should have been a reasonably serious movie. Margaret Rutherford is great, as always, in her role as Miss Marple. Good support from the usual crew of Stringer Davis, as Mr Stringer, and Charles Tingwell, as Chief Inspector Craddock. Rated 3.5/5 Stars •  Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review Audience Member Margaret Rutherford is the whole show, starring as Agatha Christie's Miss Marple in what appears to be the 4th in a series of British films of the early 60's. This is not the BBC's Miss Marple - Rutherford puts some muscle into the part and her own eccentric charm. The plot involves a naval program for juvenile delinquents for which Marple becomes a trustee. Fishy business and murder means she gets a chance to investigate - with and without the police, who seem to know her well. Jaunty outing (perhaps because of the score) and fun in a time-killing way.
