Mutual Appreciation Reviews

Apr 19, 2014

I love mumblecore but couldn't get into Andrew Bujalski's sophomore film. Will watch it again eventually to see if I missed anything.

Not as fresh as "Funny Ha Ha", and a bit too long, but still masterfully executed and profound piece of reality.

Argh! I thought I rated this here, but I guess I forgot. It's been awhile so I don't know that I can say anything specific about it except that I liked it a lot. The characters were likeable, even with their flaws, and the mumblecore "formula" really works here in a more traditional narrative sense. Bujualski is smoother than in Funny Ha Ha and his storytelling is more refined.

With his first three films, Bujalski has shown a mastery of film form and the ability to reveal the humanity of mostly aimless young adults in the current generation. Bujalski trusts the writing (which is anything but heavy on exposition), as well as the camera and the movements of those on camera to draw out the unique personalities of these characters. MA's lack of a classical narrative arc doesn't keep it from being a revealing and incisive portrait on a most misunderstood group of people.

A lo-fi slacker dramedy that is entertaining, but doesn't have much to say.

one of the things that makes "mutual appreciation" such a gem of modern indie cinema is the way the characters interact with each other. it feels so believable, almost like these aren't actors, but rather a documentary. there are many subtle jokes that characters will make that go unnoticed to the other characters, making it feel all the more realistic. after watching this, i have become very interested in seeing moire of director andrew bujalski's work.

Alan is a struggling artist living in Brooklyn who is trying to get somewhere with his band, the Bumblebees. The film chronicles his life from his relationships to his attempt at getting a record deal, etc. Its one of those indie films where a bunch of characters are rather narcissitic and they sit around and talk a lot. I liked Bujalski's first feature 'FUNNY HA HA' quite a bit but this film felt borderline masturbatory in its endless sophisticated dialogue and characters who seem to be going nowhere. There is some merit in the dissection of a character like Alan whose own awkwardness and social anxieties hold him back from having a better life. It is a good honest script with quite a few scenes that have some funny interesting dialogue with a sharp realism but I never was emotionally connected to any of these characters leaving me void of any real emotional response to the film.

I didn't appreciate it. The youths and their issues of discussion are way too ordinary despite the unordinary style of filming.

Me aburri.

i thought it was a private movie. the actors n actresses don't look professional. i was bored n no fun.

i'm definitely getting quite the man crush on bujalski's work. This is the third film i've seen by him and once again thoroughly enjoyed it.

This is quite possibly the worst movie I've ever seen. I feel like I made better movies than this when I was in 7th grade.

Andrew Bujalski kicks the sophomore slump "curse" to the curb and delivers a successful follow-up to "mumblecore"'s break through "masterpiece"- "Funny Ha-Ha". The movie itself is more focused and even more anxious and curious about the new wave of mid to late twenties identity crises. A great script follows Bujalski's romantic throw back to the the '60's French New Wave cinema direction. An small little indie gem,

one of the best mumblecore films that I have seen. middle of the road hipsters unite.

I loved this little movie more than I expected. I always enjoy trying to figure out the connections between a group of artists who know each other, feed off each other, or collaborate. This was an exercise of my nerdy habit of doing that. Two hours of Internet research and reading followed watching this movie. Um, yay!

a film that feels like you are quite literally sitting with a group of 20-somethings for 2 hours. mumblecore has always seemed like its whole intent ALMOST gets it right, but suffers from a lack of specificity of ideas. this film has some funny moments and some interesting characters, but its far from a revelation.

This is the kind of movie Nicolas Cage as Charlie Kaufman wanted to write in Adaptation: a film where "nothing happens". Except here, instead of literally nothing happening, we get a glimpse into the world of those too shy, quiet, inexperienced, lazy or lonely to do anything for themselves when they need to. These characters' inaction is their action.

a perfectly enjoyable movie about people getting by, barely, due to miscommunication and missed opportunities.

For those of us who have had a mattress on the floor, or the friend who is a struggling musician skirting bills, this film is like watching yourself on the screen. Natural and nuanced, I really like the slice of like approach and the way the characters charm their way into your head and heart. This film brought me back a lot. I can understand how some might hate this, and some might not understand, but for those who this film was made to touch, I think it will connect very, very well.

today i saw an adorable little indie flick called "mutual appreciation".thoroughly enjoyable film with an incredibly natural flow to it and a script that reads like it's unscripted. the film depicts perfectly the lives of young new yorkers struggling to make it-- in fact I could picture several of the characters as people right around me. justin rice gives a wonderful performance and plays some great bishop allen songs. i was actually fortunate enough to meet him a few months ago and this made me even more thrilled to watch him in this film. of course, it isn't perfect, and perhaps will not be appreciated by people unfamiliar with the new york lifestyle, but i loved it all the same.
