National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation Reviews
A goofy satire of the middle-class WASP suburban holiday scene.

It really delivers on the laughs. One of the best holiday comedies ever made

From the wacky mishaps to oddly endearing characters, Christmas Vacation remains an uproarious, feel-good, oft-quoted holiday classic. Over 35 years, the film has become an annual must-watch for a fun, old-fashioned family Christmas.

I was prepared to enjoy this and it ended up feeling like a dreadful task I had to complete. This wasn't a good movie and definitely doesn't stand the test of time.

The pacing was rough, Clark Griswold is not a fun protagonist to follow and the comedy was all over the place tonally. Randy Quaid is the best thing in this, which is bonkers to say.

...an affable yet thoroughly erratic comedy...

…Christmas Vacation is the Fanny and Alexander of the John Hughes canon, a sincere, wry look back at Christmases past, and a showcase for the great comic talents of Chevy Chase…

It didn't seem like much of a big deal at the time -- in most respects, it still doesn't -- but the passing of years has revealed National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation to be the best in the series.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Nov 19, 2022
National Lampoon’s Vacation series of films have entertained audiences for years and, while the first one is considered the best, Christmas Vacation has become a close second.

National Lampoon's Xmas Vacation is a holiday classic and provides a lot of laughs.

“Christmas Vacation” has so many scenes and just as many lines that you just can’t forget. Director Jeremiah Chechik has a blast taking so many of the familiar family and Christmas traditions and accentuating them in a way that only the Griswolds could.

I will laugh out loud every time I watch this...my favorite from the Vacation franchise...

Chevy Chase has some good moments, and those who enjoy his double-talk and pratfalls will find some redeeming value in this lukewarm movie.

If it doesn't make you at least giggle, then you clearly don't understand the true meaning of the festive season.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Aug 12, 2020
It's silly in the extreme, and the only relief comes from Randy Quaid's performance as an obnoxious relative.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Aug 12, 2020
Sure, it's crude, episodic and half the jokes don't work, but 'Christmas Vacation' may be the only modern Christmas comedy which really stands up to repeat viewings.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Aug 12, 2020
Its nostalgic look at the season's chaotic brand of heightened emotions and frustrations is universal for anyone who's used to entertaining the extended family under one festive roof.
| Original Score: 8/10 | Aug 12, 2020
Chase's befuddled Dad remains a genuinely amusing creation, and the sight gags are impeccably timed.
| Aug 12, 2020
Every comic turn is predictable-from the electrocuted cat to the Scrooge-ified ending.

This film by John Hughes marks the third in the National Lampoon vacation-in-hell series, and is just about as inane as expected. Happily, this film is a lot funnier than expected, too.
