The Next Best Thing Reviews
No one is doing their best work.
Finally saw this last night and yes, it is as bad as its reputation. It was simply painful watching Madonna trying to act as a normal person, with that awful script, and few of the characters being remotely believable. I was working for John Schlesinger just prior to him making this last film and at the time, he said it was more difficult making a Hollywood film with a gay subject matter today, than when he made Sunday Bloody Sunday in the seventies.
The next best thing would have been to watch a different film than this one. This movie is just that awful. Sadly. The only person who was even good in this movie was Lynn Redgrave and she was only in like two scenes. Everyone else's acting in this movie is just atrocious. Even Neil Patrick Harris was bad in this movie and I didn't even know that was possible. What in the hell happened?! Oh yeah, Madonna happened. Oh brother.
I love this movie and I loved Madonnas performance as Abby. The sad thing is that Madonnas movies never get a chance because as soon as people see her name they IMMEDIATELY form a negative opinion. I guess that’s what happens when you’re the most successful female in history. When you’re a threat people feel the need to attack.
An extremely fun and bittersweet story of friendship, love, desperation, parenthood, and ultimately making the right decision. This is another example of a great movie being squashed by "critics" and their shares love of hating Madonna. Do yourself a favor and watch The Next Best Thing. You'll be glad you did
***Due to the recent RT changes that have basically ruined my past reviews, I am mostly only giving a rating rather than a full review.***
It's got some flaws- but I go to it when I'm in a certain mood... Some of the lighting was poor- but still a decent movie
Not the best movie ever made, but I enjoyed it.
With John Schlesinger in the director's chair, one is immediately expecting a film of a certain level of quality. Why on earth did he accepts to direct this film is a bit of a mystery but even more mysterious is how did he manages to achieve such a poor result? It's not completely terrible because the storyline is solid and would have gain to be treated in a much better way but here and there are some elements that contribute to the debate surrounding such a topic. One of the main problem in this film is the actor's direction. Madonna is not a good actress and never manages to be convincing . Her expressions are so wooden and sterns , she fails to convey any real depth to her character. Everett, although a usually very talented actor is in free mode and plays it as camp as can be, relying on all the clichés possible. Soon enough these two will do you head in and their alchemy on screen fades quickly. So unfortunately the film fails to live up to it's huge potential and turn out to be a lazy mess barely reaching 온라인카지노추천 movie quality. It's a film that never really finds it's tone, starting like a comedy and finishing like a court case drama, it feels like such a story should have been told in more serious way with less clichés and more substance. A disappointing film.
If this had been a movie about the relationship between Everett and Bratt it would have been great, They have chemistry. Madonna tries very hard but she's so awkward on screen it's hard to watch. I'm a little bit embarrassed I made it to the end. Blame Canada.
I agree that Madonna has been better, but Rupert Everett, Neil Patrick Harris, Benjamin Bratt, and everyone else were so good in this, and the story is a very interesting one to consider. I recommend it.
Indeed, the film needed better acting, but the moment you see Everett talk in front of the jury you are ready to forgive many of the flaws.
Movies featuring Madonna are never good, NEVER! No chemistry, bad acting and awkward plot. In conclusion, totally lame movie. I tried, i really tried... but seriously, you can't expect anyone to watch this crap. I wasted 30 minutes of my life.
I love this film, mainly because the theme tune for it is american pie n tht song is very sentimental to me
Possibly one of the worst movies ever made. Madonna's acting is slightly decnet (for once) but the plot is dodgy, stupid,a nd boring as hell. While the previews show a slightly dramatic comedy, the movie centers around backstabbing and distrust, and Madonna's range in acting playing a woman who does Yoga, has a child out of wedlock and is firends with rupert Everett- hey - wait a minute
