No Such Thing Reviews
Underrated. While it is a familiar type of story in more ways than one, not at all surprised if it's based on some old fable or fairy tale, it was well done and was able to keep my focus and interest.
Not a horror movie. More like an Icelandic-American afterschool special. The monster has been around since the beginning of time. He has lived in Iceland for ages yet he has a New York accent. I made it near to the end but could not finish. My review is don't waste your time.
This was the best movie I've ever seen, maybe the best movie ever made...until they make 'The Long Walk' ...a short story by Stephen King.
Love this movie. District 9 type feel; with the monster (or alien, in District 9) seeming to represent humankind's self-created Satan.
La vi hoy por cable se veia prometedora por la historia luego se puso aburridisima, que hacen Julie Christie y Helen Mirren? y una inexpresiva Sarah Polley le va mejor como directora.
An interesting film that to me had a lot to say (and none of it admiring) about the modern media and our superficial modern society, along with the corrupting influence of civilization and fame.
This was a wonderful sendup of the modern news-as-entertainment culture done in Hartley's signature style. While this was not his best film, at the end, I could relate to both Beatrice and the Monster. Helen Mirren was brilliant as always, and her over-the-top antics were just right for her role as The Boss.
Robert Burke is brilliant as the monster as is his makeup; Sarah Polley plays against him very nicely; director/composer Hal Hartley's score is a masterpiece; the rest of the film however is a frustrating mess of worthless subplots and underused castmates all rolled up into a lackluster film with a (anti)climax that most will feel cheated by.
An amusingly off kilter tale of a monster and the reporter who goes after it's story. A wonderfully oblique tale with turns you can't predict and a probably like nothing you've watched before. Mainstream audiences will be bored with the minimal effects and character driven story but for those of us that enjoy counterculture works they will see an entertaining if light film from an inventive creator.
I wanted to like No Such Thing and kept hoping it would get better. That's why I watched the entire movie. About halfway through I considered quitting but I was curious about Beatrice and The Monster - would they fall in love?, would he eat her?, what about the terrorists mentioned at the beginning of the movie in a throw away line? The movie ended and I was left with a head full of possibilities and no resolution. I feel cheated. And a bit lost and sad that the story I hoped for never came to life. This should have been an early draft - not a finished script.
I had seen this shortly after it was originally released on DVD and it was completely lost on me: I'm not sure if I was expecting something super-serious or if I was meant to suspend my disbelief. On watching it a second time, however, I realise a) it was tagged a comedy on TiVo and b) that this HAS to be taken with suspension of disbelief. There is most certainly a comedic overtone here, despite some pretty serious social commentary on media manipulation (you can't go wrong with Helen Mirren, period), paranoid fear of the unknown (plane crashes, terrorism, "monsters"), and gender roles/ feminism in fairy tales. It can be a little slow if you like your movies to blow up in your face or to have sex in your lap; otherwise, it's a pretty fun ride.
Another misfire by Hal Hartley... I love his work up to and including Henry Fool, but unfortunately everything that followed is barely watchable and just plain not funny.
An odd and meandering slog of a movie, with only the lovely Sarah Polley and a quirky satirical script making the flick an interesting exercise and worth a viewing. The monster makeup ain't half bad either.
