The Notebook Reviews

Apr 24, 2025

Okay, I absolutely love this movie. Haven't read the book BUT I will say that Allie had a complicated relationship with her mother, otherwise she wouldn't have hid Noah's letters from her. I get that she wanted the absolute best for her daughter but that was not okay what she did. Nor was it okay for Allie to cheat on her fiance with her first love. That, I can't say I'm too proud of. I respect the crap out of her fiance for how he saw the situation. Like hats off to how handled it maturely. He couldn't yelled at Allie and threatened to kill Noah. He did say it wasn't an option but the fact that he chose not to just because he just wanted to be with Allie, like that's incredibly noble of him. So I respect that choice. I do support that Allie did eventually make up her mind and choose who she would be with. Like the heart wants what it wants in the end. Chicken flick? Very well could be. Sad? Absolutely. Adventure, love and romance? Of course. But that doesn't make it a chicken flick. I think sometimes people mistake "chicken flicks" for girl movies that aren't that great but they watch them anyway. Typically a "chicken flick" is a rom-com. But some men like those too. They're just too macho to say so. That is all.

One of my favourite love stories. Definitely a classic.

A romantic drama based on the 1996 novel of the same name by Nicholas Sparks, that follows a young couple who fall in love in the 1940s whose romance is threatened by the difference in their respective social classes. Their story is read from a notebook in the present day by an elderly man to a fellow nursing home woman with dementia. Despite taking me ages to finally watch—after hearing so much about it from pop culture—its emotional power remains undeniable. While some moments feel dated, the film’s sweeping romance and achingly beautiful ending still leave you breathless. Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams deliver magnetic performances—remarkable, considering they were just rising stars at the time. Bathed in golden-hued cinematography, the film’s simplicity is its strength, leaning into raw sentimentality rather than complexity. (The iconic geese scene alone is pure cinematic magic.)

The movie is incredibly fun, romantic, and bittersweet. I thoroughly enjoyed watching the stereotypical happy American couple from the 1940s. Life seemed so much simpler back then—people appeared to have a great deal of freedom and were unburdened by the complexities of modern life. It reminds me of *The Great Gatsby* in some ways, but this is a purely romantic tale with a happy ending.

The notebook never fails to make me ball my eyes out, the love between them is just beautiful and real, i think the fact he remembered what kind of house she wanted set the standard really high for every man.

I love how The Notebook tells a slow-paced, deeply passionate love story. Noah and Allie’s relationship develops naturally, piece by piece, making every moment feel meaningful. Their connection isn’t just about grand gestures but the quiet, intimate moments that define true love. This movie beautifully captures the feeling of falling in love—slowly, intensely, and completely.

Nicholas Sparks is one of the best authors and creates captivating films such as “The Notebook” directed by Nick Cassavetes. This film leaves the audience with an emotional mark with a modern romantic story. The two main characters, Noah (Ryan Gosling) and Allie (Rachel McAdams) have many challenges to overcome throughout the movie. The young love story is recited by older Noah while older Allie is struggling with dementia. It takes place in 1940’s and switches between then and present day. The most known line in the film is “If you’re a bird, I’m a bird” this moment speaks deaths into the amount of passion and connection the two characters have. The main aspects of cinematography are the landscapes and picturesque settings, warm colors throughout the film, iconic rain scenes, and charming old town nostalgia. The landscape throughout the film is scenic with lots of outdoor and rustic locations, this provides the old town nostalgic feeling to the audience. The overall pallet of the film is warm colors, it was done this way by having the actors in brighter colors, golden sunsets, and lake images. The most dramatic part of the film had the added effect of rain and lightning, this created a deep and powerful connection that could not be provided without the rain and lightning. Throughout the film there was a reoccurring piano melody to enhance certain scenes along with the characters memories and relationship. The overall music that played were jazz and classical, this was extremely appreciate for the film and when it was filmed. The soundtrack influenced the audiences’ feelings towards the film. The editing was steady paced, had easy transitions between past and present, had montages to enhance transitions, along with smooth build-ups for emotional effect. There was use of dissolve and fade-outs which assisted with the transitions between scenes along with past and present switches. Slow-motion effects were used during more dramatic and emotional scenes to heighten the impact. My personal review of the film would be a four out of five, the main reason is the emotional depth within the film. The soundtrack throughout was thoughtful by putting certain songs at times while repeating them in emotional scenes. The transitions between past and present allowed for a slight mystery to occur because the was no clear telling who the older people were until the end of the movie. I have never watched a film that had such a deep emotional impact. The directions and storytelling were well thought-out which allowed for the film to be such a success.

The disparity between the critic review and the audience review tells you all you need to know about critics. They have absolutely no idea what they’re watching. This movie is incredible. The first time I watched it, I wasn’t that moved. I was also a lot younger. But every time I’ve watched it since, it has meant more and more to me. It is one of those rare movies that shows you yourself. It’s okay if this movie doesn’t move you. But if you’re deeply in love, I promise it will.

Ok yes it's a little sentimental but I still at the end get a little something in my eye. Delightful charming story with top notch actors 👍👍

Although some of the acting ranges from patchy to bad, and the storytelling is a bit uneven in places, there’s no denying the emotional impact of this lovely film. The portrayal of persistent love and loyalty in the face of dementia is the film’s real strength and the final scenes are both devastatingly sad and powerfully uplifting at the same time.

This movie is yet another example of the disconnect between movie critics and real people. I think the purpose of movies (heck, all art for that matter) is to make you feel something. By that criteria, this film is in my top 10. Beautiful storyline and inspired performances by Garner, Rowland, Gosling, and McAdams. Whenever the movie critics dislike a film, that’s my cue to give it a shot.

The Notebook is an old-fashioned love story with the subject of Dementia thrown in to heighten the tear jerking experience. The movie opens with James Garner telling a story (from a notebook) to an elderly woman played by Gena Rowlands. She appears to have a memory problem. The story is about a summer romance, a tale of love between a society girl (Allison Hamilton) who meets a young mill worker (Noah Calhoun) at a carnival, June 6, 1940. They are both 17 years old. Allison's (Allie) parents don't approve of Noah, because of his social standing (meaning, he doesn't have one). Young Allie's heart is broken when her parents try their best to split them in two. After their summer romance is over, when Allie is sent off to college in New York and Noah has to enter the military and World War II in Europe, you would think that there would be no way for this uncommon romance to get back together. However, true love has no boundaries. The performances by James Garner (old Duke) and Rachel McAdams (young Allie) are outstanding. The screenplay is based off of the Nicholas Sparks heart-warming book. I'm not normally into romantic movies, put this movie was so well put together that I had to give it 4.5 stars. If you miss seeing the old-fashioned Hollywood love stories, then you must see this movie.

Absolutely superb film and the critics don’t know know nothing about a fantastic movie, get another job

Nice chemistry between the leading couple; maybe that's the reason this had so much success and popularity, but frankly (although not bad) it's a little corny and cheap drama-wise
