Octopussy Reviews
The first real dud of the bond franchise, Roger Moore and Louis Jourdan do a great job but they are stuck in a convoluted plot that has some ridiculous and silly moments
I’d say a slight step up here compared to the last outing. Mainly due to some good action. Still appears to be stuck in a rut with its humour and lack of plot however.
(ENGLISH) Octopussy delivers what you'd expect from a James Bond film: fast-paced action, stunning women, and clever gadgets. However, the passage of time is evident, especially with Roger Moore looking less comfortable in the more physical scenes, which takes away some of the film's freshness. The plot, blending international espionage and eccentric villains, is entertaining but lacks the spark and intrigue of earlier installments. Still, the film shines in its action sequences, particularly the spectacular aerial stunts in the pre-credit scene and a climax that keeps the tension high until the end. While the narrative can feel confusing at times and the humor seems somewhat forced, Octopussy fulfills its role as a light, enjoyable addition to the Bond saga. It's not the most memorable, but it remains a fun adventure for fans of the genre.
Without a doubt, the worst James Bond movie ever made, though it has plenty of competition, beginning with every picture starring Roger Moore. I can understand why viewers might prefer one film or another, but not how professional critics give these movies such favorable reviews or rank them as they do. Someone on Esquire posted an article recently listing all 25 of the Bond films, and actually thought it was the eighth best in the series, ahead of Dr. No, No Time to Die, and Spectre. I think giving it one star is being generous.
this is a really bad bond-movie … the whole berlin-circus segment is one of the worst scenes ever.
Great James Bond adventure, (in spite of the cheesy title)...It's definitely above average for the Roger Moore entries, and the 007 Franchise as a whole.
It’s James Bond ! So immediately it’s a good film I mean you got top quality action you got a guy flying a jet through a building being chased by a Missile then blowing it up and driving to a gas station! Immediately you know this is no low budget action film this is James Bond , Now times change in the 60’s it was all sex serious action but in the early 80’s we liked a bit of humour and action and Roger Moore camps it up brilliantly bringing his wit and comes across as the ultimate English gentleman , This film is not in the top 10 Bond films but there’s no shame in that since they are a hard act to follow but this is one of the better Bonds films but there’s only 1 real bad one anyway ie Die another Day ! But this is a good solid Bond film and after the last one which was more serious they decided to go all action ! I mean he runs through the jungle and gets attacked by a tiger a snake spiders and a crocodile all in 5 minutes! It’s a bit like Temple of Doom in that respect complete with bizarre native food , Now if ya gonna rate films out of 100% you gotta realise anything under 50% is rubbish! And this film is not rubbish in fact it gets a solid 77% every time because it’s a good Bond film , It’s not a great Bond film it’s not in the top 10 but it’s not in the bottom either , As action films go you must say wow I’ve never seen that before ! And that alone is worth points ! A plane flying through a building ! Guys running on the top of trains guys fighting on the top of planes ! A circus! A Russian villain it’s got a lot going for it , So if you don’t like it , It’s not because it’s a bad film it’s just you don’t like 1980’s James Bond but that is more about you than this film . I mean the people who write reviews on Rotten tomatoes weren’t probably around when Rambo 2 and Octopussy came out because if they were they would know these films were huge hits for a reason because this ain’t Shakespeare here it’s a action film and needs to be judged by the standards of all action films from the 1980’s and if you do that ya like hey that’s pretty good isn’t it !
I never thought I'd say this. But Octopussy IS HORRIBLE!!! I HATED THIS MOVIE
Tepid movie but the best Bond movie intro ever. Childish plot.
Although it has some decent action towards the end with some sprints of charms here and there, Octopussy is overall a tired, uninteresting and choppy Bond film that is substantially devoid of personality with poor character handling.
This is one of the most jokey films in the entire franchise but at the same time it relishes it in that sense. Even though Roger Moore was too old at this time and the finale could have been much better. Overall, an okay movie.
It started off well, but quickly descended into silly gags that kept killing the tension. I guess if I was 12 I'd think the idea of pulling a sword out of a sword swallowers throat and using it in the middle of an action scene was about as cool as it gets. But at my age I find it hard to swallow. Editing was a bit sloppy too. The sets and costumes were very impressive but got comical near the end (honestly, what was Xena doing there?) On the positive side, the movie had a lot of eye candy to compensate for it's shortfalls.
An enjoyable Bond movie with the typical formula.
It's an okay movie and at least it's still entertaining.
The late Roger Moore in his 6th outing and 10 years since his debut as British secret agent James Bond 007 Director John Glen of 'License to Kill' and 'Living Daylights' takes over offering an adventure involving Bond this time going up with some diamond smugglers to stop a crazed Russian general The movie opens with 009 being killed in action while holding a Faberge egg and Bond is sent to complete his mission The trail leads him to India encountering a mysterious woman named Octopussy in charge of a diamond smuggling ring disguised as a traveling circus Her actual motives are more sinister with Bond discovering a plot to blow up a U.S. Air Force base in West Germany by Kamal Khan Robert Brown also makes his appearance following the late Bernard Lee as M Khan is a classy villain being one of the saving graces here Roger Moore still carries his usual charm and swagger here Maud Adams as Octopussy is one of my favorite Bond girls next to Kristina Wayborn's Magda, not to mention the small island they inhabit is full of nothing but beautiful women Octopussy is one of the few women who manages to dismiss Bond's charming ways unaware how alike they are being cold and calculating but a businesswoman who learned how to smuggle diamonds at a young age making a sisterhood It balances modern sensibilities about gender equality There's even a connection to her father facing death rather than trial being branded a traitor Gobinda is also one of my favorite Bond henchmen Oddly enough this is one of the rare Bond movies which it's theme song is not the title but I'll be damned if it still isn't catchy by Rita Coolidge And the score by John Barry is pretty good The India setting is genius and gives it an exotic feel A lot of the campy humor is a bit much and the Germany portion feels like a different movie making the runtime go a bit longer But the politics are very 80's with the Russians, the action is fun to watch, and it's refreshing to have two Bond girls actually survive Bloated but an actual mystery is unfolded making this far from the worst of the franchise
The greatest 02 hours: and 10 minutes ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! In memory of Roger Moore!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A Complete Mess. The acting is not good. Moore is clearly too old for the part at this point and just kind of going through the motions for the most part. The villain isn't that good and everyone else is generic and forgettable. Orlo is decent but barely in ths aside frm the start explaining his motivations. The henchman is forgettable also. The cinematography is not good and despite a bunch of exotic locales and colorful characters it is super forgetful because of over the top ridiculous stunts, farfecthed scenes, unneeded slapstick, and just dumb stupid scenes nonstop. The perfect example is the train chase which has great stunts but is filled with dumb humor and stupid scenes in between. (The gorilla suit is one of the dumbest moments in the franchise). Also there is so many times it cuts to a stunt double also and its so noticeable. The music is forgettable and generic. The editing and pacing aren't that good. The worst part is this film has a stupid complex plot that doesn't make any sense. So the general is using a cirucs, Indian criminal, and mysterious Ocotopus lady to run a double cross jewel scheme to lead to WWIII. It makes no sense and is so unneededly over the top. The longer it goes on the more over the top it gets to make up for it. Add on more dumb ridiuclus stuff like the Safari Hunt, the tarzan yell, the circius people fight Kamal's men at the end with Q in a hot air balloon, the sawblade assassin, the stupid tuk tuk chase, and you see why its so nonstop stupid and is arguable the poster child for everything that hampered every entry post Goldfinger. Honestly I can't recommend this to anyone except completionists.
Many of the Bond-specific details are present, and they are generally recognised. Moore, though, is becoming older and lacks the virulence that this part calls for. As for the leading lady, Maude Adams, I find both her appearance and performance to be a little underwhelming. Although there were many identifiable Bond themes in this movie, it lacked the grandness and beautiful scenery that I've grown to anticipate from contemporary 007 movies. The narration is mostly reliable, although the plot itself is a little shaky. For fans of James Bond, it's a must-see; for everyone else, give it a look if you're really curious.
